The Magnificent 8 Are Distressed
I don’t know if you remember back in July when I introduced a new quarterly collaboration with 7 amazing blogger friends who each represents a different decade of life…The Magnificent 8 Showcase: Life’s a Beach. We range from teens to 80’s and are showing that style truly is ageless. Each quarter, we choose a theme and each create an outfit that suits our own personal tastes and fashion choices and we post them on the last Wednesday of every third month. So be sure to go check out everyone’s posts for lots of style inspiration at any age!
Courtney of Sugar Coated Bears is representing teenagers.
Michelle of Michelle’s Pa(i)ge is representing the 20-somethings.
Roxanne of Glass of Glam is representing the 30-somethings.
Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge is representing the 40-somethings.
Rena of Fine Whatever is representing the 50-somethings.
Cathe of Atypical 60 is representing the 60-somethings.
Nancy of Jodie’s Touch of Style is representing the 70-somethings.
And Charlotte of Jodie’s Touch of Style is representing the 80-somethings.
We are showing that you can’t put a number on style!
For this quarter, we have chosen a Distressed theme. And while this theme was picked months ago, it didn’t hit me until I sat to draft this post just how timely and ironic this theme would be. I am featuring yet another pair of distressed jeans (I wear ripped denim quite often). But it’s not just my denim that is distressed right now. Folks, I am distressed! Man, it has been a hell of a week. But these shoulders of mine are strong and they can carry a lot. A lot more than I ever thought they could. And I don’t mean to be cryptic here, but I want to draft a well-thought out post for you just to let you know why I am so distressed this week. So please stay tuned for that. It is a topic of great importance to me and one that needs sharing…again. So distressed or not, I will continue doing the work that I am called to do.
In light of the crazy week from hell that I am only just half way through, I am tired, my friends. Ever so tired. But I am pushing through like a champion, like a survivor, like a magical unicorn with unstoppable powers. (Man, if I only had such powers.) So don’t let appearances deceive you. I just photographed this outfit yesterday, all smiles and giggles with a grieving husband on the other side of the camera. Because he is a freaking rock, a survivor, a champion, unaware of his own strength. You see, he and I, we dance this perfect dance, beautiful in its brokenness as we trip and fall over our own feet only to gracefully catch one another on the way down. I know, cryptic, again. But I will give you more in a few days when I have time to catch my breath and gather my thoughts. We are all in tact, as we always are, but it’s not without determination, dedication, patience, commitment, and a whole lot of love. Selfless, giving, unwavering love in its truest, rawest, realest form.
So distressed I may be, just like my jeans and the wonderful stylings of my magnificent friends, but I am whole and healthy. So I do not want to cause any concern for me because none is warranted. In fact, I beg of you to not worry about a thing…I am better, stronger, braver, clearer than I have ever been. And on that note, let me briefly talk about my outfit…that is, after all, the entire point of this style collaboration.
I was totally unprepared for this theme and literally threw together this outfit yesterday morning for a photo shoot. I had no time for creativity or planning so I worked with what I had. I completely shopped my closet with only one recently purchased item topping it off…this adorable leopard beret from Charlotte Russe. It is only $7.99 (with my employee discount, I paid less than $5) and it is so soft and cozy. The moment I laid eyes upon it, I had to make it mine! And the rest of my outfit is mostly thrifted or gifted. The details are below…
Outfit Details
Trench Coat: Talbots (Thrifted from Salvation Army).
Velvet Blazer: Thrifted so many years ago that I cannot even remember where I got it.
Jeans: Vigoss from Maurice’s.
Crew Neck Sweater: c/o Chico’s.
Necklace: c/o Chico’s.
Earrings: c/o Happiness Boutique.
Gloves: Army Issued Fire-Retardant Trigger Gloves: Gifted (maybe stolen) from my husband.
Fishnet Tights: Target.
Leopard Belt: TJ Maxx.
Shoes: Target.
Hat: Charlotte Russe.
Leopard Clutch: Maurice’s (Purchased from Solitary Consignment).
Now be sure to go check out all of the other distressed outfits! And you even get an extra outfit from Jodie as she will be sharing her own distressed look along side of Nancy and Charlotte!
Enjoy all of the looks and do let me know if you love or hate the distressed trend! Also, we are open to suggestions for themes that you might like to see styled in January. Let us know in the comments!
Keeping it on the edge,
Shelbee

Shelbee you look great in everything! That beret is great on you.
Sorry this week has been so trying and I hope you and your husband get some relief soon. I understand – even though I don’t know what y’all are going through. My father is dying – even as I type this my eyes are welling up and I go through each day with a lump in my throat, tears at the ready and a heart ready to explode from the weight of the grief I already feel. Going on with the daily events of life feels so ridiculous sometimes but go forth I must.
Love to you sweet friend!

Thank you so much, Kellyann. And I am sending so much love right back to you, my friend. I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this. Watching a parent fade away is the hardest thing ever. I understand what you are going through, having sat beside both of my parents as they left this world. Dealing with any loss is difficult, yet we are forced to do it all too often in this life. But going forward is the only direction we can go. The only way to get to the other side of grief is straight on through it, there’s no avoiding it or circumventing it. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

So sorry this has been such a terrible week for you, Shelbee. But I just have to say you look beautiful in these photos. And you and Jodie are really inspiring me to do more thrifting. Great clothes!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Cathy! I am just fumbling and stumbling forward this week…but still moving forward, so that’s good! Ha. I am really loving finding second hand items. It is so much fun! I have a really great thrifted piece to share soon. I think you are all going to love it!

Jodie, thank you so much for your kind and supportive words, my friend. Yeah, feeling distressed is not the best feeling ever, but it certainly could be worse. So keep perspective I must! This too shall pass. I’m just really tired! Ha. I am so glad that I could give you a little nudge outside of your comfort zone. The result is pure fabulousness!

OMG THAT JACKET!!!!! IS IT VELVET??? I WANTS IT!
When I saw that jacket, I screamed, Gollum-like, My Precious!
It is awesome! Is it velvet? Is it black or brown? I don’t care, it’s fabulous and I need it. Ditto the hat.
You look wonderful Shelbee, and no one does distressed denim like you do. Except maybe me, but I don’t have a photographer, and suck at selfies. And why, oh Why can’t I find a velvet jacket?
My precious…
Imma skulk off to my cave now, and sulk.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Susan, thank you! Yes, it is velvet and it is black. I actually have 2 black velvet jackets and one burgundy velvet jacket. This is the one that fits the best, the other two are a tad tight in the shoulders. But I will still wear them. I do love my velvet jackets and have been wanting one in a more vibrant color. I will be on the lookout for such a thing and let you know when I find it!

I hope you’re feeling alright! I’m distressed too – mostly about the state of America right now. Saturday took a toll on me. I’ll be writing more about it on Friday, too. Just so you know, you’re not alone!
I do love this outfit – the fun tights under the distressed denim is genius! Stealing this look!

Thanks so much, Nancy! My hair really has been growing like crazy, but I also only cut it about every 4 or 5 months! Perhaps all the menopausal hormones are helping it along, too. Ha.

What a great idea and I love the outfit. The velvet jacket is beautiful and you know I love a good pair of ripped up jeans. Sorry to hear you’re going through something. I’ll check back later in the week for the post. Hang in there.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Julie, thank you so much! I have a few velvet blazers…all thrifted…and I need to wear them more often, I think. They are so great! I may not even have time to post anything of substance until next week at this point, but my brain is currently processing out what I want to write. But please do check back.

First up, I don’t really do distressed but you do look fabulous. I adore your beret, it looks so soft and comfy. I will go and check Jodie’s post, I’m interested how her family does distressed. (Plus I’m a bit of an older lady, but it’s just a number eh!)
Secondly, I don’t know what you are going to but I’m glad you standing strong through your distress and I wish you all the very best and hope that things improve very soon x
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Anne, thank you so very much for this kind comment! And I agree that age is just a number, but I think you will love what Jodie, Nancy, and Charlotte have done with a distressed theme! I hope you find lots of inspiration from them. They are brilliant! And the fog of distress has definitely lifted now and it appears to smooth sailing…for now…heading into the holiday chaos!

I’m of that age where I look at ripped denim and wonder why it costs more than a normal pair of jeans, however as a teen and in my early 20’s in the 1980’s I used to spend hours with a nail file, creating the frayed look on the knees #blogcrush
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for sharing this with me! And that is why ripped denim costs more, I think, because there are people using nail files to get the perfect distressing! Ha. I’m kidding, of course, but that is just so fantastic of a story that I couldn’t resist!

I always love love the creative and genius way you write and how you compared your distressed jeans to your state of mind or bad week you were having which I hope is long gone by now. I am not sure if I like distressed or regular jeans more but I know that I do not love too much distressing. Yours are perfect and edgy enough. The outfit you created is very you which is always a compliment but with elements of edgy, trendy, retro, 80s and current as well. Love, love all the pops of leopard and you will notice a similar item when I share my Thanksgiving Outfit, Shelbee. As a matter of fact I am about to e-mail it to you now.
And girl I did not know you worked at Charlotte Russe. We need a facetime video chat soon, with the kiddos too. I need a fun little leopard clutch in my closet. Does Charlotte have any?!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Ada, thanks so much! These topics for writing seriously just pop into my head at the last minute. I cannot plan my writing, but when the muse starts singing, I run to the keyboard! Ha. Oh I am excited to see your Thanksgiving outfit. Charlotte Russe does have a cute little leopard clutch that I have been eyeing up myself! I will have to find the link for it. And Torrid has a camo clutch that I am dying to have as well!
Yes, we definitely need a face time chat soon. We are heading to Pennsylvania this weekend for a wedding (I will doing photos for our holiday wedding post then) and the kids and husband are staying there until after Thanksgiving. I have to work all the Black Friday craziness so I will be heading home after the wedding. But definitely once they all get back home after Thanksgiving, let’s plan a chat!

I’m happy that I can wear my worn out jeans and call it a ’distressed’ outfit, even though I’d really prefer some new clothes. You look happy and comfortable in this outfit, and I think that often is what makes an outfit work, that it fits the wearer of it both in style and personality x #BlogCrush
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Malin, thank you so very much! I agree with you completely that if the wearer adds a smile and a dose of confidence, just about any outfit will work!
