The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book: Pre-Loved Items & Link Up On the Edge #195

Welcome to The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book!

Welcome! This is The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book. A series co-hosted with Nancy where you can choose whether you want to share a Good Buy (which is an item you are really exited about) or a Good-Bye (which is an item you are going to say good-bye to, previously known as a Bad Buy). Every month you can choose which item you want to submit. A Good Buy or a Good-Bye. We will provide the theme for each month. Photos should be submitted to us by the 10th of the month with a few sentences explaining why it is a Good Buy or Good-Bye.

As we have all been sitting around in quarantine mode these past few months and have taken to shopping our closets, Nancy and I decided to feature our favorite (or least favorite) Pre-Loved Items this month. Thrift shopping has been a passion of mine since I was in high school when I discovered how much fun it is to find treasure amongst the discarded items of others. Fast forward to today and I still love the hunt for unique second hand pieces. But in addition to that, shopping second hand is so much better for the environment so it also appeals to my environmentally conscious heart. So without further hesitation, let’s get started with this month’s featured Pre-Loved Items.

First is my lovely co-host Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style sharing one of her favorite pre-loved dresses.

Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style

“I love Diane von Furstenberg dresses. But they are to expensive for me to buy new ones. I have two pre-loved dresses and two blouses from her hand, but this is my favorite dress! Love, love, love the two same prints but different!”

Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style

Next is our ever faithful contributor, Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style, with two fabulous pre-loved tunics.

Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style

“I have SO many items from secondhand stores. That’s exactly why I’m one of the co-hosts for the #thriftedchicstylechallenge on Instagram. Our next one is June 1-3 if anyone is interested (and there is always a prize).

“It’s hard to pick a favorite pre-loved item. Yet this lime green lightweight tunic was such an interesting find. I think it’s handmade because there is no label and it looks handmade from the inside.”

“This green tunic was purchased about a year ago, and I love wearing it with leggings.”

Now the amazing and unique Anne of Spy Girl wearing pre-loved items from head to toe!

Anne of Spy Girl

“Shirt, Skirt, Clogs all used, all good!”

Next up is gorgeous Laura of I do deClaire who is joining us for the first time this month (yay!) with her pre-loved moto jacket.

Laura of I do deClaire

“My thrifted leather jacket.”

The beautiful Michelle of My Bijou Life is back with us this month sharing one her favorite pre-loved tops.

Michelle of My Bijou Life

“This white and black top is a pre-loved purchase from Poshmark. It was a good buy! The top fits well, hangs nicely, and I love the design. It reminds me of paisley, and I’ve never met a paisley I didn’t like. (The belt did not come with the top.) I included two pictures in order to provide a close up of the design in the top, but don’t feel obligated to use them both.”

Next up is Kellyann of This Blonde’s Shopping Bag looking radiant in a gorgeous pre-loved white sundress.

Kellyann of This Blonde’s Shopping Bag

”My H&M Sundress is a dress I love wearing, it’s a little sheer but I love it!”

The fabulous Rena of Fine Whatever is joining us again this month also dressed head to toe in pre-loved items!

Rena of Fine Whatever

“It would be hard for me to select just one pre-loved garment to feature so instead I’ve got a head-to-toe ensemble made up from some of my favorite finds. The boots were bought at a consignment store and the sweater, top, and patched-up pants were purchased at thrift stores.”

Rena of Fine Whatever

Now we have the lovely Ellie of Ellibelle’s Corner with a few pre-loved items as well.

Ellie of Ellibelle’s Corner

“”The turquoise sweater was a hand-me-down from my sister. While I normally feel constricted when wearing turtlenecks, this one is made of a soft knit and not too tight, so it’s become one of my favorites to wear when I don’t want to add a scarf. And I Iove a pretty turquoise on a chilly day. It was definitely a Good Buy (even though I got this one for free from my dear sister.)

“The handbag was a Goodwill find for less than $6. While I usually reach for a crossbody bag, I love having a structured bag in my closet as well. The neutral color of this bag goes with just about anything in my closet and why pay $$ for something I don’t use as much but still love to have in my closet?! It was another Good Buy!”

Ellie of Ellibelle’s Corner

Next up is thrifting expert, Michele of seechele_styles, with a few of her favorite pre-loved items.

Michele of seechele_styles

“Good buy polka dot bag is thrifted and the black tunic top is preloved, too.”

Michele of seechele_styles

The gorgeous Liz of Closet Play Image is back with us this month with her favorite pre-loved necklace.

Liz of Closet Play Image

“My favorite would probably be the necklace Mr. CP bought me last year for Mother’s Day. I fell in love with it on a trip to Arizona. It haunted me all the way home. When we called, they were kind enough to ship it across the country. I love all the colors of the beads, and that it’s multicolored but not overwhelming! I wear it with jeans and tees and with suits. It was definitely a good buy!”

Liz of Closet Play Image

Now we have the marvelous Mireille of Chez Mireille with one of her favorite pre-loved skirts.

Mireille of Chez Mireille

“I was thinking that my thrifted finds either are awesome finds and I wear them for years or I donate them back after a few wears.

There are several skirts that I have thrifted that are keepers. This cute printed pencil skirt is a favorite: I love the style and the colors and it is here to stay. It is also a good remember to try things that are not your usual size: they may surprise you and fit!”

Mireille of Chez Mireille

Next is Radical Ralphie, my favorite boy blogger, with a few pre-loved outfits.

Radical Ralphie

“This amazing bomber jacket was pre-loved by Mireille’s son and then gifted to Ralphie to be featured on his blog appearances. It quickly became one of his favorite jackets. I just hope he doesn’t outgrow it too soon.”

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, Radical Ralphie’s mother
Radical Ralphie

“Ralphie is dressed head to toe in pre-loved items. His blazer, shirt, and sneakers were purchased at our local kids’ consignment shop and his tee shirt and jeans were handed down from his brother, Awesome Archie.”

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge

And finally, one of my favorite pre-loved items. It was super difficult for me to choose which pre-loved item to feature. I have so many and they are incorporated into nearly every outfit I wear. I do love a good thrift shop find!

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge

“The red satin maxi skirt was a consignment shop find last winter. At first as I was unsure if I would wear it, but something was so appealing to me about it so I bought it. It turns out that I do wear it quite often. It is great with a graphic tee and sneakers or with a sweater and boots.”

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge

Thanks so much to everyone who joined us this month! This was a really fun theme and I love all of the wonderful pre-loved items that you all shared!

And now hop on over to Nancy’s post to see some more Pre-loved Items styled by some very thrifty fashionistas!

The theme for June will be Formal Wear. So dig out those pictures from past fancy events or get dressed up in your favorite gown and take some new photos. Remember to include a brief description of your formal photos letting us know if you are featuring a Good Buy or Good-Bye.

Please submit your photos and descriptions by the 10th of June to shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com or to nancy@nancysfashionstyle.com so we can put you in the spotlight!

*By joining The Good Buy/Good-Bye Book, you agree to receive a monthly reminder email for this series.

Before I sign off, we do have the business of featured favorites and a link party to get to as well. Here we go…

Reader Favorite (Most Clicked)

Brenda of Ruby Hem Ministries shared a powerful and moving post, My Therapist’s Challenge. She discusses the process of undoing a lot of the messages that we allow our minds to perpetuate throughout our lives. Sometimes our own narrative needs a little rewriting and Brenda is taking the necessary steps to do that for herself. We could all learn some important wisdom here. If you have not yet read her post, I highly recommend it!

My Favorite Fashion Post

Katie of Hello Katie Girl gets me every time with her bright colors and vibrant backgrounds. She has done it once again with her post, Back with Marimekko.

My Favorite Non-Fashion Post

Katie of Preppy Empty Nester had me laughing from start to finish with her post, Love in the Time of Corona. As much as we love and adore our spouses and significant others, being locked down together 24/7 for 8 long weeks is bound to take a toll on even the sturdiest unions. Seriously, you must read this post if not for any other reason than that laughter is the best medicine (and you probably will relate to at least one or two of her “complaints”).

    Hello!
I always enjoy reading blog posts from other countries. It is so nice how women support each other and present them on their blogs. This is not possible in Germany. I have had done it more often when I started blogging. I think that’s a nice way to network. But, as I said, not possible in Germany with german woman. I am very pleased that you are presenting such magical ladies on your blog.
Hope to see you on my blog.
    XO Martina from Munich/Germany

Martina, thanks so much for stopping by and for your thoughtful comment. I am so sorry to hear that women in your part of the world are not as supportive. My co-host Nancy who is from the Netherlands has said the same of her country which is why we joined forces to host this series where we include any and all women who wish to join us. It is a lot of fun and a great way to network and support each other. I love this little blogging community! I hope you stop by again and join my link parties or any of these fun collaborations. Have a wonderful weekend!

This was a great theme, Nancy! So many fabulous pre-loved pieces. I had found a few more submissions in my email at the last minute, so I just added them to my post. I will be over to check out your post soon! Have a great weekend, my friend.

I actually made my formal wear back in high school– my mom helped me sew all of my prom dresses and I loved knowing that without a doubt I’d have something original to wear. We toyed with designing and making my wedding dress too but ended up buying it in the end when she kept tearing up every time I tried on this one particular dress.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

That is so great, Joanne! I designed my own prom dress as well and my mother made it for me because I don’t know how to sew. But I gave her the idea of what I wanted and she did an amazing job on it. It was a short green sequined dress and the back looked like a peace sign. She also made a matching cummerbund and bow tie for my date. I wish I still had them but I think they were lost moving to different places over the years. Oh well. In any event, if you have photos of some of your favorite formal wear including your wedding gown, we would love for you to join us next month! I hope you have a lovely weekend.

Hi Eva! Thanks so much for stopping by! It is so nice to meet a fellow thrifter. This blogging community is filled with so many wonderful ladies who have an eye for second hand shopping as well as a heart for doing what we can to minimize the damage to our planet. I hope you will join us one of these months! And regardless of the theme we choose, you can always submit a thrifted item. Have a wonderful weekend!

shelbee, i would love to be included on the good buy good bye list! i just joined Match Made in Seven with Nancy! I;m the first upcycler to join the group…all i do is wear thrifted clothes…i’ve been doing it since i was 16 and now i am 48…my focus is turning otherwise dated items into current pinterest styles….like puffy sleeves, or cropped flare denim, or a copy cat anthropologie dress…can;t wait until you see what i did for MMI7 this month!

        • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

I love that, Eva! Actually, Nancy and I have been tossing around ideas for a new collaboration of some sort and I just emailed her about doing one that focuses entirely on pre-loved fashions. If we go that route, maybe you would like to be part of that collaboration as well! We will keep you posted!

Love all of the fun thrifted styles featured here! I am always amazed at the things people find used and since we have some amazing thrift stores here in Los Angeles, thrifting is something I would definitely like to get into more! Thanks for featuring me in this post!

I love thrifting so much! I wish I had time to do it more often. I just bought my daughters Lilly Pulitzer dresses off of ebay for about $15 each! I very rarely buy designer for full price! There is too much goodness to be had second-hand! Your red skirt is fabulous! I can see why you like it so much!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Laura, I am so glad that you joined us this month! I love thrifting so much, too. I am looking forward to being able to go hunting once the stores are open again. That is great that you found LP dresses on ebay. What a great price, too. I love that there has been a dramatic shift and focus on second hand shopping. Have a great weekend!

Wow, such amazing finds by all these awesome ladies! I have to make an effort to find some cool pieces after this crazy time! Or maybe from Poshmark? Hmm. Love you Boheme look with the red satin skirt! And Ralphie looks adorable in everything!

    xx Darlene

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Darlene! I am looking forward to visiting the thrift shops once they are open again to look for some more cool pieces. Definitely check out Poshmark in the meantime! I hope your weekend is going well.

I just love this series and I sure wish I had the time I need to participate in them :/ A dozen pieces were going through my mind while I was looking at what everybody else was styling (even a few that I later decided I didn’t really like and a pair of shoes that fell apart on me the first time I wore them, which was months after I bought them). Everybody has such wonderful pieces they’ve picked up – guess I need to head to ThredUp again and see what they have available. I love your red skirt and I’ve been dying to style a skirt with a graphic Tee. I may have to try it with my mulberry midi slip skirt….. And Ralphie is so handsome in both of his outfits. Does he actually style them himself?

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Ruth! This is such a fun series. I love seeing what everyone submits to us each month. One day it will all fall into place and you will have photos already done for the stated theme! We are also thinking of starting a new series focused on pre-loved items. Details to come soon. As for Ralphie…sometimes he styles the whole outfit himself, but sometimes I help him, too.
