Style Imitating Art Gallery of Style

SIA Gallery of Style | Scrappy Squares by Anne M. Bray

It’s time for my favorite Style Imitating Art post…The Gallery of Style…featuring all of the amazing people who joined with their wonderfully creative looks inspired by my dear friend Anne’s cheerfully unique fiber art, The Scrappy Squares.

About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of MeadowTree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag SalazarTerri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

The Inspiration Artwork

You can read why I chose this specific piece as my inspiration artwork here.

Scrappy Squares by Anne M. Bray
Anne M. Bray Scrappy Squares

I started with the ShelBee because it is my namesake, but you were given the option to choose whichever Scrappy Square inspired you the most. The result was a beautifully colorful collage of magnificent interpretations of Anne’s art into style. I do believe the artist herself will get a huge kick out of what you all have done!

I took the liberty of creating side by side collage photos as well so you can see each Scrappy Square next to the outfit it inspired. If you click on the images, they will take you directly to each person’s blog (or blog post if they have written one).

Karo
Kezzie of KezzieAG

Kezzie was inspired by the Karo Scrappy Square and styled this gorgeous red jumpsuit with a black cardigan and beret. Take note of the print on her adorable shoes which picks up on the black and white pattern in the scrappy square.

Renee
Sally of Within a World of My Own
Within a World of My Own, Style Imitating Art

Inspired by the Renee, Sally combined light blue, olive, and multiple prints into her lovely outfit and also introduced a jagged element with her fringed scarf.  Her gorgeous DIY paper bead bracelets made from magazine and catalog pages represent the “scrappiness” and pay tribute to the spirit of upcycling and sustainability that is evident in Anne’s textile work.

Emma
Reni of Reni’s Odds and Sods

Reni was inspired by the red, black, and little bit of white that appears in the Emma. She created this lovely coordinate of contrasting black and white polka dots on her skirt and blouse paired with a bold red cardigan.

Stripey
Suzy of The Grey Brunette
The Grey Brunette, Style Imitating Art

Suzy chose the Stripey as her inspiration because she is a big fan of stripes and she just added this adorable striped maxi dress to her wardrobe and needed an occasion to showcase it. How serendipitous is that?

Melange 7
Marsha of Marsha in the Middle

Marsha was inspired by all the different colors and patterns in the Melange 7. She styled this stunning multi-patterned topper to highlight the beauty of a bold print mix.

Everything
Carmen of Fashion with Compassion

Carmen found all the inspiration she needed in the Everything which reminded her of this stunning skirt that boasts “patches” of various colourful prints. She is now calling it “THE EVERYTHING” skirt. Carmen says it’s like wearing a crazy quilt and it always makes her happy to wear it because it’s so fun. That is how you dress for your soul!

Terri of MeadowTree Style

Terri was also inspired by the Everything especially since her latest knitting project was the absolutely perfect thing. She knitted this magnificent sweater from multi-colored recycled silk Sari yarn. The repurposing of old Saris into yarn also fits Anne’s “Scrappy Square” aesthetic.

Michelle of My Bijou Life
My Bijou Life, Style Imitating Art

Michelle was inspired by the ShelBee and created this adorably cheerful look in bright yellow trousers with a black and white print blouse and leopard print kimono. She picked up on the tiny hint of pink in the Scrappy Square and so she made sure to capture her pink azaleas in the background.

Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey

After some debating, Salazar decided to go with the ShelBee Scrappy Square and paired a wonderful yellow skirt with a super pretty black ruffled gingham blouse to echo the colors and ruffles of the square. To complete her ShelBee inspired outfit, she also added her gorgeous bee brooch. Salazar has the most amazing collection of brooches!

And finally Me!
Shelbee on the Edge, Style Imitating Art

I also was inspired by the ShelBee because it was inspired by me! I incorporated the same paisley scarf thingie that was used to create this Scrappy Square. Although mine is in burgundy, I was able to build the rest of my outfit in black and white stripes with hints of yellow to accurately reflect the whole nature of the ShelBee Scrappy Square.

Shelbee on the Edge

That concludes this edition of the SIA Gallery of Style. Thanks so much to everyone who joined this time. It really does make me feel so very special!

If you have submitted a photo and it was not included, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle.

Also be sure to stop back on Monday, May 9, 2022, for the next art inspiration. It is Salazar’s pick!

Keeping it on the edge,

Shelbee

Thanks so much, Suzy! It did take some time to put this one together, but isn’t it all so fabulous and totally worth the effort?! I will be making my rounds to read all of the individual posts at some point today. I can’t to wait to read all the little details of each outfit.

I love it when i see a lot of women interpretate a theme in so many different ways! Love the artwork too. Colours do attract don’t they!

  • Kezzie

Ah, I really enjoyed this challenge! You did such a beautiful job pairing everyone up with their inspirations- it must have taken you ages and shows what a fab curator you are! It’s brilliant how everyone interpreted it (and what a nice lot of submissions!). The scrappy squares are really beautiful- Anne is very clever!

Oh my goodness, Kezzie, thank you so much! You are so sweet. I really enjoy putting together these gallery posts so the time it took was well spent! I guess that is also part of my creative outlet. When I was creating the collages for this one, I kind of felt like I was playing with Fashion Plates from when I was a kid! It really gave me all sorts of wonderful nostalgic feelings. My creative soul really does live in fashion and art. I am already looking forward to the next one! It is Salazar’s pick this time.

Carol, thanks so much! At first, I debated whether I should stick with the just the ShelBee Scrappy Square for everyone, but then I liked the idea of getting different inspirations that appeal to each individual. It turned out better than I even expected!

Great fun to see all the different interpretations, particularly the ShelBee. Didn’t Anne Bray used to be a fashion blogger?

  • carmen

“Since my clothing inspired the art, I now want the art to inspire your clothing!” Fabulous challenge idea Shelbee, and so well written and put together with love! A fun post and inspiring gallery of style, I love how everyone interpreted their Scrappy Square.

Anne is very talented and resourceful; Scrappy Squares are such a creative way to upcycle! How cool that “ShelBee” was inspired by YOU and I enjoyed reading the story how it came about with the yellow paisley scarf/poncho you gave to Anne.

Kezzie’s red and black out is just perfect with the black and white shoes, how cute!

Sally’s upcycled scraps for her DIY bracelet is just right for the theme and the Renee Scrappy Square!

Reni’s look is very chic with the polka dot skirt worn with a red cardigan and black beret.

Suzy’s striped maxi dress is a cool summery look!

Marsha’s colourful topper matches the Melange 7 perfectly!

Terri chose the same Scrappy Square as I did – The Everything – and created an amazing sweater from upcycled yarn, another great repurposing idea!

Michelle’s yellow pants worn with black and white leopard print looks wonderfully wild!

Salazar looks lovely with her interpretation of ShelBee, I absolutely love the BEE broach!

YOU chose the right Scrappy Square because you inspired Anne to make these delightful fabric poofs!

Thanks so much for including me! It was a pleasure to be part of this Style Imitating Art. 🙂

    Have a fashionable weekend!
