The Magnificent 8 are Putting Pins on Things
The Magnificent 8 is back sharing with you some unique and interesting ways to style brooches or pins. If you know me at all, then you know that I have small collections of all sorts of different fashion items…shoes, kimonos, hats, gloves, tights, socks, coats, jeans, scarves, and many more. So it should come as no surprise when I tell you that I also have a small collection of brooches that I have acquired throughout the years. Some are vintage and antique, some are heirlooms, some were thrifted, some were gifted, and some were bought at retail stores most likely on clearance. But all of them have a special place in one little drawer of my jewelry dresser. Yet I somehow forget to wear them more often than I should.
We left it up to Grace to choose the style challenge for this month’s collaboration since she is currently studying abroad in Ireland and is working with a minimal wardrobe. So far, her style posts from Ireland have be totally on point with her capsule travel wardrobe. I can certainly learn some things about packing for my upcoming trip to North Carolina!
Anyway, let’s get to the subject we are here to discuss…brooches and pinteresting ways to style them. In ancient times, brooches were used in a functional capacity to fasten or secure clothing. The earliest known brooches consisted of thorns, sticks, and flint. The metal pins that we use today were first introduced during the Bronze Age, but they were still intended for practical use not ornamentation. Brooches began to lose their practical purpose after the Middle Ages and made the transition to purely decorative adornment.
While my brooch collection is intended for ornamentation, decorative pins still can serve the practical purpose of securing or fastening clothing while also adding an interesting focal point to your outfit. In fact, I just used a brooch to secure the top of a furry vest for my Opposite Day outfit last week.
For today’s style challenge, I actually started with the outfit without any idea in mind about pinning brooches on myself and where. I went shopping at Target last week and found a few really cute things like this velvet duster and the plaid mini skirt I am wearing here.
The skirt was on the clearance rack (my favorite place to shop) for less than $15. I have a soft spot for plaid mini skirts and green and blue is such a rich color combination that I could not resist the deal on this one. As you can see, I paired the skirt with a dark green turtleneck, tights, over the knee socks, and gloves. Then I layered on a thrifted black velvet blazer and added black patent Mary Janes because they go with the academic vibe of a plaid skirt and blazer.
I have had this light blue slouchy hat for a few years and I love how perfectly it picked up the blues in the skirt. And then I had my pinteresting brooch ideas hit! I love adding a sparkly pin to jazz up a hat. That is probably the way I wear brooches most often. Or on my coat or blazer lapels in the traditional way. I have this pretty sparkly green flower pin that I wore on a different hat styled with a reindeer dress.
The color was perfect with this new outfit so I pinned it on my hat. Then I decided I wanted to wear my gold owl brooch because it, too, goes with the academic theme of my outfit. These days when I add a pin to my lapel, it usually gets lost in my hair or competes with my necklace. In his case, it was doing both, so I moved Mr. Owl down to my pocket so he could see you and you could see him. I like him much better there than on my silly lapel, I think.
I had intended to photograph my complete collection of brooches but I forgot and then ran out of time. I always have big intentions like that which never pan out because I am so lazy!
Before we get to the creative pinnings of my magnificent friends, I want to share my new DKNY puffer coat that I found when I was decorating my Happie Hippie Hallway. I have been wanting a long black puffer coat like this for a while. I bought a navy blue belted one about 5 years ago that has served me well, but the belt annoys me and I was getting kind of bored of the navy blue. I love the oversized coziness of this black one and have worn it every single day since I bought it. The retail price was $320, but the TJ Maxx price that I paid was $49.99. It is definitely worth all of that because it keeps me super warm in this brutal cold.
And now I am going to wrap it up and send you over to check out my magnificent friends to see how they have pinned things. Just click on the links to their blogs below.

That’s a very nice look. I love blue and green together. Love the pin on your baret! And what a great bargain for that coat. It will serve you well in thse horrible temperatures!

Thanks so much, Nancy! I really liked this outfit, too! And this coat has been the most amazing thing these past two weeks. It is so warm and cozy! Oohh, let’s try to video chat soon! I have a video call with Suzy in about an hour!

You look so cute in your hat with that brooch. Not just anyone could wear that. And really liked reading the history of brooches. Read it while I was subbing for a 5th grade class this morning. Hope the teacher doesn’t have covid 😬
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Tricia! I was afraid this hat wouldn’t support the weight of the brooch, but I figured it out and loved the result. I hope the teacher you are subbing for is covid-negative! I just tested my 8 year old who was thankfully negative but he has a rotten sinus infection which is making him kind of grumpy. Stay well, my friend!

Although as a collector of brooches, I have found many ways to wear them, and have pinned brooches to mh berets, I have somehow never thought of pinning one to the pocket of my jacket. What a great idea! xxx

Oooh, Ann, I am so glad that I was able to offer you a brand new way to wear a brooch! I am certain that you have some super creative ways to style unique jewelry pieces so I am flattered by your compliment as well! Thank you so very much.

I just love you even wore two brooches Shelbee. Now there’s the way to go the extra mile!!
I just pinned one to my hat lately (well, it was Rob’s hat, haha). And putting it on the pocket of your blazer is fantastic…it certainly shows off wonderfully there.
I’m so glad we picked this theme because it’s reminded me to wear mine a tad more. They are such fabulous little pieces of sparkle,

Thank you, Jodie! I love that Grace chose brooches for this month, too, because I always forget about brooches as well! I need to wear mine more often and have been making more attempts lately. I have realized that I actually hate bracelets and rings and so I stopped wearing them for the most part. I always love the look of piles of bracelets and funky rings on every finger. But I simply cannot tolerate the way they feel. I feel confined or something and it’s unbearable! This leaves necklaces and earrings as my entire jewelry game…so I need to incorporate more brooches for variety, too!

I’m so glad that pins and brooches are making a comeback. I have several that I inherited from my mom, and I need to start wearing them more often. I love your idea to put a brooch on your knit hat. The combination of blue green colors in the outfit look great.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thank you so much, Carol! Heirloom brooches are the best kinds! My most special brooch was the one my mother wore on her wedding day which I inherited and wore on my wedding day. I also have two gorgeous butterfly brooches that my mother-in-law gave to me for Mother’s Day a few years ago. They had belonged to her mother who I was very close with. So those are super special ones, too!

What a clever idea to put Mr. Owl on your pocket! I have a small collection of brooches. I need to put them somewhere so I remember I have them. I love the idea of putting bunches on a jacket, but I just don’t feel like I can pull the look off! I’ll have to give it another try!
Although those puffer coats aren’t really that cute, they are so doggone warm! I love mine and can’t believe I only bought one a couple of years ago!

Thanks so much, Marsha! I thought Mr. Owl looked clever on my pocket, too! I look forward to seeing how you try some unique brooch styling tricks. And I hear you on the puffer coats. I always thought they were rather unflattering and, I’ll just say it, ugly, but they are warmer than any other coat I have ever owned! And I do feel kind of cute all bundled up with the giant fur trimmed hood!

I have a soft spot for brooches – love Mr Owl and your academia themed outfit. I’d never thought of wearing a brooch anywhere other than the lapel, so will definitely try it. Thanks for linking.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Gail! It’s fun to find unique ways to wear brooches. They are the one piece of jewelry that is not locked into to one specific purpose or placement like a necklace, earrings, bracelet, or ring. I look forward to seeing your new creative ways to style brooches! Have a great day.

Love this pretty outfit, Shelbee! I’ve acquired a few brooches over the years from family members, so they’re sentimental to me, though I don’t wear them.
Hope all is well with you friend, and I hope you have an amazing upcoming weekend! 🙂

Ashley, thanks so much, my friend! Sentimental heirloom brooches are some of the best pieces you can own! I have a few myself and they are my favorites to wear. I have a daisy pin that my mother wore on her wedding day and then I wore it on mine. And I have two butterfly brooches that belonged to my husband’s grandmother. My mother-in-law gifted them to me last Mother’s Day. You should show off your sentimental brooches! They are meant to be worn and seen and appreciated. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

How clever and creative of you to wear your brooches on your hat and down low on a pocket, Shelbee. The whole look is fabulous and I especially like your new puffer.

I just LOVE your outfit. That skirt is a great find and I am really thinking I need to find some mary janes for myself. Great touches with the broaches.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thank you, Joanne! I have loved chunky Mary Jane shoes since high school and have always had a pair or two on rotation in my wardrobe for the last 30 years. There are so many cute options out there now, too. Let me know if you do end up getting a pair!

Patrick Weseman
Very nice. Love the outfit and love you did the pins and brooches or are they the same thing.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Patrick! I think all brooches are pins but not all pins are brooches…that kind of thing…brooches belong to the broader category of pins. I just did a quick thesaurus check and neither word appears as a synonym for the other. That seems kind of weird to me. Maybe I will investigate further!

This is one of my favorite outfits yet. And I love the ideas for brooches. I only have a couple but I never wear them. Maybe I’ll change that now!

Grace
Oh Shelbee, I love this outfit!! I’ve never thought to wear a brooch lower down on a jacket but I absolutely love what you did with the owl. I’ll have to make a mental note to do that next time. And the one on your hat is super cute as well!

Grace, thank you so much! I do like the pin on the pocket trick! I have worn brooches on pockets a few times before but I think this might be the first time I ever photographed it. I put them on my hats all the time which is one of my favorite ways to wear them. This was such a fun style challenge! I hope you are having a magnificent time abroad, my friend!

Fab – I recently rediscovered some brooches – I don’t wear them, but couldn’t get rid of them. Thanks for sharing with #PoCoLo

Thanks, Stephanie! There are so many things you could do with your brooches if you don’t want to wear them. You could find some creative way to display them, I bet!
