10 on the 10th: October 2023-Autumn Would You Rathers

It’s time for Marsha in the Middle‘s 10 on the 10th series. For October, Marsha has kept with her quarterly/seasonal Would You Rather format to present us with 10 questions about autumn. You can see her other silly Would You Rather questions with my answers for winter, spring, and summer.

After Marsha shares her questions, we are invited to share our answers in blog post form on the 10th of the month. This series is such a wonderful way to share more information about ourselves and to learn interesting new things about others. Anyone is invited to join and answer the questions. It is a great way to start new conversations, make meaningful connections with new people, and have a good hearty chuckle every now and then.

So let’s get right to these autumn inspired Would You Rathers!

1. Would you rather soak your feet in pumpkin innards or in creamed corn?

What a question to start! I would rather soak my feet in creamed corn because all the stringy stuff from pumpkin innards would get all wrapped around and between my toes and I definitely would not like that. So creamed corn it shall be for my foot bath!

2. Would you rather dance with a scarecrow or play poker with a mummy?

I am not very good at poker, so I don’t think I would enjoy playing poker with a mummy or any other freaky creature for that matter. I am not a very good dancer either but I enjoy it much more than poker so let me dance with a scarecrow please. Actually, on Sunday night I am going to be dancing with some mummies. We are going to see Here Come the Mummies in Asheville, North Carolina, and I am so freaking excited!

3. Would you rather eat an apple dipped in caramel or a pumpkin muffin iced with cream cheese frosting?

As much as I love a good hearty pumpkin muffin with heaps of cream cheese frosting, I have recently and suddenly developed a severe intolerance to dairy products. So severe that I have been avoiding all dairy for the past 5 weeks. While it makes me very sad, at least I’m not violently and uncontrollably vomiting. So I would much rather eat an apple dipped in caramel these days. However, I have been dipping my apples in honey lately and that is equally delicious!

4. Would you rather dress as a clown or as a monster for an entire week?

I am much more of a clown than a monster, so I would rather dress as a clown for an entire week. But I would be a happy, silly clown. Not a creepy, scary one!

5. Would you rather rake leaves or burn marshmallows?

I am not a big fan of marshmallows so let me rake leaves! However, we do have a leaf blower so I always have that option, too.

6. Would you rather smell like a bonfire or like a cinnamon stick for an entire month?

I do love the smell of both bonfires and cinnamon sticks. I bet a bonfire with some cinnamon sticks thrown into it would smell amazing! But I think if I had to smell a scent on myself for an entire month, I would rather smell like a cinnamon stick than an overpowering smokey bonfire.

7. Would you rather watch a scary movie or go ghost hunting?

I do not like scary movies at all unless they are so ridiculous that they fail to fright like Christine, Jeepers Creepers, Night of the Lepus, and Llamageddon. I do like ghosts of the friendly sort and I feel terrible for the spirits who get stuck here. I always want to help them so I think I would rather go ghost hunting in an effort to assist the lost souls in finding their way to the other side. St. Anthony, the patron saint of lost souls, is my spirit guide, after all!

8. Would you rather stay overnight in a haunted house or a cemetery?

While I might enjoy hunting and helping ghosts, I don’t think I would be comfortable spending the night in a haunted house. My sleep is sacred and already interrupted by perimenopause so I don’t need it to be interrupted even more by the likes of ghosts and spirits. I don’t think very many spirits hang around cemeteries though so I would rather stay the night surrounded by the quiet of tombstones and the resting peacefulness of corpses in the ground.

9. Would you rather eat pumpkin pie or apple crisp?

I love both pumpkin pie and apple crisp. As you know from my answer to number 3, I am lactose intolerant thereby eliminating pumpkin pie from the list of things I can eat. Apple crisp calls for a bit of butter which I also cannot tolerate but I think that’s easy enough to substitute and still enjoy some apple crisp. So I would definitely rather eat apple crisp because it won’t make me sick!

10. Would you rather be in a pie eating contest or a pumpkin carving contest?

Food eating contests of any sort, whether it’s pies or hot dogs or chicken wings or donuts, completely and totally gross me out. They always have and always will and I would never participate in such a grotesque game! So I would definitely rather be in a pumpkin carving contest. Although I am not very skilled at carving pumpkins. You won’t catch me dipping my toes in the pumpkin guts either!

What a delightful autumn-themed set of “Would You Rather” questions! I thoroughly enjoyed contemplating these quirky scenarios. I have to ask, have you ever tried creating your own pumpkin or apple-themed crafts to celebrate the season?

Thanks so much, Sheron! I enjoyed contemplating and answering these silly questions, too! I actually hate apple themed things. LOL But I am currently working on making some pumpkins and snowmen out of old socks. First I have a very large rag curtain to finish!

Caramel is also dairy: condensed milk + sugar, heated (caramelized). So don’t make yourself sick with that, either!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Eleanor! Funny you should mention the dairy in caramel. Last night, I tried a small amount of Lactaid ice cream with caramel in it (I assume the caramel was also lactose free since it was in the Lactaid ice cream) and about 4 hours later I was experiencing painful digestive issues. So I am not sure what the heck is going on. I tested negative for a milk allergy but my symptoms are really severe for just an intolerance. I guess I need to avoid all dairy!

Oh no I am so sorry to hear you have suddenly developed a milk allergy! I think dairy is to blame for this eczema I’ve developed these past few years. It flares up a lot each time I eat anything containing dairy… but thankfully it doesn’t make me feel sick (yet anyway!). I have never thought of pairing apples and honey but love apples with peanut butter.

Thanks, Joanne! Oh my gosh, this dairy thing is insane! I tried some Lactaid ice cream last night, just a small scoop, and 4 hours later I was doubled over in pain on the toilet. Ugh. I tested negative for an actual milk allergy so we are thinking it is just lactose intolerance, but my symptoms are really severe for just an intolerance. It is super frustrating! Back to my apples and honey when I get a sweet craving!

I love your answers, Shelbee! But, I beg to disagree about the pumpkin foot soaking…hahaha!! I just can’t stand the sight or smell of creamed corn though I like corn any other way. Weird, right? That really stinks about your lactose intolerance as I know you always liked to finish your evening with a glass of milk. Give Michelle a hug for me and enjoy your trip and concert! I hope you’ll do an entire post dedicated to it! I’m not even a fan of the scary movies that are supposed to be not scary. I’m just a chicken!

Thanks for playing along, my friend!!

Thanks so much, Marsha! I am cracking up at your creamed corn repulsion! I actually really like creamed corn. But now I am wondering if there is actual cream in it because then I couldn’t eat it anymore! Ugh. I tried some Lactaid ice cream the other night and that did not work out for me. I’m gonna miss ice cream! And pizza. And Doritos…my favorite PMS snack. The cheesy powder irritates my guts, too. Ugh. The struggle is real!

Hi, Shelbee! I had so much fun reading your answers. We answered many the same except for the #5, I would actually like the burnt marshmellows! And then the last one, if I could pick the pies, I’d do Chocolate, cherry, apple, lemon. not pumpkin tho 🙂
