The Thrifty Six: Inspired by On Screen Style Icons
My frugal friends and I are back with the next episode of our Thrifty Six adventures. Grace has chosen the theme for this month’s challenge…On Screen Style Icons…which can be taken in a variety of different ways depending on your interpretation of “on screen”, “style”, and “icon”.
First of all, style is totally and completely subjective. Second, who we view as an icon (a person worthy of great respect) is also wholly subjective. And finally, which screen are we talking about? A television screen, a movie screen, or the screen of a mobile device? When you throw all that into the pool of influences, you suddenly have a lot of iconic people with stellar style on have appeared on screen somewhere to inspire you.
You could consider television or movie stars or the characters they have played; musicians and rock stars who have appeared on screen; professional athletes who have been televised; royals or politicians; and YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok celebrities. In fact, between the eight of us (remember you get two bonus looks from Charlotte and Lesley on Jodie’s blog), we have been inspired by music icons, movie stars, a television character, and an Instagram personality/television host.
Can you tell yet who I have chosen as my icon for this challenge?
Diane Keaton! She has been one of my fashion icons for as long as I can remember. She had her breakthrough role as Kay Adams in The Godfather in 1972. I was born in 1974. In 1977, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her lead role in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall. By the time I reached an age to notice celebrities and recognize great style, she was still riding high at the peak of her career. Actually, I think she is still riding high at the peak of her career over five decades later. At the age of 77, Diane Keaton is fabulous as ever, inspiring women of all ages to live in our light and dress as we please.
She is a master of menswear, a maven of neutrals, a doctor of the dramatic, and a genius in creating bold and interesting combinations in black and white. She is undeniably a fashion icon on multiple levels, from her personal style choices to her unwavering commitment to remaining true to herself. She is unapologetic in fashion decisions, wearing every outfit with confidence, and looking freaking fabulous every step of the way.
Remember a few years ago when she wore an oversized white button up shirt with thigh high python boots? She looked so amazing! It turns out that she doesn’t agree and kind of hated that outfit, but I used it as part of my inspiration for this look anyway.
I also took inspiration from her bold black and white styles. As you can see, she doesn’t wear much print. But when she does, it is either an animal print or a black and white print. And she is absolutely my inspiration when it comes to hat-wearing! She rocks a hat unlike any other and she has the most wonderful collection of crown covers that rivals my own.
What I wore to represent the unique style of Diane Keaton…
I layered an oversized white button up linen shirt underneath a full black brocade mini skirt, leaving the shirt tails hanging longer from beneath my skirt for some funky drama. I added a fitted black turtleneck as a base layer because it was still a little chilly when we took these photos. I also wore a black and white polka dot necktie around the turtleneck, striped tights, leopard peep toe booties, and a black cloche hat. I accessorized with classic pearl earrings and a lace corset belt.
I couldn’t decide which blazer I liked best with this outfit or if I prefer it with no blazer at all. The black velvet tuxedo blazer seems more in line with Diane Keaton’s style, but I could also see her wearing a bold black and white houndstooth print as well. I will let you decide. Which of the three ways do you like best…black velvet blazer, houndstooth blazer, or no blazer at all?
Since the idea behind this group is to create these outfits with preloved items, let me break that down for you, too. The white oversized shirt, the skirt, the necktie, the shoes, and both blazers were all purchased second hand. My turtleneck, belt, tights, hat, earrings, and gloves were purchased new at retail by me.
I had a lot of fun with this style challenge. For as long as I have admired Diane Keaton’s style, I have never consciously created an outfit inspired by her so I really appreciate that Grace chose On Screen Style Icons for this month. It was the perfect opportunity for me to do that which I should have done years ago!
Now let’s check out my thrifty friends and their On Screen Style Icon inspired outfits.

I loved seeing all of your photos because I didn’t realize you had on the coolest belt too. You did so good with this because Diane Keaton is so unique.

Thanks so much, Jodie! I love corset belts! It is so difficult to properly photograph outfits that are so heavy on black though. All the details, like my corset belt, get lost! This was a super fun challenge. Everyone looks amazing!

Oh, I knew immediately who you were! I love Diane Keaton’s style for her. If I were longer and leaner, I’d love it for me, too! I love how you put this outfit together…its’s perfect! I like it with the plain black blazer the best. I think Diane would be so complimented by this, Shelbee!!

Thanks so much, Marsha! I think I prefer the black blazer as well, but I always struggle with photographing all black outfits. They sometimes end up looking like big blobs of darkness on the screen. As much as I adore Diane Keaton’s style, it is definitely much better on her than on me! I guess that’s why it’s Diane Keaton’s style and not Shelbee’s style! But I had fun anyway and felt great in this outfit.

Rocking Keaton style, got it in one. Monochromatic and androgynous she occasionally slips in these flared skirts to show off a slim figure. Fabulous!

Thanks so much, Emma! I have a few neckties but I wear this polka dot one the most frequently. It seems to always match my clothes when I decide to wear a necktie. They always have piles of cool neckties at my local thrift shop. Best place to shop for any menswear, in my opinion!

The second I looked through our photos, I just knew you had chosen Diane Keaton as your inspiration, Shelbee! I too, am a HUGE fan of hers. I just love her. You look really beautiful in this outfit, and I reckon Diane would be super impressed!

Aww, thanks so much, Suzy! I can’t believe that this is the first time I have styled an outfit inspired by this amazing woman! This was a really fun challenge!

Barbara
I absolutely love Diane Keaton and think she’s atrociously underrepresented in movies nowadays. I associate her with turtlenecks as much as with shirts, ties and hats. Have a great weekend ahead!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Barbara! I tried to incorporate as many of her signature pieces as I could…the turtleneck, the necktie, the hat, the white button up. This was a super fun dress up challenge! I hope your weekend is lovely as well!

Grace
You absolutely nailed this theme Shelbee!! I could absolutely see the Diane Keaton resemblance even before you shared the inspiration pics. I like the look better with the black jacket, but both look really good!

Aww, thanks so much, Alexandra! I am no Diane Keaton but I accept the compliment nonetheless! Hehe.
