Denim Overalls and Pearls & Link Up On the Edge #261
I am cheating with today’s post and sharing an outfit that appeared in a July guest post for Carrie of Curly Crafty Mom. Last year, Carrie and I played this little game of fashion ping pong with our denim overalls. While we never consulted one another on styling denim overalls, we always seemed to be thinking along the same lines each time we have both styled them.
The very first time Carrie shared her overalls, she wore them in winter with a puff sleeve sweater and beanie hat. I remember commenting on that post how much we were thinking alike because I had just photographed an outfit in my overalls where I wore a sweater and a winter beanie which I shared just a few weeks after Carrie’s post.
The second time she shared her denim overalls, Carrie styled them with a snakeskin print blouse which is so cool and very reminiscent of the way I had styled my very first pair of denim overalls with a snakeskin print cropped top. You see that great minds clearly share great style!
When Carrie mentioned that she needed a few guest bloggers during the summer, I was happy to contribute so she could take a blogging break. When I got to thinking about what kind of outfit I wanted to share with Carrie’s readers, I knew I wanted to do something really crazy and over the top with denim overalls. A while back I had gotten this idea in my head to combine my overalls with some really super dressed up pieces like loads of pearls and stiletto heels. I wasn’t sure if it would work or not, but we never know until we try.
So I went for it.
I struggled a little bit with finding the right top. I wanted something a little bit sassy, probably cropped, maybe sheer, and I literally tried on about 15 different tops until I settled on a sheer half top from Torrid. I put on some black stilettos and layered on basically all of the pearl necklaces I own. (Just like I did in this week’s SIA challenge.)
My overalls are a bit oversized and while they do have belt loops, I don’t think I had ever considered actually putting a belt through those loops. But I needed some waist definition if I was going to make this style work. So I cinched the belt tight so I could sort of blouse out the bib part of the overalls thereby creating the appearance of a waistline under all the bulky denim.
It still wasn’t all that great and from the backside it kind of looks like I might have a saggy loaded diaper in my pants!
Kimono to the rescue!
Since I had already added pearly white and silver accessories to this look, I grabbed my long ivory kimono with silver sequined details along the hem. Backside problem solved.
Overall, it is kind of a crazy outfit combination. But I do love to combine unlikely and contradictory pieces into my outfits because it is very reflective of my personality. I am quite contradictory in many areas of my life and I kind of like that way! Plus my closet is my creative playground and I like to keep my imagination running wild in there.
Would you ever style denim overalls with pearls or other dressy pieces?

Oh how I love this, Shelbee! I don’t know how I missed it when it featured on Carries’s blog!
I adore dungarees, always have—but I’ve never actually had a decent pair. I bought a black pair a few years ago that you might remember from one of the Fab40s posts, but they were so skinny and tight and I really disliked them lol! I would love a pair like yours. They’re totally perfect, especially when styled this way. You’ve inspired me (again!!).

Aw, thanks so much, Suzy! It took me a long while to get on board with dungarees because they are certainly not the most flattering silhouette for anyone really! But they really speak to my inner child and beg for me to get super creative! You know how I love to just get in my closet room and play?! Hehe. I look forward to seeing what this new inspiration creates for you, my friend! Have a wonderful weekend.

How fun to see you and Carrie thinking the same way with those overalls. I am absolutely crazy over the pearls on today’s look – I am a sucker for layered on pearls over denim or anything slightly distressed. Love the look!

Thanks so much, Kellyann! This idea really nagged at me for a long time before I put it into action. I was afraid it might be completely over the top but it ended up being the perfect amount of over the top, I think!

Love the look of pearls with demin; even if I never think of pairing them together myself. I loved Mireille’s post with the mushrooms too. I often take photos of mushrooms when out hiking because I do find them fascinating.

Thanks so much, Joanne! I love combining pearls with all sorts of unlikely things! And now I am hankering for a mushie-seeking hike! I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend.

Hi Shelbee,
The pearls and shorter black top is giving me Madonna circa 1980s vibes! Very cool. Love the overalls. I had been in a Madewell store recently and they have some cute overall styles. Love the addition of the kimono and love that Carrie was an inspiration. I need to do this, if only my 53 year old brain wouldnt forget!
Have a great weekend friend!

Thanks so much, Jess! It definitely has some 80’s Madonna vibes going on! I have always loved her style and probably draw more inspiration from Madonna than I even realize! I had this combination in mind for a long while and I am so happy with the result! I hope you find you perfect overalls soon. Have a wonderful weekend, my friend.

Sheila (of Ephemera)
Shelbee, this is such a FUN outfit! I can see you dancing and spinning in this – it’s a more casual version of Madonna’s Grammy “Like a Virgin” outfit. Like, if she wore overalls instead of a wedding dress, but everything else the same! Just love this – this speaks to me, even though overalls are SO not me! Maybe it’s that it’s so VERY you.
Happy weekend, my dear!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Sheila! I had this idea for overalls and loads of pearls a while back but was unsure of how the two grossly opposite styles would come together. I ended up loving how over the top this look is! And you are so right, it is very similar to Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ outfit but with overalls! Haha. I actually have a style prompt coming up for creating an outfit inspired by a childhood pop icon and I think Madonna is my girl for that one, too! I totally had ‘Like a Virgin” vibes in mind for that one, but now I may have to go a different route. Perhaps a little ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’ inspiration might be in order instead! The movie and the song are both from the same era so same style essentially. It should be a fun one!

Great outfit, Shelbee! I think this one would have totally worked for the latest SIA challenge! Your kimono adds a bit of drapery, which can be interpreted well in the image (you nailed that one perfectly by the way!). I really like the combo you have going here! Your overalls show off a casual look, while your heels and pearls tack on a more formal/business appearance and your kimono tops it off with a touch of elegance, making for an overall well balanced ensemble. Great work!!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Mike, thanks so much for this lovely comment! I do enjoy combining unlikely elements together to make a creative outfit that is quite unexpected. I was really happy with how this whole look turned out. I was afraid it might be a little too over the top, but I suppose there’s no such thing as too much when it comes to personal style! And kimonos are my favorite garment in my wardrobe. I have approximately 60 of them and my collection just keeps growing because I cannot resist a beautiful kimono when I see one! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Mike
You’re welcome, Shelbee! That’s right! There are no “right” or “wrong” answers when it comes to one’s personal style. Whatever fits your personality or preference is right because it speaks to you. It’s just like in art. There’s no “right” or “wrong” answers when it comes to creating a piece of work. Everyone sees the world differently and that’s what makes us all special and unique. 🙂
And wow! 60 kimonos?! That’s so cool! I hope to see more of your collection in the future!
You too, Shelbee! Have a fantastic weekend! ^-^

I love how you get creative with styling your clothes Shelbee. Overalls are one of my favorite pieces and you’ve styled this one so beautifully. The pearls add a bit of sophistication while the crop top add a bit of edge.

Thanks so much, Maureen! I do like to do the unexpected sometimes with my style choices! Dressing up denim overalls was super fun. I got the idea in my head to layer on all the pearls and I wasn’t so sure that it would work the way I wanted, but it did and I love it! I hope you have a marvelous weekend, my friend.

Shelbee, I love your picks this week! Such great images and reading. And this outfit still works! LOVE the pearls with the overalls. We should do a big collab with pearls and see what everyone comes up with!! You and Carrie are definitely kindred spirits in fashion!

Thanks so much, Darlene! I had so much fun with this crazy look! I did something with pearls a long while back for a group collaboration that was really fun considering my love for piles of pearls. We should definitely try something again with an abundance of pearls and pearl-loving bloggers! That would be so much fun! (Let the brainstorming begin…)
