My dear friend Ada of Elegance and Mommyhood recently invited a lovely group of bloggers to join her for a collaboration featuring What to Wear to a Fall Wedding.
Fall has always been my favorite season for just about everything including weddings. But all weddings and other celebrations look so very different this year compared to what we know. Whether it is a super small gathering or a ceremony shared through Zoom, if you have been invited to a wedding this fall, you still want to dress your best to celebrate this momentous occasion in the lives of your friends or family members.
I have not been invited to any weddings at all recently but a wedding style prompt is always fun. It gives me a reason to get dressed up during a time when reasons to dress up are nearly nonexistent.
So what would I wear to a fall wedding? I suppose it all depends on the dress code as suggested by the bride and groom. I guess what I had in mind when styling my outfit is either a small, casual gathering for a backyard ceremony or tuning in from my living room on Zoom to a small, casual backyard wedding.
After styling my red kimono as a dress back in July, I knew I wanted to try that same styling trick with my favorite green kimono. But the green kimono is a bit different and doesn’t have the inside robe ties that help to keep it closed. So I layered a black lace trimmed slip dress underneath in the event of a wardrobe mishap and secured my kimono with a leather obi belt.
While were taking photos, I decided to see what it all looked like with the kimono left open. I actually think I like this green kimono better as a kimono than as a dress. The opposite is true of my red floral kimono. It is way better as a dress because of the style of the belt and ties.
For my accessories, I chose my mustard furry clutch because I love the way it plays with the colors of the bird feathers on my kimono. I actually first tried the kimono over a mustard velvet swing dress, but the style of dress just wasn’t working for me.
I opted for gold jewelry because it works better than silver with the mustard yellow accents. Plus I had to wear my “Love” necklace from Queen Bitter. It is a wedding after all and weddings are all about the love. Black lace stockings and sky high strappy black heels complete the look (although if I were actually attending a backyard wedding, I would probably choose different shoes). And of course, I always like to wear chopsticks in my hair when I wear kimonos. They just seem to suit the whole vibe.
Now let’s have a look at all of the other fabulous fall wedding styles.
WHAT TO WEAR TO A FALL WEDDING.
EMMA (Style Splash): “I’ve had this dress for years and never had the occasion to wear it. The fabric is light but the style provides plenty of coverage, making it ideal for fall. I’ve picked out the mustard in the snake print pattern with my shoes and bag, and highlighted the purple with my jewellery.”
ADA (Elegance and Mommyhood): “This beautiful silk jacquard black+silver rose dress with the bold ruffled hemline is perfect for a Fall Wedding – if I were to attend one. The herringbone black tights bring texture, interest and warmth to this look. And that fabulous fuzzy grey clutch with all the fraying and tassels brings more depth. With the right makeup and of course some heels in addition to fun statement earrings and some sparkly bracelets, this look would definitely be an elegant option to attend a wedding this time of year. Moto jacket is optional!”
AMBER (Avec Amber): “2020 has certainly thrown us all a number of curveballs, with many celebrations including weddings or wedding receptions being postponed until we can safely celebrate again. This jumpsuit is a piece that I purchased last year for a girls’ trip to Napa, one that I planned to wear to one of this year’s wedding celebrations. Rest assured I will be saving it for one of those rescheduled weddings next year, and I hope that everyone stays healthy and safe during this time!”
DARLENE (Aquamarina Style): “Take that basic slip dress you wore in the summer up a notch for a fall wedding or any dressy event. Adding a satin boyfriend blazer gives the dress a whole new look! Just add neutral pumps and some bling and you are ready to party!”
JULIE (Fashion Trends and Friends): “I love attending weddings and planning what I’ll wear for the event! This fall we were supposed to have two weddings to attend, which I was really looking forward to as well as some long weekend getaways. One in September (my niece) in Oklahoma and one in October (our friend’s daughter) in Wisconsin. Sadly, both had to cancel their plans and simplify their attendance list. I believe the type of wedding and the venue dictate what is appropriate to be worn. I tend to be overly fancy; and for me a wedding is a perfect opportunity to pull out all of my sequins and rhinestones. This is the look I would have worn to the wedding in Milwaukee, Wisc.”
BOJANA (Bo’s Bodacious Blog): “This little, moody floral dress is the perfect addition to your fall closet. You can take it from work, to a dinner date, to a fall wedding without missing a beat. The dress has it all, flouncy sleeves, ruffled skirt, a tie belt to define your waist and shape, as well as a deep v neckline for a little hint of sexy. Pair it up with heels, a little sparkle, and a trusted clutch and you are wedding ready without breaking the bank. Hop on over to the blog to see full details on how to style this dress for a night of dancing and celebrating. “
SHELBEE (Shelbee on the Edge): “I haven’t worn my favorite green kimono in a few years and have been wanting to style it as a dress. So I layered a black lace trimmed slip dress over some lacy stockings and sassy high heels and added my green kimono with a leather obi belt. Then I ditched the belt and showed off the slip dress. I chose my furry yellow bag because I love the way it played with the bright colors in the kimono. Of course, my “Love” choker is a must for any wedding outfit!”
LAURA (I Do deClaire): “Although most weddings are put on hold right now (thanks a lot ‘rona), this collaboration was a fun reason to dress up for a short time anyway! I’ve long said that skirts can be dressy enough for weddings and by pairing this dark floral maxi with a lace top and belting it- it almost passes for a dress! “

I always love doing style challenges and fun collaborations with you!! I love that Bold Green Kimono 👘 so much. The print says Japan especially with the chopsticks 🥢 in your hair. Your tights and furry purse (mine is also a fuzzy clutch) really caught my eye too. You nailed it!
Looking forward to our other group collaborations this month. Happy Hump Day!!
Thanks so much, Ada! This was fun especially since I have no reason to get dressed up for anything these days! I appreciate all of your hard work in coordinating this group! It was so much fun. I am starting to make my rounds now to comment on the other posts, but I do have to start homeschooling for the day very soon, too! The struggle is real.
I love that color on you! So gorgeous the sheen of the kimono is so pretty! I really like it both ways! Fancy, original and pretty! http://www.chezmireillefashiontravelmom.com
The kimono looks beautiful on you, what a great color for fall! And great idea to add the black slip dress under it! Really fun tights too! Ellibelle’s Corner
That green kimono is gorgeous – and I agree, I like it better as a kimono. It looks great with the black slip dress. And I love your tights! What a fun challenge!
Thanks so much, Michelle! I am getting equally mixed feedback on kimono vs. dress, but I totally like it better as a kimono. Plus it was not staying closed properly when I moved just with the belt securing it. This was a super fun style prompt and gave me a reason to get dressed up even for just a short while!
Oh, to be able to attend a wedding in person. Who would have thought we’d all be pining for such things? LOL That aside, your kimono as a dress is a fantastic choice for such an occasion. I’ve had the pleasure of attending two zoom weddings recently so there was no need to dress up but I did anyway. At least from the waist up.
Thanks so much, Rena! Oh, I wish I could attend anything right now! This style prompt was fun though because it gave me a reason to get dressed up even if it was only for about an hour and then I got back into sweatpants! I do love that couples are not letting this pandemic stop them from getting married! So, cheers to Zoom and all it has done for so many people!
Aw, Lucy, thanks so much! I was really happy with the result of this outfit which was literally a throwing together of things in my closet. I hope you have fantastic day, my friend!
Radi, thanks so much! It kind of makes me want to go anywhere! I am getting really bored with all the staying at home business. I hope you are having a wonderful week!
What a hot mama!! You look feminine and edgy at the same time and I love it! And another gorgeous kimono–how can I keep up!? Haha! That jade color is SO pretty on you. Darn–I wish we were REALLY going somewhere to wear these outfits, right?
Darlene, thanks so much! This is my favorite color ever and one of my favorite kimonos! It would be nice to dress up and go somewhere, wouldn’t it?! I hope you are having a fabulous week, my friend.
Amber, thanks so much! This shade of green is my favorite color ever and this kimono is one of my favorites from my ever growing collection. I hope your week is fabulous!
Thanks so much, Lovely! The main reason I grew my hair long was so I could wear chopsticks in it! Well, and pigtails and braids. I always wanted hair long enough for all of those things. It took me 46 years to get there! I hope you are having a wonderful week.
Loved this collaboration and seeing everyone hunt their closets rather than buying something new for an occasion we don’t have, LOL. You pull off a slip dress very well. Love that, especially with the kimono as a layer and pop of color. Although I didn’t mind it at all as a dress, I do love how elegant and flowy it seems to work as a kimono. I’d definitely be sing and reusing that piece through the fall season. I can see it with dresses, fitted black pants or jeans. Also, 100% agree that gold just works with mustard!
Bo, thanks so much, my friend! I definitely don’t wear this kimono as frequently as I should! It feels very fallish to me and we don’t get a very long fall where I live. We go straight from summer into winter very quickly and the winters are brutally cold. Kimonos just don’t keep me warm enough! This was such a fun theme and gave me a reason to dress up which was so nice! Everyone created such beautiful looks for this collaboration!
I love doing collaborations with you and always look forward to see how you’ve styled the theme! You never disappoint! I love your flare! So creative how you styled your kimono for this wedding guest look! I especially love your patterned hose and the pop of yellow in your clutch!
Julie, thank you so much for these wonderful words! I love doing collaborations because the style prompts literally give me the only reason to get dressed these days. Plus I do love playing dress up and welcome any challenge. I tend to get a little crazy sometimes with style themes though. Haha. It’s all in good fun because why the heck not? Life is short, wear the cute outfits!
I remember remember a kimono type robe made the scene as a fashion statement to add over a dress for special occasions. I love your turquoise kimono, on one of my favorite colors.
Thank you for sharing this week onomhgww! To be featured this coming week on party #228.
Be sure to stop by and share all of your posts. Have a great weekend!😊
Aw, Karren, thanks so much! You are too kind! I do love the drama that a kimono can add to any outfit. I look forward to your post this week! I hope all is well and you are enjoying the weekend, my friend.
Emma, thanks so much! This was super fun to get all dressed up even with no place to go. I currently only get dressed for style prompts it seems. I never leave my house to go anywhere!
