The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book: Tartan

Welcome to December’s Good Buy/Good-Bye Book featuring all things Tartan (or plaid, checked, checkered, etc.) I have always loved plaids and tartans. It is one of my favorite pattern types because you can find it in countless different color combinations, sizes, and fabrics. Not only do I adore tartan clothing, I also love plaid in home decor items. But it doesn’t appear much in my home because, no matter how much I adore plaid, my husband absolutely despises it. He attributes his distaste for the pattern to having been “forced to wear plaid shirts as a child”. I guess he probably already hated plaid back then since he had to be “forced” to wear it in the first place. Plaid and pink are the two things he has politely “forbidden” as dominant decor themes in our home. It cracks me up.

The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book is a monthly series hosted by Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style and myself. Every month, we invite you to share a photo or two of your Good (or Bad) Buy items that fit the stated theme. We ask that you also provide a short description explaining if the item you are sharing was a Good Buy or one that you will be saying Good-Bye to (formerly known as Bad Buys). Nancy and I will both publish a round up post featuring all of the submissions on the 15th of each month.

Anyone who would like to participate and be featured can send us their photos with a short description via email. You do not have to be a blogger to join. Anyone is welcome! We will give you the theme for the next month at the conclusion of each post. Photos will be due to us by the 10th of the month.

If you sent me a photo, but do not see it in my post, be sure to check Nancy’s post. If you don’t see your photo in either post, please let us know right away and we will add it. Sometimes the submissions get lost in the shuffle.

“Oh how I loved this look! So punky! I wore the tartan skirt over a tulle one for more volume. Patent boots are a must if you want to create a throw back to the 80’s look. I associate tartan with that era, and loved it. The music, dressed in black all the time, what a time. This skirt was a Good Buy!”

“This outfit is a wintery look, featuring a long, super full wool skirt in a  plaid of taupe, ivory and black. I would consider this skirt a good buy since it is warm and toasty and the neural colors of the tartan are so versatile, it can be styled with nearly any color.”

“I received this coat in one of my Stitch Fix boxes a couple of years ago and I nearly returned it thinking I didn’t need another coat. But I am so glad I kept it as it has become one of my favorites. The black on gray pattern, the belt, and the asymmetrical zipper/closure are all such fun little details that none of my other coats have. Paired with my black pants and black boots, this coat has been such a good buy!”

“This plaid skirt was originally a kilt handed down to me by my friend. My mom took out all of the pleats and created an asymmetrical skirt which I consider a good buy (even though I didn’t buy it per se). I’ve had it for over 15 years (or more) and love how it works for any season.”

“This is a Ralph Lauren Polo sequined dress that I bought on consignment in Vancouver a few years ago, new-with-tags. I love wearing it and enjoying the compliments from people who enjoy the shimmer of the sequins. It’s definitely been a Good Buy!”

Ralph of Shelbee on the Edge
“Back when Ralph wanted to be a boy fashion blogger, he enjoyed shopping for his blog outfits at a local kids’ consignment shop. He scored this adorable plaid top, seersucker blazer, and black canvas sneakers on a trade in for his outgrown clothes. He only wore the shirt a few times but it was still a Good Buy because it was free. When he was done with it, we sent it right back to the same store for the next kid looking for a secondhand plaid shirt.”

And Me…with a Good Buy
“I almost didn’t buy this coat because I have too many coats already. But it was on super duper clearance for $20 making it impossible to resist. I am really glad I indulged this frivolous purchase because it has become one of my favorite statement winter coats. A very good buy, indeed.”

…and a Good-Bye
“When I wore this dress for the first time, my only complaint was that the frayed edges kept shedding and I was pulling long strings off of my dress throughout the day. I had high hopes that it would eventually stop fraying and shedding but I soon realized that it is just a terribly uncomfortable garment so I said Good-Bye to it.”
