About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

The Artwork
“You Come First” by Audrey Kawasaki
Salazar chose this gorgeous wood block painting, “You Come First” by American artist Audrey Kawasaki. This piece was included in the artist’s ‘Midnight Reverie’ exhibition which was held at New York’s Jonathan Levine Gallery in 2012. It was done in her characteristic style of illustrating distinctive, erotically charged portrayals of young women. Kawasaki generally uses oils to paint the images directly onto wood panels in a style that has been described as a fusion of Art Nouveau and Japanese manga. “You Come First” was created with oils, acrylics, and graphite on a 16 x 16 inch wood panel.
I find this piece very compelling from the color palette to the intensity in the woman’s eyes. I’m not sure if I can create an outfit that is equally compelling, but I am going to give it my best effort. If you are feeling inspired to create your own outfit based on this wood block painting and you want to be featured in Salazar’s review post on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, please be sure to submit your photos to 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
Happy styling!

I am really digging it, too, Marsha! And I am equally stumped on what to wear. Although I did just get a kimono (for free with rewards points!) that might work out perfectly!
