Songful Style Link Party | “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” by Nancy Sinatra
I am so excited to kick off this first edition of Songful Style with Anne, Marsha, Michelle, and Suzy!
Songful Style is a new ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, Michelle of My Bijou Life, Marsha of Marsha in the Middle, and Anne of Spy Girl.
Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.
It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.
Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!
We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.
Suzy chose this month’s song, “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” by Nancy Sinatra. You can find the lyrics, the official music video, and multiple album covers for style inspiration in this post.
I had initially styled my new off white combat boots for this challenge but then we started adding more cohosts and extended our deadline so I decided to redo my outfit. I had quickly styled boots without really looking at all the inspiration that I shared. So I revisited more than just the song lyrics and found myself really drawn to Nancy’s outfit on this particular album cover.
Her combination of striped tights and striped turtleneck with a dark red mini skirt and tall red pirate boots is totally within my style wheelhouse so I decided I was going to pull out some fun striped tights to style into a contemporary version of Ms. Sinatra’s super cool 1960s outfit.
This burgundy leather mini skirt was a preloved find that I featured in The Thrifty Six in Fool’s Gold and my leopard coat was a consignment store purchase that has made many previous appearances here as well. I did not have a striped turtleneck like Nancy’s so I went for this gray space dyed cowl neck sweater that has a stripey pattern. Our BFF Adam gave me this Express sweater for Christmas about 6 years ago and it has remained in constant rotation since. Then I dug out some really old striped tights in burgundies and browns that were perfect with my Shoe Dazzle over the knee platform boots. I have worn these boots many times here as well. I threw in a little pattern mix with my maroon herringbone gloves that I recently added to my glove collection.
I think these boots were definitely made for walkin’ in the way that Nancy Sinatra intended in the song. But I will be the first to admit that they are definitely not the most comfortable boots for actual walkin’! They are what Nancy Baten and I would refer to as sittin’ shoes. But they are sassy AF and I love to wear them! How did I do interpreting this song into style?

The next song for our March 28, 2022, post is “Leather and Lace” by Stevie Nicks and Don Henley. Tomorrow I am going to share more details including lyrics, video, and other inspirations that I can find relating to the song as well as the reason I chose it. It is a very special song to me! If you are interested in joining us, you are welcome to begin styling now or check back tomorrow for additional inspiration relating to the song. Happy styling!
Feel free to link up your posts below especially if you have a Songful Style post or any post related to fashion and/or music.

I’m loving this collab already!
And finally something that worked organically for an IG Reel.
I don’t get many chances to wear my badass Fluevog boots (especially since I’m mostly at home) and this was the perfect opportunity.
Can you believe I’ve never heard next month’s song?
[insert shocked emoji]
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Gahhhh, Anne, I haven’t had a chance to visit all of your posts yet! I just got home from my road trip and now it’s catch up time. May I insert an even bigger life sized shocked emoji here about next month’s song??? SERIOUSLY?!!! How did that happen? I am assuming you have had a listen by now…

Ah, no worries, I totally get post-road trip exhaustion. Hard to get back to the quoditian when your head has been in a solo driving space.
I’ve been dutifully listening to/watching Leather and Lace. I think I like the “Induction” version (though Don looks like he had “work” done, haha). I can hear why it’s “your” song, you lovebirds!

Oh my gosh, I slept the entire day away yesterday! I feel jet lagged and I never left the east coast! I need to watch those videos a bit closer, I think. I wanna see what Don has had done! I am definitely bringing my Stevie Nicks tee and some kind of shawl into action for this one!

Imagine the amount of sleeping I did after 5 days of driving last October!
It IS just like jet lag. Road time is a TOTALLY different time zone!
I have NO IDEA yet for my L&L post. Maybe a romantic slide show with Sev. Because I’m getting all the feels listenting to L&L. (And he’s off on gigs until Sunday. So there’s that).
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Oh my gosh, Anne, thank you so much for sharing that bit about road lag. I started getting worried last night that I was getting sick. But today I am feeling much improved. Still a bit lethargic so I may take another day to just chill. Plus my website is being an ass and I am very impatiently waiting for it to run a backup so I can update it and try to fix the missing feature photo option! Arggghh. I’ll just smoke more pot and answer comments instead.
I just got the best idea for my L&L outfit…as long as I can find the thing that came to mind! I absolutely love that this song is giving you all the feels and I want to see a romantic slide slow with Severo on your post! Please, please, pretty please!
xoxo

Marsha Banks
Oh, you got it so right, Shelbee! I wanted to recreate that album cover, but 1) no red mini skirt (that fits) 2) no striped leggings or tights, and 3) no red boots! This has to be one of the most fun collaborations ever! I’m looking forward to next month…hmmm….

Marsha, thank you so much! I have not had a chance to check out all of your posts yet. I am playing catch up from my travels this week! I can’t wait to see what you all came up with. I have a million ideas for next month’s song. Now I have to narrow it down to something!

I remember singing that song at top volume on elementary school swings! 😄 You staged it beautifully –no surprise!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Michele! I love that little memory this song triggered for you!

Joanne
Love this interpretation! But I think I like the term sitting shoes even more… why are the cutest shoes always the most uncomfortable?!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Joanne! Nancy coined that term “sitting shoes” way back when we first started The Bad Buy Book and it has always made me laugh! I don’t know why the cutest shoes are better for sitting than walking! Maybe we are supposed to just sit and look pretty when we wear fabulous shoes!

Kathrine Eldridge
This is the perfect look for this song Shelbee! I adore the boots and the color palette of grey and burgundy. You rock this skirt! Thanks so much for the link up!
https://www.kathrineeldridge.com
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Kathrine, thanks so much! I was so happy with how this whole look came together. I find myself wearing a lot of burgundy in the winter months. It is such a rich color for combining with any neutral like gray, black, brown, white, or tan. I almost think burgundy can act as a neutral itself!
xoxo
Shelbee
Jill
Love the edgy vibes your skirt brings to this look! Those boots are fabulous! Such a great color!

Thanks so much, Jill! I definitely felt edgy in this outfit!

Laura Bambrick
I absolutely love your take on her look! You have modernized it beautifully! And you are rocking it too! That skirt is so flattering!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Aw, thanks so much, Laura! I was really happy with how this came together in a more contemporary version of Nancy’s outfit. This skirt was a fantastic consignment shop find!

Suzy Turner
OMG Shelbee, you absolutely NAILED it! I love that you used that particular album cover as your inspiration, because it’s all FABULOUS! Those boots….woooooohoooo, they are some sexy boots right there! Love that you and Nancy called them Sittin’ Boots lol. I loved our first post, and I can’t wait to see what we all come up with for the next one. Such fun!!
Big hugs, and I hope you got home safely,
Suzy xx

Thanks so much, Mica! I was really pleased with how this turned out! I am glad that the flooding has receded for you. I am sure that was a mess to deal with! It is currently snowing here…as it always seems to be!

[Part 2, no more “Reply” button in our thread]
Road Lag!!!!! You have coined a new condition!
Now what would be the term for inner journeys that are exhausting, Spirit Lag?
Then how about Housework Lag? Medical appointment Lag? Menopause Lag?
So. Many. Lags.
YES to the lovey dovey Severo slide show. I am gathering images.
Additionally, L&L has turned into this morning’s earworm.
Happy FriYay!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Oh I forgot how the reply thread gets tinier and tinier with each new reply! Reply lag! Hahaha
Menopause definitely comes with all sorts of lagging as well.
I have the same earworm now. And Yay for Friday!

Daenel, thanks so much, my friend! This is going to be such a fun series and a great switch around from focusing on age. You are welcome to play along with us any time that the music moves you!
