We Heart Halloween (Tim Burton Style) & Your Own Twist Link Up #49
Four years ago, Monica and I launched this new fun style challenge series which began with our Halloween looks. Every year since 2018 our October theme has been Halloween costumes, making this our fifth Halloween collaboration. In that very first Your Own Twist post, we both styled our Halloween looks separately without consulting one another and ended up both creating fashion icon costumes. I portrayed Iris Apfel while Monica went with Audrey Hepburn.
For our 2019 Halloween collaboration, we again created our looks separately and both ended up wearing giant unicorn heads. That coincidence really made us laugh! The following year in 2020, our looks were not as in sync as the previous two years but we both did end up incorporating skeletons into our costumes. And then last year, Monica was pregnant and created the cutest “pregnant Dorothy” costume. She sent me her photo before I even thought about my Halloween costume, so I stayed with her Wizard of Oz theme and dressed as a tin midwife to help deliver that magical Halloween baby! Haha.
For our fifth Halloween collaboration, Monica took the initiative to suggest a theme ahead of time since we had inadvertently coordinated every other year. So this year, on purpose, we bring to you our Tim Burton inspired Halloween costumes.
In case you are not familiar with Tim Burton, he is an American film maker known for his gothic fantasy and horror films. Some of his best known films include Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, and Alice in Wonderland.
For my Halloween look, I decided to add my own twist by combining two Tim Burton characters into one. Can you tell which two characters? The wedding dress and striped duster should be all the clues you need to see that this Corpse Bride is about to marry Beetlejuice!
When I began researching Tim Burton films to decide which direction I wanted to go, I immediately thought of my thrifted black and white striped duster which has all the Beetlejuice vibes. Then Monica shared a Beetlejuice look on her blog two weeks ago which really cemented this idea for me. But I had no idea how to turn this duster into a Beetlejuice costume. Until I remembered my collaboration with Ever Pretty from last summer when I received this beautiful white wedding dress. The handkerchief hem was perfect for creating a Corpse Bride look so I decided to combine the two, mostly for practical purposes in that I needed some extra layers for coverage and warmth in this brisk fall weather.
Then it was time for makeup. I am no a makeup artist and have literally no skills when it comes to costume makeup. So I found a YouTube tutorial for Corpse Bride makeup and I did my best with some blue liquid eyeshadow. It is nowhere near as cute and professional as the tutorial and I made a giant blue mess of things in my bathroom, but I think it’s good enough for my purposes here. Although I do think I resemble an alien more than a corpse. I don’t think I will be putting makeup on my face like this ever again though. I hate the way it feels and every time I touched my face I left a trail of blue fingerprints everywhere!
And that is my Corpse Bride a.k.a. Mrs. Beetlejuice costume! Be sure to hop on over and see Monica’s Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter costume. And if you have your own Halloween looks to share (or anything you would like to share), please add it to the link party below.
About Your Own Twist
Your Own Twist is a monthly link party hosted by Monica of Monica Hayworth (formerly Jersey Girl, Texan Heart) and me on the third Thursday of every month with the goal of inspiring some of our friends to get creative with personal style.
The idea behind this collaboration is to take one common piece or theme and style it our own way with our own twist…Monica and I have both taken a lot of fashion inspiration from one another over the past few years even though we have totally different styles. It is always fun to see how we can interpret similar items in unique ways or what kind of twist we will each bring to the chosen theme.
We will let you know the themes well in advance in the event that you would like to use the theme for your own post and add it to the link party. However, any fashion posts are welcome regardless of whether you used the theme or not. Check out the graphic below which has some of our upcoming style prompts.
We invite you all to join us next month for Neutral November!

You did a great job Shelbee – love the make up! I need to check out that tutorial. I am dressing up for Halloween and bought a make up kit at Walmart. Now I need to fugure out what to do with it! You make the prettiest hybrid Corpse Bride!

Terrific costume…but I hear you on the blue make-up, haha! I think it would work even without the make-up, though. Other fans can see what you did with the outfit itself.

Thanks, Sally! I was actually just thinking that when I was looking at these photos…it’s kind of a cool look without the makeup just as a regular funky outfit!

Ha! Awesomeness! I do love that striped duster. And the minute you mentioned Beetlejuice, I saw that connection. I never saw the Corpse Bride though. You both look amazing.

What a fun outfit! I have about 100 costumes I’ve made for theatre productions at the last school I worked at. They’ve been neatly boxed for almost a decade. Some of the ladies at work and I talked about sewing, and I mentioned my trove. We’re thinking of having a dress-up party and photo shoot for big girls ;).
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Oh my goodness, Anita, a dress up party and photoshoot for grown ups sounds like the best idea ever! I love that you have all of those costumes still. They definitely deserve to come out and play again! I bet they are gorgeous costumes and I would love to see some of them if you do have your dress up party!

Oh, I immediately knew Beetlejuice and thought Corpse Bride! Love this look so much, Shelbee! What a fun, fun prompt! I adore Tim Burton and all of his artistic weirdness. My granddaughter is going to be the Queen of Hearts, but I couldn’t convince her to do his version! I need to figure out my costume soon! Thanks for the link party!

Thanks so much, Marsha! This was really fun! I was absolutely determined to create this costume without buying anything new and I almost caved in and bought a Corpse Bride mask. I was so intimidated by the makeup idea that I was going to spend $13 and cheat! Haha. But then I decided that would be super wasteful because I would never use the mask again so I gave the makeup my best effort instead. I’m glad I did even though I still think I look more like an alien or a Smurf than a corpse! I love the Queen of Hearts costume idea for your granddaughter and I can’t wait to see what you do for Halloween!

Oh, Shelbee!!! I LOVE your Corpse Bride! It’s one of my Amy’s favorite movies. We sat and watched it together while she was in high school or early college. We also watched all the Hayao Miyazaki films, too. She loves Tim Burton films… It all began with Barbara and Adam Maitland in Beetlejuice, Lydia and the others!! Great film!!! It’s a crazy favorite along with Death Becomes Her and other dark film comedies. 😉
Oh, and I think your face makeup is great! Sorry it got fingerprints everywhere… You picked the perfect place to shoot, too. LOVE the mansard roof on the mausoleum! And the green doors… <3 Happy to feature your post at Share Your Style #366 this week for you. <3
Happy All Souls Day/Día de Muertos!
Barb 🙂

Oh wow, Barb, thanks so much for this lovely comment and for featuring my post! I loved reading your memories of Tim Burton movies! I actually have never watched Corpse Bride but Beetlejuice I have seen dozens of times. I think I prefer Tim Burton’s older stuff live action stuff. I have never really been able to get into his animated movies for some reason. But it sure was fun creating a Tim Burton inspired Halloween outfit!
