I haven’t written an Adventures in Thrifting post in over a month so I guess this is the perfect time to share how I created a fun Easter outfit from some thrifted pieces that were hanging around my closet.

Do you remember the purple argyle and green argyle sweaters I found in a donation bag in the basement? This pastel pink one was in the same bag along with this seersucker blazer. There is something very nostalgic about seersucker for me. I remember my very first seersucker suit. It was a blazer very similar to this one with matching trousers. I purchased it in the late 1990’s when I was working as an assistant manager for Talbots and I felt so sophisticated and grown up when I would wear it. It gave me all sorts of good springtime feelings with its dainty stripes in beautiful blue and white. I even wore it on my flight to Bermuda for my honeymoon back in 1998. That was a fateful trip but still seersucker makes me so happy.

It was the found seersucker blazer that put this outfit combination into action. As I didn’t have any matching seersucker trousers, I did go scouring the thrift shops to see if I could find a pair to make a complete suit. As many fabulous things that I find in thrift stores, when I am looking for something specific I never seem to have much luck. But then, the sartorial muses still spoke to me as they whispered in my ear…”Why not try the seersucker blazer with your blue and white gingham pants?”

Well, yes, sartorial muses, that is a magnificent idea!

As long as the blues worked well enough together, I felt I was definitely onto something. I was super excited when I held the pants and blazer next to each other and the match was perfectly complementary. Then I had to figure out a top to wear and again those muses were right on point as they sprinkled a little pink argyle magic into my creative mind. And what better combination for Easter than pastel blues and pinks?

I went back and forth a bit about the shoes as I pranced around my bedroom wearing one blue shoe and one blush shoe, standing in front of the mirror first on my left foot then on my right foot. The blush pair sort of just made my feet disappear so I went with the blue pair. And no Easter outfit is complete without a hat! Sticking with my pastel color palette, I finished the look by adding my pink cloche hat, pink statement earrings, and blue ostrich tote bag.

After looking at the photos of this outfit, I realized how completely un-Shelbee the whole thing is, but still I felt pretty damn fabulous wearing it! And I had so much fun taking these photos. There were no people around so I really put on my best super model moves, spinning and strutting and twirling as I pranced down the street in make believe mode. Because sometimes you have to make your own fun!

We don’t really celebrate Easter and have no plans again this year so I most likely will not wear any kind of special outfit on Sunday. Or maybe I will. Just because playing dress up is one of my favorite past times! Plus I figure if I put the effort into creating something that works, why not take some photos to share the inspiration…and have a little bit of whimsical fun in the process.

Do you ever dress outside of your typical style? How does it make you feel?

What are your plans for Easter if you celebrate it? What will you be wearing?

Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style shared her post, Chic in Navy and Black & Fashion Friday Link Up. I have long been a fan of the elegance created by combining navy and black. I remember wearing this color combination back when fashion rules were so ridiculously strict and dictated that this was not a color combination to be worn…by women. Because men, especially men in the corporate world, have been wearing black shoes with navy blue suits forever. And it works. It always works regardless of your gender. Beautiful outfit, Nancy!

Shelbee, how cute is this? I love the pastels and happy prints – gingham, seersucker, argyle. It’s like roll call of all my favorite prints and patterns. The hat looks fabulous on you! Such a feminine and fun look, no wonder you felt so good in it. Love it!
Thanks for the shoutout too – what a nice surprise!

Thanks so much, Kellyann! I swear it was like some outside muse speaking to me as these patterns came together so perfectly. I can’t believe that I didn’t own any seersucker before I found this blazer. It is one of my favorite prints, too. All three prints are very nostalgic to me for some reason. Like a reflection of simpler, more innocent times. It was so fun chatting the other night with you and Darlene! I need to write a post about all of my recent blogger chats! I hope you have a lovely weekend and a blessed Easter, my friend.

Wow! What a good outfit! Love those pastels on you. And you can write that it isn’t very Shelbee, but you make any outfit Shelbee! Those shoes are fantastic! We are going to brunch with friends, outside in the garden, and it wil be very cold, lol. Thanks for the feature, that makes my day!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Nancy! It really doesn’t feel very Shelbee-like, but I sure did enjoy wearing this pastel outfit! Your Easter plans sounds wonderful, my friend. Just be sure to wear layers so you stay warm!

I LOVE this outfit. The colors are just perfect for spring and I have always liked argyle. (Though it is yet another print I now realize I don’t own).

  • Grace

I love hearing your fond memories of your first seersucker suit! Clothing has always been so sentimental for me. That hat is the absolute cutest, too, and I love the pink and blue for Easter.

Thanks so much, Grace! I am the same way with sentimental stories about clothing! I often forget everything about any given situation, but I almost always remember what I was wearing! I still have the outfit that I wore on my first date with my husband nearly 13 years ago! It doesn’t fit, but I can’t get rid of it! Haha. Happy Easter to you, my friend.

Oh! This may just be a favorite outfit of yours! I love the pastels and the blazer with the blue gingham print. A great combo! The pink sweater with the argyle is just a great mix with the pants. Love the colors! I am looking to buy a few blazers for Spring myself, and have just been thrifting at Poshmark lately. I enjoy getting the deal and its fun!
    Have a Happy Easter !

Di, thank you so very much! I really did feel fabulous in this outfit and I was having so much fun with this photoshoot! Now if I ever get the chance to go somewhere, I may have reason to dress this way! Haha. I hope you have a wonderful weekend and a very happy Easter!

Mireille, thank you so much! I do like to explore all sorts of style genres when I create outfits. And things really do just kind of come together for me when I am playing around in my closet room. The ideas come much like a muse whispering in my ear and I am blessed with an exorbitantly large wardrobe so I have many, many, many things to mix and match and play around with. I am glad that it is inspiring when I share how the outfits come together. I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend. And a very happy Easter!

Wow, look at you, you look tiny Shelbee. I’m so sad because I’ve put all my weight back on! Love it all – especially your sandals. Thanks for sharing and hosting today. Jacqui x

Jacqui, thank you so much! I think the camera does me justice by making me look smaller than I really am! Haha. But I have been pretty diligent with my daily yoga and have been trying to eat healthier…but the darn sweets get me every time! You will get back to where you were once we can start moving around outdoors more. I hope you have a very happy and blessed Easter!

I chuckled when I read about you hopping from one foot to the other in front of the mirror. Now that I’ve seen your wardrobe, I can just picture you doing just that lol. Funny thing, I was doing the exact same thing this morning, only mine was for a much more boring outfit to take my dad grocery shopping lol. I couldn’t decide whether to wear my black sneakers or my cream Nikes! I went with the Nikes in the end and I liked the outfit enough that I got Michael to take some blog photos when I got back!
You look absolutely gorgeous, and I wouldn’t necessarily say it is very un-Shelbee, only because you have such an eclectic style which is one of the many things I love about you!
Happy Easter, lovely!! (it’s just another Sunday for me though)
    Hugs
    Suzy xx

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Suzy, thanks so much! I knew I wasn’t the only one who hopped around on one foot and then the other trying to decide which shoes are best! The funny thing is I have so many shoes that any given outfit that I create could have at least a dozen different footwear options in my closet. I look forward to seeing your cute shopping outfit! I have been photographing more of my regular hanging around the house outfits lately without much planning involved at all. And while this outfit felt a little out of my comfort zone, it is how I used to dress back in my days of corporate employment. So it’s not totally out of my personal style. I hope you have a lovely weekend! Sunday is a just another regular day for us as well!

OMB, Shelbee, this look is SOOOO cute on you!! Hey, we don’t want to get pigeonholed into a certain look, right? I am personally all over the place. When people ask my style, I can’t even define it! Lol! But you absolutely can pull off this look and not look just “Talbots” classic but super chic!! I love it all. I have been dying to see it after your hint during our super fun phone call with Kellyann!! I loved hearing your voice, my friend!

    xx Darlene

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Darlene, thanks so much! It is a really fun outfit and I was so excited to share it…even though I felt a little outside of my style comfort zone! But not really because I used to dress like this during my corporate years so it’s more of flashback to my previous style. Whenever I have to find words to describe my personal style, all I ever come up with is the word chameleon. I am a style chameleon, forever changing based on my mood and situation. I had so much fun chatting with you and Kellyann! I had so much energy when we hung up that I couldn’t go to bed until almost midnight. And I am usually in bed by 9:00 p.m. at the latest. So thank you both for that little burst of energy! I needed it. Then the next morning, I got on an impromptu video chat with Suzy and we talked for 2 1/2 hours! I hope you have a very happy and blessed Easter, my friend!

I love that outfit. Especially the hat! We plan on going to church and then maybe out to my mom and dads to sit on the porch and eat an ice cream cone! I think I’m going to wear a long flowy coral flower print dress with a white jean jacket and some casual gold sandals. Hope your weekend is blessed!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Lauren! Your Easter outfit and plans sound lovely! I hope you share some photos on your blog! I just got a white jean jacket and I am super excited to wear it with some flowy dresses. I hope you have a very happy and blessed Easter, my friend.

Shelbee…I adore this!! Why do you think it’s so unyou??
I’m glad you didn’t find seersucker pants to go with the blazer (granted, it’s never how you find them when you’re looking for them). Because the gingham is PERFECT with it!! Yes. And I bet if you have a blue floral pair, that would look fabulous too!!
I always ask my husband for shoe choices. It’s hard to decide sometimes, but I always tell myself, there isn’t ONE way. That many can work!!

Jodie, thanks so much, my friend! I really did enjoy this outfit and I guess it is un-Shelbee for me at this point in life. I used to dress like this back in my days of corporate employment…sans the hat! I love the idea of pairing the seersucker with some floral as well. I have worn these gingham pants with a blue floral top, denim jacket, and sneakers before which was wicked cute. I am thinking the seersucker would be a fun twist on that outfit as well. I think have some blue floral pants, too. Ohh, now you really have my brain going with a million different styling ideas! Because there never is just ONE way to make an outfit work! I hope you have a lovely weekend and a very blessed Easter.

Awwww, thank you fir the feature my friend! It’s a very nice surprise in the midst of a shitty week.

And that outfit! While true that it doesn’t have the usual Shelbee edginess to it, it looks fabulous! I love the seersucker, gingham, and argyle together. Fantastic pattern mixing. Pretty and adorable! Your sartorial muse was on point with this one. Have a wonderful weekend!

Michelle, thanks so much! I agree with all of your lovely compliments! The outfit does not have the typical Shelbee vibe but it is still really freaking cute and fun and I felt fabulous wearing it! I am so sorry about your shitty week. I hope Dan is recovering quickly and comfortably.

  • Sheila (of Ephemera)

Oh, Michelle, what a wonderful outfit! You totally suit pastels, and I LOVE how all these pieces came together so well! I adore those blue shoes (seriously drooling over here – laces, aaaahhhh) and the cloche and the argyle! So much NOT my style either, ha ha!

I’ll be dressing for Easter Sunday (although we don’t celebrate it), as we’ll be doing a “drive by” visit to my Mom’s for an hour or so. I’m also dressing for a gathering (totally legal, less than 10 people) on Saturday/today that will be my first Spring outfit of the year.

Thanks so much for the link-up!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Sheila! It is fun to dress “not like me” sometimes! That is the whole point of playing dress up, after all…to assume other personalities whenever I feel like it! We don’t really celebrate Easter either. I think our big plan for today is to take the kids for a short hike so I will be dressed in hiking appropriate clothing for Easter. I hope you had a wonderful gathering yesterday and enjoy your drive by visit with your mom today!

Thanks, Cheryl! I am not sure how I like the black background but the theme won’t allow me to change it. So I will try it on for a while and see what you all think! Thanks for the feedback! I hope you are having a lovely weekend and a Happy Easter!

Another winning combination, Shelbee!!! I LOVE the searsucker with the argyle and checks!!! I have put together ideas like this since I was very young. I always look at it as color and pattern as secondary. 😀 Nowadays, I tend to wear older 15+ year old floral JC Penny tops with lightly striped capris or just jeans. Anyway, great combination and it works very well!!! Happy to feature your fun fashion look at this week’s Share Your Style #299. <3

Enjoy your spring fashions and playing dress up (because it makes us happy!!!),
    Big hugs,
    Barb 🙂

Barb, thank you so very much! I was so happy with this outfit. Before I started blogging, I was afraid to mix prints. I guess I didn’t really know how but now I feel like an old pro! Stripes and florals always seem to work so I am certain that your outfits are totally on point! It was such a lovely surprise to be featured this week!
