What to Wear Mushroom Picking & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up #92
I cannot thank you all enough for all of the wonderful words of encouragement on Friday’s post about losing my mojo. I felt so much kindness from all of you as I make my way through this transition in my life. And I took much of what was shared to heart…I took the weekend off from blogging and will be slowly easing back into it this week. I am planning my Link Up On the Edge post for Thursday and I will have a special birthday link up on Friday to celebrate Monica’s birthday! And then I might be making some minor changes…but that remains to be seen.
In the meantime, I have been spending lots of quality time with family and friends. Making connections and memories and finding lots of inspiration in the wonderful conversations I have been having and the beautiful things I have been witnessing. Last weekend, we took the children on a mushroom hunt at Bonaparte’s Cave State Forest in Harrisville, New York. And this weekend, we went on a haunted tractor ride, made our way through a 4 acre corn maze, and picked some pumpkins at Wheeler Creek Pumpkin Patch in Clayton, New York. I will be sharing those photos on Thursday.
But for now, this post is about what to wear mushroom picking! Basically, something warm and comfortable…all fashion tossed aside. Sneakers and lots of layers. It started out really cold but we warmed up as we walked. I wasn’t much concerned with my clothing, to be honest. I was warm and cozy and enjoying my family as well as the crisp autumn air.
The longer we walked in the woods, the more observant we became. You know, it is amazing how much you notice when you shut out all of the noise of life and get in touch with nature. There are literally mushrooms of every variety right beneath our feet, at every turn, every where we looked down, or up, for that matter. In the brush, on the trees. And the more varieties we discovered, the more excited we became to know about this world right in front of us that we all too often miss.
And with that, I am just going to leave you with some photos of my family in the woods and all the fabulous discoveries we made.
Unfortunately, I am unable to identify mushroom varieties, but they still are super fascinating to view!
Can you spot the frogs here?
When is the last time you unplugged from everything and just escaped into the woods? It really is quite invigorating and refreshing and oh so good for the soul! Thanks for all of your kindness!
And since we just went mushroom picking last weekend and pumpkin picking this weekend, I couldn’t help but feature two posts about apple picking!
Alicia of Between the Pearls shared her fun post, Apple Picking in Alabama. I am loving her outfit with the perfect apple red cardigan and her tips for first time apple pickers!
Roxanne of Glass of Glam shared her post, Apple Picking in Indiana. Roxanne’s photos are just so stinking cute!
Keeping it on the edge,

LOVE those family pictures, and I’ve noticed a larger than usual assortment of fungi growing everywhere this fall. They are so interesting, and some of them are so cute@

Thanks so much, Michele! I am noticing a lot of extra growth outdoors as well! It has been a very wet season though so I suppose that is the reason.

What a great thing to do!! I really like to look at the different mushrooms when we hike too. They really are interesting and it’s amazing how many different varieties you’ll find on one hike.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Julie, thanks so much! It really is interesting to find all the different mushrooms. I have a very good friend who is obsessed with mushrooms and knows everything about them. She went through all of these photos and told me what the different species were, but I couldn’t remember it all to include it!

So fab to see your beautiful family – you all have the best smiles!! Mushrooms are fascinating aren’t they!? We have so many in our garden as Surrey is full of trees. We get the huge red ones – straight from a fairy tale illustration. But also some pretty ugly ones too haha xx

Maria, thank you so much! Oh the big red fairy tale mushrooms! How fun! I don’t think I have seen that kind in real life yet but I will be super excited if ever I do!

I have never been mushroom picking. It sounds like an adventure. Anytime when you can get out in nature and pick some fresh fruits or veggies is a good time!

Nina, I agree with you completely…getting closer to nature is the best way to cleanse one’s mind and soul and rejuvenate our bodies! Searching for mushrooms forces you to pay closer attention to what’s around you which in turn clears the mind of unnecessary clutter. Thanks so much for stopping by, my friend! Shelbee,
It’s still hot in Atlanta and I can almost feel the fall weather by reading your blog post!
How fun to go mushroom picking!
My dog, Bruno, is a Lagotto Romagnolo, which is bred to be a truffle hunter! He would have loved to been in the woods with you!
Hugs,
Robin
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Oh wow, Robin, a truffle-hunting dog! I want one of those! We had about a week of nice crisp, cool fall weather which has been followed by a few days of muggy hot summer weather! 80 plus degrees yesterday with a high in the 40’s by Friday. This weird Northern NY weather is so confusing! But we will be spending as much time outdoors as we can before the winter sets in.

Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom
This looks like such a fun activity and I bet the boys LOVED it. There is a morel mushroom that folks love to pick around here and grill over steaks. If you Google a photo of it (unless you know what I’m talking about), they have a very distinct look. You look very stylish yet cozy for mushroom picking!! 🙂 I love the hint of the plaid and layers are always your friends outdoors this time of year!

Carrie, thanks so much! I have heard of morel mushrooms but I did have to Google it! What an interesting looking variety. I don’t think I have seen any of those around here, but I will sure be excited if I do now that I know a little bit about them! We have been trying to do more outdoor activities as the winter is nearing because once winter hits us here in Northern NY, we are pretty much confined indoors for 6 long months!

Shelbee,
These photos are gorgeous! And I have to say your outfit is actually a lovely fall look! It’s nice to unplug for a bit and I’m so glad you and your family are enjoying time together. Treasure every moment as the time goes by SO fast. Before you know it, your kids will be 26 years old–like mine! Haha!

Darlene, thanks so much! I felt cute in the mirror in my outfit, but wasn’t as pleased with it in photos! But I suppose I was playing in the woods with my kids so who really cares what I was wearing, right? I am absolutely guilty of sometimes rushing the moments with my kids, so it is very important for me to be reminded to slow down and enjoy these little guys while they still want to spend silly adventure time with mom and dad. Thank you for the reminder!

I’ve found that being outside in nature is the fastest (and best) way to calm my anxiety. I’m lucky enough to live a 10-minute walk from a national park (the Presidio) and it’s totally my happy place. I hope your mushroom-picking trip was a good step toward getting your mojo back!
Cheryl Shops | http://www.cherylshops.net
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Cheryl, I agree with you completely that a walk in the park or the woods is a wonderful way to calm one’s anxiety. The fresh air, the exercise, and being a bit closer to the earth from whence we all came is a magical remedy for many of life’s woes. We all need to do it more often. I know I sure do! Thanks for stopping and sharing your experience!

I have always wanted to go mushroom hunting! I would be afraid to eat anything I identified, though. The pictures of your family are adorable. I am sure they will help you over this rough patch and help you get your mojo back. Sometimes it is for the best to take a step back, relax, and ponder exactly what we want our lives to look like. I have every confidence that you will figure it out! 🙂
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thank you so much, Laurie! I really did need to step back a little bit and I am already feeling much more relaxed. And we don’t eat any of the mushrooms we pick either because I don’t know enough about them! So we just look them and take pictures and pick a few that the kids like to show off!

Ada
How cute are you in all those layers. Love the camo jacket. Girl is it cold there?! I have seen a lot of chilly-weather outfits from you lately. I did not know there was such a thing as mushroom-picking but oh my. Were most of them edible or poisonous?! I also love the mushroom shades of your cardigan and sneakers. All the nature and the family pics are adorable!
P.S. Cannot wait for our Birthday Collaboration post on Friday.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Ada! It got a little chilly here but then it warmed up into the 70’s and 80’s again. But that will end by Friday where it looks like we will be firmly planted in the 40’s and low 50’s. So the cold is definitely near! My understanding of the mushrooms is that some are edible, however, I do not know enough about them to chance consuming any of them. We just like to look for them and see all the different varieties. My kids picked a few different mushrooms to take into school and show their teachers, but none were eaten. I also am looking forward to Friday’s post! I can’t wait to see what everyone wears and writes!
