About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Daenel of Living Outside the Stacks, Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, and Terri of MeadowTree Style. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms! Girl Embroidering, Seated in a Garden by Albert Marquet (Oil on Canvas, 1896)
About the Artist: Albert Marquet
Albert Marquet (March 27, 1875 – June 14, 1947) was a French painter, member of the Fauvist movement, and lifelong friend of Henri Matisse. He is known primarily for his landscape paintings done in a more naturalistic style, but also he has gained attention for several portraits and female nudes painted between 1910 and 1914.
He was born in Bordeaux in 1875 and moved to Paris in 1890 at the age of 15 to attend the École des Arts Décoratifs where he met Henri Matisse, six years his senior. They were roommates for a short time and influenced one another’s works. In 1892, Marquet began studies with Gustave Moreau who was a symbolist artist following in the Romantic tradition of Eugène Delacroix. During this time, Marquet had a few exhibitions but he didn’t sell very many paintings. However, he did become well known in the artistic community in Paris. By 1898, Marquet and Matisse were painting together in pure colors which subsequently became a defining element of the Fauve style. He responded to light in his works by intensifying the strongest tones while also seeing the weaker tones in terms of color.
Critics of a 1905 exhibition by Marquet and friends disliked the intense coloration in the paintings so much that they called the artists “fauves” meaning “wild beasts”. Although Marquet continued to paint with the Fauves for years, he used less violent colors and less intense tones than the other artists by mixing complementaries. Between 1907 and his death in 1947, Marquet traveled between his studio in Paris to European coastal cities as well as parts of North Africa where he painted sea and ship landscapes and paintings of animated city life.
He died in La Frette-sur-Seine on June 14, 1947, unexpectedly from a gall bladder attack that led to the discovery of cancer which had no available treatments at the time.
About the Art: Girl Embroidering, Seated in a Garden
Girl Embroidering, Seated in a Garden is an oil on canvas painted by Albert Marquet in 1896. It measures 49.6 cm (19.5 in) x 65 cm (25.5 in). The painting is part of a private collection.
It features an auburn haired woman in profile sitting on a wooden chair in a garden engaged in the act of embroidery. The young woman is wearing a bubble gum pink pinafore over a white blouse with her hair tied up in a loose bun. She is embroidering some type of textile in a brownish color with a red, green, and white design. The background is filled with the various shades of green abundant in a plush summer garden.

About My Outfit Inspired by Girl Embroidering, Seated in a Garden
As soon as I saw the inspiration painting for this challenge, I immediately thought of my St. Patrick’s Day outfit from 2020. I actually was going to just reuse the photos from that post this week if I didn’t find time to photograph something new. However, I did end up at the very last minute getting inspired so I could share something new rather than something old. But I liked the green floral with the bubbly shades of pink as a reflection of the colors in the painting so I stuck with similar elements but a little different for a completely new and unique outfit.
The green dress in the first outfit is long sleeved which is much better suited for this time of year, but I wanted a different dress and the only other dress that had the same vibrant green floral that I had my heart set on was this sleeveless sundress. This is when creative layering saves the day! I added my pink color blocked cardigan that was part of my Patriotic in Pink outfit this past Independence Day. And then I maybe went overboard with pink things and added pink tights, pink ankle boots, pink belt, pink beret, pink gloves, pink brooch, and pink floral necklace.
I wanted to incorporate something brown to represent the woman’s embroidery project so I wore this dark camel trench style coat. I picked this beauty up on Target clearance last year for $12. I really liked the contrast in the color between the coat and the soft bright shades of greens and pinks in the rest of my outfit. But I hate when my coat doesn’t cover the length of my cardigan! I would have gone coatless and just carried the thing as a prop, but as you can clearly see it’s snowing here and it’s really cold.
Despite our efforts driving around town to find a proper green background, we quickly discovered there isn’t too much green left in this arctic tundra that we call home. So you get the dark shades of evergreen in my background rather than the bright verdant of summer gardens. But that’s okay because it’s my interpretation! To see the other brilliant interpretations, visit Daenel’s post for the round up.

gotta love that cardigan! and kudos for wearing that shade of tights..As i would imagine this colour would widen any leg!

Thanks so much, Barbara! As long as you keep the visible leg line long, I don’t think the color really makes too much difference. But then again, my legs are my favorite physical quality so I don’t mind drawing attention to them!

Michelle,
Both of these are great outfits! But I am especially loving the shade of green in the sundress. And that pink colorblock sweater is perfect with it. Thanks once again for sharing the details of this artist’s life.

Oh, this was such a fun one, wasn’t it? I love your look so much! The dress I had planned to wear under my embroidered tee had a wonky collar so I couldn’t layer it. I love the addition of all of the different pinks. I hope you’ll check mine out…I think you’ll like it!

Another great jog imitating art. I really like all the pink overload; it makes the dress really pop and the colors look so spring-like it’s easy to ignore the snow in the photo (though you must have been freezing!).
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Joanne! I really liked the way the pink made the green appear even more vibrant! You know, it was cold but not all that cold when we shot these photos. It was in the 30’s which is actually not so bad around these parts in the wintertime. So I can tolerate 10-15 minutes in it to get photos done. Another month or two and I might be photographing indoors until spring though. Haha.

Hello, Shelbee-I running a bit late this week! You have color cordinated perfectly to the painting. I really like your color blocked cardigan and those pink blush booties. I think that color of pink is really my favorite. I see you have snow on the ground-a fortelling of what I’m doing for our next SIA!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Terri! I love the way this outfit came together. Pink and green is such a lovely cheerful combination to me! I am looking forward to your next SIA pick! All of the snow has melted here but maybe we will get some more for my photographs next week!

Love the green dress, great idea to wear summer clothing throughout the autumn. Thanks for linking with #pocolo

Thanks so much, Suzanne! I do like to layer unlikely pieces to give them versatility for more seasons. You can’t really wear winter clothes in the summer but you can make summer clothes work for winter if you get creative.
