About Songful Style
Songful Style is an ageless style challenge series hosted by Suzy of The Grey Brunette, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle.
Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song that inspires you to create an outfit.
It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.
Anyone is welcome to join us on a permanent basis or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!
We will be posting on the last Monday of each month and will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post.

The Lyrics
“Heart of Glass” by Blondie
Once I had a love and it was a gas Soon turned out had a heart of glass Seemed like the real thing, only to find Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind Once I had a love and it was divine Soon found out I was losing my mind It seemed like the real thing but I was so blind Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind In between, what I find is pleasing and I'm feeling fine Love is so confusing, there's no peace of mind If I fear I'm losing you, it's just no good You teasing like you do Once I had a love and it was a gas Soon turned out had a heart of glass Seemed like the real thing, only to find Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind Lost inside, adorable illusion and I cannot hide I'm the one you're using, please don't push me aside We could've made it cruising, yeah (Da-da-da, da-dum-da-dum-da, da-dum-da-da-da Da-dum-da-dum-da, da-dum-da-da-da, da-dum-da-dum-da) Yeah, riding high on love's true bluish light Oooh-ah-ah, oooh-ah-ah, oooh-ah-ah, oooh-ah-ah Once I had a love and it was a gas Soon turned out, it was a pain in the ass Seemed like the real thing only to find Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind Oooh-ah-ah, oooh-ah-ah, oooh-ah-ah, oooh-ah-ah
About the Artist and the Song
Blondie is an American rock band that was founded by singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein in 1974. The band pioneered the new wave scene that was emerging in 1970s New York City with their first two albums featuring strong elements of punk and new wave. They quickly reached considerable success in the UK and Australia but remained largely an underground band in the United States until the release of their third album in 1978. During the next four years, they released three more albums which included a total of seven hit singles and they soon became known for their eclectic mix of musical styles, incorporating disco, pop, reggae, and early rap elements into their songs.
After the release of their sixth album in 1982, the group disbanded while Debbie Harry continued to pursue a solo career with varied success. She took a few years off from music to care for her partner, Chris Stein, who was suffering from a rare autoimmune skin disease.
The band reformed in 1997 and achieved success once again with the release of their number one single “Maria” in 1999, exactly 20 years after their first UK number one single was released. And what was their first ever number one single, you may be wondering. It was “Heart of Glass”, the song that will inspire my outfit in two weeks!
“Heart of Glass” was written by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. It was released as the third single on the bad’s third studio album, Parallel Lines, in January 1979. When the single was released, some radio stations were reluctant to play the song because of the lyric “Once I had a love and it was a gas, Soon turned out, it was a pain in the ass,” so they released an edited single eliminating the “pain in the ass” part.
Despite any controversy that may have surrounded this song, it reached number one in the United States, the UK, Australia, Austria, Canada, Switzerland, West Germany, and New Zealand. “Heart of Glass” is currently ranked at 138 on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. It is also ranked number 66 on the UK’s official list of biggest selling singles of all-time, selling 1.32 million copies. In 2015, “Heart of Glass” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for having “qualitative or historical significance.” Debbie Harry has stated that along with the song “Rapture”, she is most proud of having written “Heart of Glass.”
The earliest version of the song was titled “Once I Had a Love” and featured a slow funky sound with a basic disco beat. While this song was one of the first ever written by Blondie, it went through many iterations and different recorded versions before the song as we know it finally came to life.

I loved the band a lot. Think my favourite song is Rapture. But I never thought of them as punk. Perhaps I was more of a Sex Pistols girl. Have a great weekend!

I love them, too, Nancy! I don’t think I ever really classified them in a musical genre. But I can see the punk influence there especially in Debbie Harry’s personal style. Have a wonderful weekend, my friend!

Shelbee what are you doing to me with so many pictures of the LEGEND that is Debbie Harry?!! I absolutely adored her as a kid, and I can remember her wearing a *literal* black bin (trash) bag on the UK’s most popular – but sadly now defunct – music show Top of the Pops in about… 1979? 1980? I was in absolute awe and thought she was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen.
Till Madonna came along, of course 😉
I’m not sure I’ll be recreating a bin bag outfit but you never know, LOL!!
Thanks for hosting my lovely, have a great weekend

Hi Catherine! How are you, my friend?! Oh, I wanted to share even more photos of Ms. Harry but I had to stop myself! She is so fabulous…as is Madonna. I love that she wore a trash bag. I feel like she’s a bit of my kindred spirit in that respect. I have worn some bizarre things myself, like curtains and twine, and made them look good! LOL I hop you will join us for this fu style challenge!
