The Thrifty Six: Wearing the Zodiac

The Thrifty Six

I am Gemini, the celestial twins. I was born on May 30, 1974, at 7:47 a.m. in Easton, Pennsylvania, under a Libra moon. When Nancy chose this month’s thrifty theme, I knew I had to incorporate elements of both my sun and moon signs because both are part of me. But I wasn’t entirely sure how zodiac characteristics apply to personal style. I dress the way I dress because it’s what I like to wear but I never before considered the influence that my zodiac sign might have on my personal style aesthetic.

So I did what any curious human might do and I searched online for Gemini and Libra style. This is what I found…

Gemini Fashion & Style: How to Dress Like a Gemini

Gemini is ruled by the restless planet Mercury which contributes to Gemini’s bright and colorful fashion preferences matching this air sign’s playful passion and whimsical curiosity. Geminis are attracted to bright bold colors and sparkly details, a fashion magpie of sorts, combining eclectic mixtures of clashing prints, mixed up patterns, sequins, and other shiny things.

The Gemini color palette leans heavily towards the brightest shades of the boldest colors. Think turquoise, fuchsia, sunny yellow, lime green, and bright white. A splash of neon or a dash of metallics can be used to break up monochromatic looks for colorful Gemini. Gemini style is anything but dull and boring with this twin sign opting instead for sassy style that is bound to start a conversation. Known as the social butterfly of the zodiac, Geminis do like natural conversation starters and what better place to begin than with fun fashion!

Libra Fashion & Style: How to Dress Like a Libra

Libras are a sociable air sign, ruled by glamorous Venus, who value appearances and dress to impress. People with strong Libra influences in their birth charts seek harmony, beauty, and balance in their lives and they like their personal style to reflect this. Libras express their creativity through their personal style but would never admit that appearances do matter to them. Shades of blue and pink dominate the Libra’s preferred color palette. Libra’s strong sense of social justice influences their fashion with a conscience attitude. They care where their clothing comes from and how it impacts the environment, making this thrifty group a perfect fit for conscientious Libra.

So what did I wear to reflect my zodiac birth signs of Gemini Sun and Libra Moon?

Keeping in mind that the main purpose of this challenge is to use preloved items in my outfit, I started with my thrifted Johnny Was dress from a few years ago. This boho style embroidered dress really speaks to my soul and it was such a steal for $7.99. I have no idea what the retail price for this dress was, but Johnny Was dresses retail in the range of $200-500. So preloved is the only way I will ever add this beautiful brand to my wardrobe! I paired the dress with my white cowgirl boots again because they really do look the best with it, although they were not preloved.

Working with the idea of bold colors and clashing prints, I add this crazy green and pink abstract printed jacket that I picked up during my birthday thrift shopping adventure this past May. It has no label and the material is a little icky, but I could not resist the unique style of the jacket or it obnoxious print. The colors seemed to work well with the pinks and greens in the floral embroidery on my dress. I added my bright pink hat with a green ribbon scarf used as a hat band. And on the scarf, I pinned my twin fly brooches that were a gift from my sister many years ago. I believe she found them at a thrift store as well and their “twinness” was perfect to represent the Gemini sign.

With Geminis often called the social butterflies of the Zodiac, I also wanted to incorporate some butterfly elements. So I reached for my upcycled butterfly wrap made from thrift shop scarves. The contrasting colors represent the duality of Gemini’s twin nature while the butterfly effect speaks to the way Geminis socialize with others. I also added my vintage butterfly brooch at the waistband of my dress, but it’s a little difficult to see in the photos. I completed my zodiac style with a bright pink floral statement necklaces, fuchsia tassel earrings, and my rainbow straw bag.

I recognize that there is a lot going on with this outfit, but I have a lot going on in my personality. I certainly am no simpleton and boring clothing, well, bores me. So I will splash on all the colors and prints that I want because they make me happy. And at 49 years of age, I really don’t have any more f*cks to give about the opinions of others on my personal style aesthetic. You might think I dress a little crazy and you might give me the stink eye when you see me walking by. But one thing is for sure, you will see me walking by. I refuse to be invisible in order to make other people comfortable. That’s not my job and I simply won’t do it!

Now let’s see what signs my thrifty friends were born under and how those signs effect their personal style.

The Thrifty Six is a group of international fashion influencers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we will all share an outfit based on a theme that features preloved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling preloved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here to inspire you to shop second hand!

“My zodiac sign is Cancer, a water sign symbolised by the crab. Cancerians are ruled by the moon and said to be passionate, caring, sensitive, creative and secretive. I chose a vintage shirt in a blue pattern to represent water and silver cropped trousers, sandals and thrifted cocktail ring for the moon. My bag, which was a gift from my dad, features a fun crabby Cancerian print.”

“I don’t really pay any mind to astrology, but putting together an outfit inspired by my star sign was such a fun challenge! I am a Scorpio—bold, creative, determined, and mysterious. I can’t say I’m very mysterious (I’m about as open a book as they come) but I like to think this outfit has a little allure to it. The original ensemble I put together with this thrifted bodycon dress was too wintery, so I decided on an edgy date night look instead. For some reason Zodiac signs make me think of geometric prints, and black is one of Scorpio’s go-to colors! I topped the outfit off with my beaded shooting star clutch and a deep red lipstick for a hint of bold.”

“I’m a Sagittarius, which is half man, half horse (thus the cowboy boots). When I googled it, I read that we are ‘playful, fun, and competitive’. The funny part was it said you’d never be able to guess what a Sag outfit would look like. And that’s me to a tee. Unpredictable and colorful. My shorts were originally thrifted as suede pants until I shortened them (see that article here). Everything except the hat is thrifted. I giggled because after I purchased the top, I was reading the label and it’s sleepwear. But you’d never know, and that’s my kind of versatility in a wardrobe.”

“My zodiac sign is achievement-oriented, perfectionist and tidy. But also so focused on achieving goals that this sign can also have an overly critical attitude. And is easily tense and anxious. My zodiac sign is honest, loyal and reliable. And good at cheering up other people. And? Did you guess? My zodiac sign is Virgo! And how do I adjust my outfit to my zodiac sign? Virgo doesn’t like too much hassle. Not even in their outfit. It should look simple, coordinated and elegant. A few beautiful pieces of jewelry are more than enough. The Virgo does not need much, she radiates from within! And see here! This is me! Simple, matchy matchy and elegant. Pre loved top from Cos via Vinted, Zara skirt and Adidas sneakers.”

You should definitely look it up, Jennifer! Actually, I am looking it up for you!

How to Dress Like a Pisces

Pisces is bohemian, romantic, thoughtful, and artistic in her personal style. Pisces considers her clothing carefully as it is a creative expression of her personality. Pisces personalities are deep and layered and this is reflected in her personal style choices with layers and flowing fabrics with aquatic influences. The Pisces aquatic-inspired color palette includes shades of green, lilac, marine blue, white, and ink with seafood green being this water sign’s power color.

How to Dress Like a Leo

Leo style is luxurious and bold. This fire sign likes to turn heads when she enters a room and she accomplishes this through her glamorous and decadent style choices. Leo likes to be the center of attention, so her fashion aims to please the crowd. This lion sign also loves animal prints, naturally, including leopard, cheetah, tiger, zebra, and snake prints. Leos prefer monochromatic looks in bold colors like red, yellow, orange, and gold to make a statement. Leo’s power colors are sunshine shades like oranges, yellows, and golds.

      And there you have it!

Have a wonderful week, my friend!

Ha, that’s the first thing I thought when I saw your outfit, where to look! But it’s exactly as you say, you are seen my dear friend! And you are unique and therefore fabulous! Love how you approached the theme!

  • Nancy Andres

Love learning how to dress for our zodiac sign. Never even thought to do that. I relate most to Shelby’s reasons for dressing the way she does- ” I refuse to be invisible in order to make other people comfortable. That’s not my job and I simply won’t do it!” I wear what I like, how I like it, and that makes me happy. The other five look fabulous too. SUCH A FUN POST! Saw it at InLinkz 279 Senior Salon Pit Stop. My posts this week are #98 through 102. Enjoy this beautiful day and be well. Warm regards, Nancy Andres @ Colors 4 Health

Nancy, thank you so very much! I had so much fun dressing to represent my zodiac sign! And I really have stopped trying to please others in my style of dress. I get the stink eye all the time from strangers who seemingly disapprove of my style aesthetic, but I just smile and wave and wish them all a good day! I hope you are having a most wonderful week! I host a weekly link party on Fridays if you’d like to join!

Thanks so much, Marsha! I definitely felt visible in this colorful outfit! I love Johnny Was clothing so much but it is sooooo pricey! I almost bought a beautiful black velvet kimono by JW in Roanoke in February but I ended up purchasing my two Kantha Bae robes instead. Maybe next year, I’ll go back to the same boutique and get another JW piece!

    Hello my dear,
It is so interessting 🙂 – thank you so much for this blog. I am Gemini too. Therefore I agree with a lot of color tipps. But sometimes I like it to wear black.
Have a great day my Gemini-friend.
    XO Martina

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Martina! It’s always nice to meet a fellow Gemini! I am not wearing any black in this outfit, but almost all of my outfits end up anchored in black. It is a very dramatic color to wear and I love it, too!

Thanks, Rosemary! This was a really unique prompt. It was challenging but really a lot of fun! I think I normally dress very much like a Gemini would according to whoever writes those articles. Haha. According to Deborah Boland, Capricorn style is “Effortlessly chic; Practical but not boring; Appreciates quality fabrics and accessories; Likes black and white, earthy shades, and appreciates a strong red.” So I have followed your blog for quite some time and I am comfortable saying that description really fits your style to a tee! How fun!

Grace, thanks so much! This was a super fun theme to style! A little challenging, but not as challenging as the theme you chose for next month! Eek. What to wear?! I do like a good style challenge though and I am looking forward to it!
