Let’s Get Down to Business & Your Own Twist Link Up #60

This month’s Your Own Twist honors Business Women Day which recognizes and celebrates the contributions made by women in business. While the first Business Women Day wasn’t officially celebrated until 1982, the holiday’s roots go back to September 22, 1949, when Hilary A. Bufton Jr. and three Kansas City businesswomen founded the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Business Women Day is celebrated annually on September 22, the anniversary of the ABWA.

When I first decided on this theme, I had every intention of putting together a very business-y outfit. A blazer, some nice trousers, a fancy pair of heels. But then I didn’t feel like it.

I was unsure how to proceed when it occurred to me that my business is my family and my home and my blog as well as my crafting and my home decor projects and my upcycling ideas. So why not share an outfit that encompasses a little bit of that.

Remember this ugly dress that I transformed into a duster? And this one? I loved the end result of those two transformations, so I was really excited when I spotted the same ugly dress in a beautiful green ditsy floral print a few weeks later. I snagged it up for around $10 and tried one last time to make the ugly thing look good on me. It did not. It will not. So I worked a little magic with my scissors and my sewing machine and I have another fabulous duster. And that, my friends, is how this girl gets down to business!

About Your Own Twist

Your Own Twist is a monthly link party hosted by Monica of Monica Hayworth (formerly Jersey Girl, Texan Heart) and me on the third Thursday of every month with the goal of inspiring some of our friends to get creative with personal style.

The idea behind this collaboration is to take one common piece or theme and style it our own way with our own twist…Monica and I have both taken a lot of fashion inspiration from one another over the past few years even though we have totally different styles. It is always fun to see how we can interpret similar items in unique ways or what kind of twist we will each bring to the chosen theme.

I will let you know the themes well in advance in the event that you would like to use the theme for your own post and add it to the link party. However, any fashion posts are welcome regardless of whether you used the theme or not. Be sure to check out our upcoming style prompts below. You can read details about each theme here.

Monica has been on an indefinite blogging hiatus and I am struggling to keep up with things. Unfortunately, I think I am going to retire this series at the end of the year. I have all the prompts scheduled through December if anyone wants to join until then. This October will mark our fifth year and that’s a good long run for something like this. I am good with retiring it in 2023.

I styled the other two DIY dusters over maxi dresses, so I decided to try this one more casually with jeans and a tee shirt. The floral print contains a really pretty shade of blue that matches my denim perfectly. Then I worked in various shades of green with my top, my hat, my green Teddy Blake bag, my newly thrifted L’Artiste ankle boots, and my jewelry.

I don’t wear jeans very often these days, but I really like the bohemian vibe of this floral duster and denim pairing for fall. I still have piles of complete and uncompleted upcycle projects. I really do need to get down to the business of completing the unfinished projects and sharing them here!

What’s your business? And how do you dress for it?

Those colors are so beautiful! I changed a few accessories in my living room to green ones. It looks as if green is energising or something. Looking forward to talk to you next week as it feels like ages ago!

Totally loving your ditzy dress makeovers. I have a red ditzy listed on Poshmark for the same reason – it’s frumpy. It’s generated no interest. If it doesn’t sell by the time I’m ready to do some sewing projects, it will become a duster.

Thanks, Michelle! I think that is a fabulous idea for your frumpy dress. I hope it sells for you, but I also kind of hope it doesn’t! I would love to see it transformed into a duster. It’s only 3 weeks now until I see you!

Shelbee, that outfit is fabulous. I would wear that outfit in a heartbeat. Green looks good on me! I don’t sew. I would have to find something already made.

I don’t believe I have a post related to your party. I sure enjoyed seeing your business atire!
    Take care and best wishes.

You are the fairy godmother to ugly dresses everywhere! I think this may be one of my favorite outfits ever! Your comment about your family being your business reminded me of a phone call I got back in the day! I was a stay at home mom for years. One day, I got a phone call from some company seeking information for something…back before you had to worry about scammers too much. Anyway, the woman doing the survey asked my employment. I told her I was a stay at home mom. She paused for a bit then asked if I did anything else! Well, I was also in college so I told her that. She said, “Fine, I’ll put you down as a student.” I will never forget that. I was so dismayed to think my work as a mom was so unimportant. It’s the toughest job around! Off my soap box now!

Oh my goodness, Marsha, thank you so much! I will gladly accept the title of “Fairy Godmother to Ugly Dresses Everywhere”! I love it. I have always wondered why people look down at stay-at-home moms, too. It is really hard work! I am sure it is even harder if you work another full time job as well. But Army living never really gave me much of an opportunity to work. The few times I did work since having children, I always became that asshole employee who had to leave early or call off because of a kid issue that my husband simply was unable to handle because of his demanding work schedule. So I gave up on outside-the-home employment years ago. And I refuse to feel bad about that! I have read recently that our government is trying to work out additional social security benefits for parents who have stayed home with their children. But I imagine I am probably too old to receive those benefits. My kids will be long grown and out of the house before such a thing would pass in our government!

The dress looks so much better as a duster, and perfect for your bohemian style. I’ve adapted my wardrobe to my new (retired) lifestyle. I still can’t bring myself to part with some of my more corporate suits!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Gail! I think it is way better as a duster, too! When I left the corporate world, I held onto my suits for years. I had so many beautiful ones and it took years to build that gorgeous wardrobe so it was really hard to part with some things. Eventually, none of it fit anymore so that made it a little easier. I am sure you will find ways to adapt these pieces to your current lifestyle!

Thanks, Mireille! I wish these dress started out with buttons all down the front! But it was a really easy DIY that took about 30 minutes to complete. I have a few that button down to the waist that I also have turned into dusters. Those are a little more difficult to do but still fairly easy. I am heading over to read your post now!
