Summer Wedding Outfit & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up #283
My best goddess girlfriend invited me to be her plus one at a wedding on Sunday afternoon. Two of her beautiful goddess friends were finally getting married after a two year postponement due to Covid. In the course of those two years, the brides had moved to Texas but their wedding in New York was already paid for so the show had to go on despite the fact that about a third of their invited wedding guests could not make it to the ceremony two years later.
They had seats to fill and too much food that would be wasted so I got a last minute invitation that I was more than happy to accept. Because I love love and I love to celebrate love. And my best goddess girlfriend also needed someone to sit with her kids since she was a member of the wedding party. Her mother came along as well and we had the best time, tiring as it may have been chasing the two little people around. Her 4 year old ended the night with a vomitous bang after shoving may too many sweets and things into his hungry little mouth! He ended up going home an hour early with his Oma all wrapped up in the scarf that I had tied on my bag.
This is one of the primary reasons that I generally have a giant scarf incorporated into my outfit…you never know when you might need it or what you might need it for. I have used my scarves to clean my children, to keep them warm, to sit on the ground, and to provide coverage and protection from the rain or the sun. They are easy enough to tie on your purse strap or simply fold one up and toss it in your bag if you don’t feel like wearing it.
I didn’t decide what I was going to wear until about two hours before it was time to leave for the wedding. I knew I wanted to wear something cheerful and bright but had a few different sundresses in mind before settling on this bright turquoise one paired with a vibrant kimono. The wedding and reception were held at the beautiful Harbor Hotel which is situated on the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Clayton, New York. The black fence behind me surrounds the hotel grounds. It is about a 40 minute drive on back roads from my house and I am a terrible nighttime driver so Jeff and the boys dropped me off since my date had to be there early. We got there a little early as well so we had time to take some photos and enjoy the gorgeous river view for a bit.
My hair was curly when I left the house but the curls apparently went flying away with the wind along the river. And my dress was steamed and wrinkle free when I left the house but apparently I picked up a whole village of creases in the car. But I think the colorfulness of my outfit created enough distraction from my limp hair and crinkled dress. It doesn’t much matter if it did though because it was a spectacular day for celebrating love!
And now I will leave you with my favorite scripture from the Bible. And while I am not a Christian, I do live by these words every single day of my life. Because love is my religion.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-13
May we all learn the value of love in its unconditional form.

That’s a special guiding scripture for me, too, Shelbee. And I am also learning never to leave home without a scarf or shawl!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Ahhh, that is so fantastic, Michele! It is such a beautiful scripture. I have learned unconditional love and it is an extraordinary way to live! I just wish so many more people could make their way here. Now we both need scarves or shawls with our favorite guiding words on them! Haha.

Shelbee,
This is a great look for an afternoon wedding. And how brilliant of you to have figured out a way to be ready at a moment’s notice to attend to many of the unexpected needs of children. Perhaps that could be the subject of a blog post?

Thanks so much, Rena! I never thought of that as a possible post topic…how to be prepared for child mishaps in the most fashionable way possible! Hahaha. That’s fantastic! I need to come up with a few other ideas though first!

I am so glad your goddess’ friends were finally able to marry. I cannot imagine the stress they must have been dealing with…covid, moving, planning a wedding…eeek! You look so beautifully carefree in this look, Shelbee! I love the layers and the colors and the accessories…major win!!! Love is indeed a wonderful thing when it is celebrated with loved and loving people around! And, that is one of my favorite scriptures, too…love is the greatest of them!
Thanks for the feature and the link party!

How nice that you got to be a plus one and that those brides finally had their wedding! Oh my goodness, having to wait two years, what a drag.
You look absolutely radiant in this ensemble and that turquoise dress is such a good color on you. So sweet to have those young men of yours join you too!

Thanks so much, Kellyann! I felt pretty fabulous in this outfit! Isn’t it so terrible they had to wait so long? But the ceremony ended up being so beautiful and so emotional due in part to significant events that happened for both brides during those two years. I cried at least 14 times throughout the night!

That is such a beautiful blue dress on you adn I really like the bright combo of the kimono with it! How nice you were able to enjoy the wedding!
Thanks for the link up! Hope you are having a good week 🙂
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Mica! I was a little nervous about attending a wedding where I only knew one person but I ended up having a really great time! Oh my goodness, I just had a silly memory…the last time I attended a wedding where I only knew one person, I ended up divorced! Hahaha. It’s very a long and funny story so I’ll spare the details. They probably aren’t suitable for public consumption anyway!

Lovely dress Shelbee. How magnificent you make the humble scarf sound. I love how you appreciate love. Too much cynicism about it these days!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thank you so much, Gail. I really appreciate this comment. There is too much cynicism about everything these days, it seems. No one wants to just let people live their best lives. It makes me sad.

Shelbee, I love that passsage of Scripture, too. I think verses 4-7, especially, are a good self-check to see how well I’m loving others. But the more I read them, the more I know I need God’s help to do them anywhere close to well.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thank you so much, Donna! This has been my scripture for as long as I can remember and it is a constant reminder to myself to lean in on unconditional love. The more love, the more we are able to accept love, and then we can give even more love to the world. It is what we are meant to do!
