“Jubilee Procession in a Cornish Village” by George Sherwood Hunter | Style Imitating Art

Before we get to the next artwork for Style Imitating Art, I want to let you all know that Marsha of Marsha in the Middle will be joining us as a co-host! Marsha has been participating in these challenges for quite some time now and I am really excited to have her on board!

About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag SalazarShelbee, or Marsha or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

This Week’s Presenter

Salazar chose this painting because it is getting to the cold, dark days of winter and she really likes this work for its depiction of the glowing lanterns in the dusk.

Oil on Canvas, 1897

“Jubilee Procession in a Cornish Village” is an 1897 oil painting on canvas by Scottish artist George Sherwood Hunter. The painting depicts the lantern procession which was held in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. It shows the participants all dressed in white weaving their way through a Cornish fishing village at dusk, carrying bright lanterns to light their way.

I think this is such a beautiful painting. I love the softness of the dusky light on the white dresses contrasted with the bright oranges and yellows of the lanterns. I am finding lots of sartorial inspiration in this work but I still have to get in the ole closet room and see what kind of magic I can stir up in there!

If you are feeling inspired to create your own outfit inspired by this Jubilee Procession and you want to be featured in Salazar’s review post on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, please be sure to submit your photos to 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, January 30, 2024.
