SIA Gallery of Style | Les Demoiselles d’Avignon by Pablo Picasso
You all know how much I love this Style Imitating Art series. Now that I have joined as a co-host, I have to admit that my favorite part is putting together the gallery post. I really appreciate everyone’s unique sense of creativity in interpreting the art and turning it into wearable style and the whole thing just makes my heart happy. And that’s what this is all about…making our hearts happy and allowing that contagion to spread all around us wherever we go. By the way, did you know that happiness is like 100 times more contagious than Covid? (I haven’t checked that statistic because I just made it up, but I’m sticking by it as truth anyway.)
But enough about that and a little more about art and style. Here we go…
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of MeadowTree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as curator, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the curator by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the curator will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join! You are invited to share your images on Instagram or other social media platforms. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
The Inspiration Artwork
You can read why I chose this specific piece as my inspiration artwork here.
Les Demoiselles d’Avignon by Pablo Picasso (Oil on Canvas, 1907)
The Gallery of Style (in random order)
Mike of PostCard Purposes
Mike chose an outfit that matches the muted colors in the painting and the stripes on his sleeves represent the straight line/angular style of the Cubist figures. I really like the way he layered to add different textures and depth to this look with the combination of stripes and cable knit.
Reni of Reni’s Odd and Sods
Reni shared an outfit from last summer that has all the perfect colors to match the painting. I absolutely love her tie dye trousers and look how perfectly her background matches the painting, too.
Michelle of My Bijou Life
Michelle’s beautiful printed top really captures all the pinks and dark reds in the painting. With the rest of her outfit anchored in black, it highlights the hard dark lines that outline the figures. And those boots! Yes, please, I’d like a pair.
Sally of Within a World of My Own
Sally drew her inspiration from the color palette and angularity of the painting to create a simple sandstone coral/white/grey-blue color blocked outfit with a striped silk scarf and brown leather for accessories. This shade of coral is looks so great on Sally and I love the boldness of the striped scarf on the color blocking.
Marsha of Marsha in the Middle
Marsha styled a gorgeous dress featuring a floral print on a neutral background in all the same colors that appear in the painting. She creatively layered her dress over wide cuffed trousers which is one of my favorite style trends ever. I love this look and the way Marsha is looking away from the camera to keep with the whole voyeurism theme.
The Co-Hosts
Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey
Salazar said, “I know I’d wear something pink, and as I don’t have a lot of pink items in my closet, it makes choosing a lot easier! I paired my pink shirt and loafers with this skirt since its checker pattern and colors reflect the strong line of blue/gray and brown of the painting’s background, and I also added my ‘lady’ brooch as an obvious nod to the ladies in the painting.” The colors in Salazar’s skirt couldn’t be more perfect. I find the bold checker print really appealing but the “lady” pin is my favorite!
Terri of MeadowTree Style
Terri created a really elegant look in light neutrals with a black trousers and gold jewelry. I love the pink tassel that she added to her handbag and her necklace is artwork on its own. Such a pretty outfit!
And me!
I wore a nude bodycon dress under a white kimono to really try to mimic the nude women in the painting without actually being nude myself. But then I didn’t like this dress at all from color to fit and ended up in my new pink lacy underwear instead.
That is the end of this edition of the SIA Gallery of Style. Thanks so much to everyone who joined this time. It really does make me feel so very special!
If you have submitted a photo and it was not included, please let me know and I will make the necessary edits. Sometimes emails get lost in the shuffle.
Also be sure to stop back on Monday, March 28, 2022, for the next art inspiration. It is Salazar’s pick!
Keeping it on the edge,

What a variety of wonderful women and even a man! And that painting!! I love it. Like I love a lot made by Picasso. But this painting is so intriguing. The colours, the movement, the lines, I love it.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Nancy! This is probably my favorite painting of all time by any artist! It is very intriguing and very powerful and it’s hard to not get lost staring at it! I need to get to the MoMA one of these days and see the real thing!

What a fun painting and such fun pairings! I don’t have a lot of pink in my wardrobe, either, but I love how everyone interpreted the style. It was cool to see a man’s take on the art, too :).
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Anita! I have heaps of bright pink but very little in paler shades. I love when Mike joins our SIA challenges! It is so great to have a man participate. He has been joining for many years…long before I even knew of this series!

As usual, the diversity is wonderful. Everyone certainly had their own interpretation of this one and I like them all.

It really is such wonderful diversity, Terri! That’s why I love all of these little blogger collaborations. You can see so many different takes on the same themes, etc. There really is something for everyone’s taste.
This series is one of my favorite creative things that I have ever been involved with. I cannot express enough gratitude to you and Salazar for allowing me to be such a big part of it.

Marsha Banks
I was pretty sure I was going to go with this dress, but I just ran out of time to make it a blog post. But, I did turn it into a blog post for Thursday!!! Just not SIA! Thanks for the challenge, Shelbee!

Aw, Marsha, I love that! You can post your SIA post whenever you want, I think! I am the one who has to stick to the schedule. Haha. I love how many people join this series and share separate posts for it, too! This series is seriously one of my favorite things that I have ever been a part of in my life!

It’s fun to see how different bloggers interpret the Picasso painting. You were the only one who utilized a physical pose taken from one of “les demoiselles”. Very creative! Everyone else simply went with color and pattern. But, it’s all interesting and fun. Thanks for posting the gallery.

Thanks so much, Carol! I love seeing all the different creative interpretations of the art presented in this series. I generally go way over board and if there is a pose to mimic, I will do it! I have struck some pretty strange poses for this series. Haha. Have a wonderful day!

Everyone did such a great job! I love the way different aspects of the painting were used as inspiration. You were focused on the substance of the painting, Mike and Sally utilized the geometric lines of the painting, and then the rest of relied on some aspect of color. Fun, fun, fun!

Thanks, Michelle! I love the way you just broke that down! That’s what is so great about this series. You get so many vastly different interpretations and people try things they may not otherwise have tried with brilliant results. Fun, fun, fun is right! Thanks for joining and not wimping out! Hahaha

It’s such a shame that I was away and wasn’t able to take part in this week’s SIA, Shelbee. Although, having said, I think I might have really struggled with this one! I think everyone did a fab job though. I love your sexy little pose!

Thanks, Suzy! I knew you were traveling and wouldn’t be playing along for this one, but maybe you will get inspired later and try something! I definitely struggled with this one and I picked it! I am looking forward to Salazar’s next artwork!

You need colour in your outfits, that attempt at nude, does nothing for you. Sorry.
Thanks for joining in with #pocolo hope to see you back soon

Thanks, Suzanne. I think I did mention in the post that I hated the way the dress looked and I will be using for sleepwear now. I don’t think it matters when I’m sleeping if the color is good or bad on me! Haha. Have a fabulous day!

Leslie Susan Clingan
Was visiting Marsha and she shared the link to this SIA round up. So glad she did. I love SIA and would like to get back to participating. Had really forgotten all about it. Knew that Daenel had bowed out of the group and is concentrating more on her (fabulous) photography. And I think I knew you were the newest hostess!! But I am sad to say I have fallen so behind in blog reading. And blogging in general. Hoping to get back at it.
Anyway…I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the interpretations. And Mr. Picasso’s stunning art. What a color palette. Was so focused on the blush and rosy shades that I didn’t notice the gray-blue until it started showing up in some of the folks’ outfits. Had to take another look at the painting. Laura at I Do DeClaire wore a pretty look this week that would have been perfect for this challenge.
Love your slip dress with that sensuous, feminine kimono. Reminded me that I bought a bodycon dress (on my body????) that I have never worn. Purchased it on a skinny day. And it has been chubby days ever since. Going to pull it out and use it as inspiration to get back to Weight Watchers. You look so pretty, so girly, so seductive.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Leslie! I have been so far behind on visiting and commenting on blogs as well so I totally understand. Life just gets crazy sometimes. And sometimes when it isn’t even all that crazy, I just get sort of lazy! Haha. I hope you do get back to joining us for SIA! Honestly, these style challenges are what have kept me motivated and moving for the past two years! Otherwise I may have never gotten out of my leggings.
I just got into my “goal jeans” which are the jeans I wore on my first date with my husband 14 years ago…that made me so happy despite the fact that the low hip rider style looked terrible on me! But they fit! You should try that bodycon dress on with a kimono…you might find that you can wear it before WW!
