The Magnificent 8 are Putting Pins on Things
The Magnificent 8 is back sharing with you some unique and interesting ways to style brooches or pins. If you know me at all, then you know that I have small collections of all sorts of different fashion items…shoes, kimonos, hats, gloves, tights, socks, coats, jeans, scarves, and many more. So it should come as no surprise when I tell you that I also have a small collection of brooches that I have acquired throughout the years. Some are vintage and antique, some are heirlooms, some were thrifted, some were gifted, and some were bought at retail stores most likely on clearance. But all of them have a special place…

Opposite Day & Your Own Twist Link Up #40
January 25 is National Opposite Day, a creative child’s philosophy course turned into an annual celebration of opposites. This self referential paradox lends itself to a day filled with all sorts of philosophical questionings which can lead to fun experiments in opposites. Have you ever wondered what the world would look like if everything was the opposite of what it is? What if the sky were green and the grass were blue? What if mathematics was not an exact science? What if we walked on our hands instead of our feet? What if children ruled the world? What if rain fell up instead of down? The aim of Opposite Day…

The Thrifty Six Brighten Up January
Here we are in the deepest, coldest, grayest part of winter in the North Country and I am scrambling to type this post at the last minute hoping I don’t lose internet connection. I can hear this giant ice and snow storm pelting my house. It sounds sort of like someone is throwing rock salt against the windows with an unwavering consistency. I took a peek out into the darkness of 4:30 a.m. and the snow was blowing so wildly at about 40 mph that it looks like there some sort of apocalyptic event going on out there. The weather people are predicting total snow accumulations of 8-12 inches before…

5 Barriers to Effective Communication & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up #255
Communication is an essential skill for all of us to get through life as societal creatures. And good communication is a way to enhance our relationships with others. While it is a necessary skill and one that all humans possess on some intrinsic level, the art of good communication still continues to be a very difficult thing for many of us to learn. I suppose it all comes down to how we define communication. If you get stuck in the idea that communication is merely the speaking of words that someone else hears then you have much to learn about strong, healthy communication amongst human beings. Communication is so much…

Good Girl Gone Plaid & Link Up On the Edge #276
“It’s Christmas Eve! It’s the one night of the year when we all act a little nicer, we smile a little easier, we cheer a little more. For a couple of hours out of the whole year, we are the people that we always hoped we would be.” Bill Murray Well, I don’t know if I have been a really good girl, but I suppose it depends on who you ask. I do try my very best to lead with love and light, but I am only human and I do fuck up a lot. But I am the first to admit it when I do and I am also…

The Thrifty Six are Ringing in the New Year
How did we get to the end of the year so quickly? With the New Year fast approaching, Grace has chosen New Year’s Eve outfits for our thrifty theme this month. Before I get to fashion talk, however, first I am going to share a story, a kind of sad story, about my own New Year’s Eve tradition and it came to be. When it comes to New Year’s Eve, I am very much a homebody. I have always been. I remember New Year’s Eve of 1990. I was 16 and it was the first year that I was invited to a party outside of my own home and I…

Adventures in Thrifting Part 14: White Zara Apron Dress & Link Up On the Edge #274
Back in September, I found two supremely adorable Zara apron dresses on one of my thrifting adventures. The first one I shared was a blue floral print apron dress styled in a very similar way to this white one with a black turtleneck and black chunky boots. I actually styled and photographed this white one first and I liked the layering trick so much that I stuck with it for both dresses. It is the perfect way to take a sleeveless sundress into the colder months. This dress is a very heavy cotton twill material also making it versatile for multiple season wear. The blue floral one is lighter weight…
