Shelbee on the Rags: Shaggy Raggy Tassels & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #691
So you know how the Shaggy Raggy Garland was inspired by the “Unicorn Tears” wall hanging which was inspired by the “Not That Innocent” rag curtain? Well, I kept riding that inspiration train which carried me from the Shaggy Raggy Garland directly to these giant Shaggy Raggy Tassels.
With still some more scraps leftover from all of those other raggery projects, I was brainstorming ideas for something to hang on my front door.
I recently removed my holiday wreath and would have replaced it with the raggy tie dye wall hanging that previously adorned it, but I decided to list it for sale since I already have two of them hanging in my bedroom.
Once the wreath was down, it was only a matter of days before the nakedness of my front door started to bother me. And like the inspiration often happens, it felt like the idea of giant door tassels was personally hand delivered directly to my brain from the keeper of some magical mystical well of untapped creativity.
Using up some of the last leftover scraps, I began building 18″ long monochromatic rag ropes in the remaining colors. At the end, I had a big pile of rag ropes in white, pinks, blues, and greens. I gathered together all the pink and white ones and looped them onto a strip of pink fabric, securing them tightly at the top while also creating a loop for hanging. Then I cinched it about 5″ down using a rubber band and another pink fabric scrap. I did the same with the blue and green ropes, using teal twine and an ivory ribbon to secure it. The ribbon is upcycled from the packaging of my Ulivary kimono robes. These big shaggy tassels look like adorable little raggy octopuses. The kids want me to put googley eyes on them!
I promptly hung the blue and green raggy tassel on my front door and I freaking love it against the teal. That is where she was intended to go so that is where she shall stay! (Until Thanksgiving when the holiday wreath takes center stage for a few months.)
I thought these turned out so darn cute that I decided to use up some more fabrics strips to create matching tassels. I had a whole bunch of blue and gray scraps that were cut from a bag of donated clothing so I began tying them into 18″ long rag ropes until I had four piles of 45 strands each.
Next I secured and tied them into tassels using more fabric strips and some rubber bands.

Thanks so much, Jill! They are really easy to make! They just take some patience with all the knot tying but they don’t take very long to make and you definitely don’t need any advanced crafting skills! Ha.

These are so cute! I love the blue one on your teal front door. (Speaking of which, this is the year, I want to paint my front door, which is currently white.) You have been so productive. Wonderful work!

Thank you, Michelle! What color are you planning to paint your front door? You know, I was just thinking yesterday about what a front door can say about the people who live in the house. Most houses have standard neutral colored front doors, don’t they? And then when I see a vibrantly colored front door standing out amidst all the white, tan, gray, and brown doors, it really catches my attention and makes me wonder what kind of personality chose that front door color! There is a house in my town that has a wide set of white front porch steps with the risers painted bright pink. It makes me smile every time I drive past it!

We are leaning towards teal / turquoise, but also considering Ford Engine Blue, or red / burgundy. Our house is beige. 🙄 And it is vinyl siding, so we can’t paint it. I know what you mean about wondering about the people who use actual color on their houses. There is a house in west Asheville that is painted purple. Both the house and the black wrought iron fence are decorated with musical motifs, and the front yard is a wildflower garden. So pretty! And definitely eye catching!

Oooh, I wanna see that purple house in Asheville! I want a purple house. I love all three color choices for your front door. My door was dark red which pleased me for a long time. I had always wanted a red door and it was red when we moved in so I loved it. Then I tired of it. And now I love the teal. Ford Engine Blue would look really striking on a front door, too. Or bright turquoise. All the bold statement colors appeal to me and would speak beautiful things about your home!

Let’s put the purple house on the agenda! 😁 Now if I could just make up my mind on the door color. Fortunately, I have awhile to decide before it’s painting weather.

Yes, definitely! I am looking at the end of the week for our girls’ day but I will text/call you once I get settled at Becca’s and we can figure out the details then. I am super excited to see you and the purple house!

Thanks so much, Marsha! I think the spirit is telling me to take a break until after my road trip next week. My elbow is super sore from all the knot tying! But I suspect I will get much inspiration during my vacation!
