Styling My New Tomahawk Shades & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up #193
I am a girl who wears glasses. All day. Every day. Complete with prescription lenses that also include a bifocal. Because my eyes are as old as me, they need a lot of help to do regular things these days. Like reading, watching television, working on my laptop, driving, and well, seeing. I have had poor vision since I was 8 years old donning the ugliest 1980’s eyeglass styles you can imagine. Today, at 46 years old, if I am not wearing my glasses, none of you even have a face from my perspective. You would all just be shapeless blurry blobs of faded colors.
With vision as poor as mine, my sunglasses also require prescription lenses. I don’t wear contacts. I tried contacts 25 years ago and never was comfortable with them and so I just stopped and embraced the funkier styles of prescription glasses as the years wore on. But prescription glasses are always expensive when your vision is as impaired as mine. My lenses start at $400 even at budget places like Walmart.
In any event, I am always a bit hesitant about collaborating with eyewear brands because it is difficult to style and shoot photos when you can’t really see. But with Tomahawk Shades, I was intrigued by the sleek cool styles and classic eyewear shapes they offer and so I jumped on board. Plus I have an appointment with the eye doctor next month and I am considering perhaps trying contacts again so I can up my sunglass game! Contacts are also convenient for activities like swimming which I rarely do anymore because I simply cannot see without corrective lenses.
*I am a Tomahawk Shades affiliate so any purchases made through my website will generate a small commission for me with no extra charge to you. For more details on affiliate programs, please visit my Disclosures page. The sunglasses were provided to me for purposes of this blog review. As always, all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
Tomahawk Shades sent me three pairs of sunglasses to try. I am styling two different pairs in this post, the Landfills and the Beholders. I will share the third pair, the Neuralyzers, next week.
The Landfills
Tomahawk Shades Landfills are a silver classic aviator frame with large smoky gray lenses that provide effective eye coverage and protection from harmful sun rays. They have a stainless steel frame and are super lightweight. The arms are equipped with internal spring hinges for ultimate comfort and the silver FDA approved impact resistance lenses feature Halcyon+ polarized protection.
Other classic aviator styles by Tomahawk Shades include the Stonewalls (black frame with a dark gray lenses) and the Afternoon Delight (silver frame with light blue lenses).
I have always loved aviator sunglasses but felt like they didn’t look right on me. Until I tried the Landfills. Now I think I really love this style on my face. What do you think?
The Beholders
The Beholders by Tomahawk Shades boast a minimalist style with a bold unique shape. The black metal frames have box external hinges for durability, rubber nose pieces for comfort, and tortoise ear stoppers for style. The smoke lenses are also FDA approved impact resistant lenses with Halcyon+ polarized protection.
Similar Tomahawk styles include the Copperheads (black frame with amber lenses), the Longshots (gold frame with smoke lenses), and the Gatekeepers (gold frames with bottle green lenses).
I really like the minimalist style and the unique shape of the Beholders frames, but I think they might be a tiny bit too small for my face. Or maybe I just prefer a bit more coverage from the sun. I do like these sunglasses though for a simple, clean style. What are your thoughts?
If you have been in the market for some new sunglasses, I encourage you to check out all of the different styles from Tomahawk Shades. I really like the lightweight materials they use which offer both comfort and durability in classic styles that will transcend trends. Be sure to use code Shelbee10 at checkout for an additional 10% off your purchase.
As for the rest of my outfit, I recently found this gorgeous red silk blazer on a recent thrift shopping trip. It was new with the tags on. I am not familiar with the brand but the retail tag said $98. I paid $6.99. And this adorable little velvet bag was $3 found on another recent thrift shopping trip. Everything else was shopped from my closet.
Which sunglasses do you like better, the Landfills or the Beholders?

Thanks so much, Kathrine! I have never had the opportunity to play around with different sunglass frames because I need prescriptions, so this is a ton of fun for me!

I love your new sunglasses! I became a glasses wearer in my 40’s and it’s been a tough transition. I went from perfect eyesight to needing progressives. I have been so pleased with the options that have become available in the last years. I’ll definitely give these a look next time I need a pair!
BTW – drooling over this outfit – love, love, love!

Kellyann, thanks so much! I can imagine that it is a difficult transition to wearing glasses. I have been wearing them for nearly 40 years so I can’t imagine life without them!

I love the first one on you, cool! Love your outfit too, what a fabulous boots! I wear glasses while my eyes don’t even need them! So I hate that because it’s not me. But I need them for my oxygen.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Nancy! I am really liking the aviator style on me and I didn’t think I would! I am so used to glasses after wearing them for nearly 30 years that I don’t even like my face without them! Haha. So I can see how you would feel odd wearing glasses when you don’t normally. But you do need your oxygen, my friend! So rock those glasses!

Hey Shelbee,
Great glasses and shades! Our six-year-old found the play-glasses in her dress-up clothing bin yesterday and was rocking them all morning. In Minnesota, our sun had vanished. We’re supposed to get 3-5 feet of snow today and are in a Winter storm watch—so there is no need to block the sun here. But, according to my six-year-old, glasses are son in right now 🙂
Thanks for hosting another fantastic link-up!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Jed, thanks so much for sharing that fun story! I absolutely need sunglasses when it snows! And I live in a place, like you, where 3-5 feet in a single storm is a normal occurrence. And when the snow covers everything, the white is blinding without sunglasses! So your 6 year old might be onto something! Stay warm and get your shovels ready!

Oh, I love your beautiful red jacket! I am itching to go thrifting, might do that this morning just to see what treasures someone might have dropped off! I am definitely having issues with really need readers with me because my contacts don’t correct that!

Thanks so much, Mireille! I have been escaping to the thrift shops when I want to get out and do something fun! We have some pretty decent ones here. And yes, needing readers with contacts is an annoyance! That’s why I do prefer glasses with bifocals. But I think I definitely want to give contacts another try.

These both look great on you but especially loving the minimalist style of the Beholders. Sunglasses are so important! I neglected wearing any for a long time because I’m short sighted and never invested in prescription sunglasses until the recent years …. just dealt with squinting my eyes using my regular glasses, which I now blame my forehead wrinkle on!!
I never tried contacts and probably never will (can’t imagine having a foreign object inside my eyes constantly), but at least I have one pair or prescription sunglasses now.
Ellibelle’s Corner
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Ellie! I cannot be without sunglasses because my eyes are such a light color. It ends up in a terrible headache if I go into the sun without sunglasses. I have always invested in prescription sunglasses as a result, but then I am limited to only one or two pairs because of the price of lenses. I hate contacts. I had a terrbile reaction to them which ended up in cornea damage many years ago. Once we resolved the problem and I could see properly again (it was two years of having a constant blind spot in my left eye, I decided I was done with contacts. But it has been decades so I might want to try again! So I totally understand your aversion to contacts! I am glad that you invested in prescription sunglasses.

My eyes are bad, too and now my reading vision is starting to go at 43! Boo! I do wear contacts, but I do have a pair of glasses I like to wear when I don’t have them in. You look so cute in this pair and wow, red is your color! That fun top is so cute with the chopsticks in your hair and those vibrant red boots!
Carrie
curlycraftymom.com
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Carrie! I am envious of people who never needed glasses before their 40’s! But I think statistically it is something like 99% of people over the age of 40 need some sort of corrective lenses. So basically, we are all doomed to troubled eyesight at some point in our lives. I guess I am a few steps ahead in the glasses game since I have been wearing them for 38 years!

Okay, I know this post is supposed to be focused on the sunglasses, but I couldn’t take my eyes off that jacket. Just stunning! What a score!
I understand about poor eyesight as I am right there with you. My problem is rather severe astigmatism. I’m neither a candidate for contacts or lasik. I’ve been purchasing my glasses through ZenniOptical. I’ve got bifocals at the moment, and need trifocals (or progressive lenses), but I’m not comfortable going to get my eyes checked while the pandemic rages on. So I’m stuck for the moment.
Anyway, both pairs of sunglasses look great on you! I like pair #1 just a smidge better, but you would not go wrong with either one.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Michelle! I am with you on my two pairs of glasses. I like them both well enough, but I like the aviators just a tiny bit more. I used to order from Zenni Optical many years ago but as my vision has worsened, they won’t fill my prescription. I have attempted orders with them since I have gotten a bifocal prescription and their system just tells me they are unable to fulfill my script. So I am forced to pay much more money for glasses. I long for the days when I could afford an extensive eyeglass wardrobe! And yes, isn’t this jacket such an amazing find?! I could not resist it although I had absolutely no need for it!

Cool shades, I like them both! The Landfills look like the actual glasses I wore in high school. Back then they simply called them photo gray but now they use the brand name Transitions. Thanks so much for hosting and for featuring my posts – IS IT MILK OR JUICE? and BE FEARLESSLY AUTHENTIC!!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Dee, thanks so much! I do like the retro vibe of the Landfills. I remember way back in my childhood, the choices in eyewear were limited and somewhat pitiful. I am so glad eyewear fashion as evolved! It was my pleasure to feature both of your posts! Have a wonderful day.

I like the Beholders if those are the second set of photos – the darker ones. I like your prescription glasses best and I love that Asian jacket/coat. It really pops and looks so good with your faded jeans. The backgrounds in the shots were also perfect. Thanks for hosting and all the best with your next eye appointment!
P.S. Hopefully, you’ll be able to find contacts that don’t bother you too much. I know that there’s an adjustment period. My grandfather was an optometrist and used to shape contact lenses for each individual eye for optimum comfort. He made them in those days.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Tina, thanks so much! I prefer my prescription glasses as well…and I can see out of them! Haha. I am actually surprised that the sunglasses look good on me having not tried them on before ordering. It is my bifocal right now that needs some serious adjustment! I hope I can find comfortable contacts as well. I don’t know if I will be able to tolerate them, but I am going to at least look into it. How wonderful that your grandfather custom made contacts for optimum comfort. I bet he was a much loved optometrist because of that! Thank you for sharing that story!

Looking so very nice in your specs. That is crazy that your lenses start at $400 and is that with insurance.
My daughter basically has coke bottles for lenses and with all the other stuff added on with frames and other bells and whistles (I bought her a new pair of glasses this summer) it was like $260 and I feel bad because my frames are free (I get the non-cool frames) but my lenses are like $130. I guess part of it is that I have good vision insurance.
Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Patrick! Yeah, Army vision insurance only covers exams for dependents. Zero coverage for glasses. Jeff’s glasses would be fully covered but he had Lasik many years ago. The rest of us need glasses! Ralph’s last pair from Walmart were around $130. Archie will be getting his first pair next month. And I need new ones as well. My lenses cost so much because they would also be massive coke bottles without the extra bells and whistles. Add in the bifocal and adjust for the astigmatism and I am up around $400 just for the lenses. Since I wear glasses during every waking moment, I also don’t compromise on the style. I look at it like I am paying for medication…it is a prescription after all. Take away my allergy medicine that is fully covered and I’ll be fine. Take away my glasses which are not covered at all and I cannot function. It’s a little backwards to me. But this is what happens to all things when the government gets involved! I hope you have a great day!

Love the Landfills aviator frame on you. Aviators are my favourite. The other style is nice but agree that bigger frames suit you better. I used to wear contacts all the time but since Covid have tended just to wear glasses. I need to set up an eye test before the threat of a second lockdown!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Gail! I definitely prefer a larger frame in both regular glasses and sunglasses. We all have eye appointments in the next few weeks and hopefully can get in before we have a second lock down as well. My poor 9 year old can’t see at all! He started complaining in March after the lock down began and has suffered since. I scheduled his appointment in July and the earliest they had was the end of October. Thankfully, he goes next week!
