“Still Life with Nuts, Candy and Flowers” by Clara Peeters | Style Imitating Art
Before I get going on the details of the next artwork chosen for Style Imitating Art, I want to apologize for skipping my Friday Link Up On the Edge post. We are just three weeks into the school year and my kids have already brought “the crud” home and then they generously shared it with me. I had one kid home sick for one day, the other was home for three days, and once I got them both back to school on Friday, the crud had managed to completely knock me on my ass. Head and chest congestion with muscle and joint pain as well as extreme lethargy has been my life since Thursday night. I slept more in two days than I generally sleep in two weeks, I think! I am feeling much improved now, although not 100% yet, but ready to get back to doing the things that I love to do. Don’t get me wrong, I do love to sleep, but not when it is forced upon me by illness. I hope you all are staying healthy as the school germs start circulating outside of the school and make their way into our homes.
Enough about germs and sickness, let’s talk about art and fashion instead!
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
This Week’s Presenter
Terri chose this week’s artwork, Still Life with Nuts, Candy and Flowers by 17th century artist Clara Peeters. Terri is interested in learning more about female artists who created during a time when art was a purely male-dominated field, which includes most art up until the 20th century. She picked this particular still life because she loves the rich, deep color palette as well as the gorgeous floral arrangement. And if you look closely, you might be able to see the artist’s multiple reflections painted into the dark grey pewter teapot.
The Artwork
“Still Life with Nuts, Candy and Flowers” by Clara Peeters
Here is a zoomed in image of the artist’s reflections in the teapot.
I also am drawn to the deep, dark, moody colors in this painting including the various metallics and the rich floral arrangement. It should come as no surprise that I think I might have a kimono that will pick up on the dark floral motif. In fact, it’s a kimono that I wore for a previous Style Imitating Art challenge. I am excited to restyle it for this challenge (unless I find a different one hiding in my rack of kimonos), but I am even more excited to dive into the biographical history of Clara Peeters.
If you want to be featured with your art inspired outfit in Terri’s review post on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, be sure to submit your photos to her at meadowtreestyle@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, October 4, 2022.
Happy Styling!
Keeping it on the edge,

On the bright side, you didn’t get sick during the holidays……..
Beautiful painting and very fun detail of the artist in the teapot.

I was thinking the same thing, Nancy! If I was going to get sick, the timing was pretty good!

I think that’s one of the things that makes me recognize when I’m sick…I sleep a lot! I hope you’re well on the mend now! This is a gorgeous piece, and I think I probably have something that will work! If not, I’ll keep trying!!

Thanks, Marsha! This crud is hanging on tight! I am still completely wiped out. It doesn’t help that I am up all night coughing my face off. I have one kid back at school but with a mild lingering cough. And now the other kid has it as bad as I do and is home with me again today. I am excited to style an outfit for this beautiful painting, but I need to feel better first! I am holding off until the weekend to even start planning something. I look forward to seeing what to create, my friend!

What a beautiful painting! It was unusual for female artists to rise to prominence during the 1600s. Such depth and interest in this painting — I love the reflection in the teapot. I look forward to the outfits created by bloggers in response to this challenge.
Thank you for participating in Talent-Sharing Tuesdays Link-Up 35.

I agree with you, Carol. I love the rich, deep colors in this work and am excited to research more about this artist because of how rare it is for a woman to command any type of artistic accolades or respect. I am excited to see what outfits come in for this one, too!
