Shelbee on the Rags: “Café au Lait” Shaggy Raggy Garland
It has been about 7 weeks since I shared a raggery project despite having completed a bunch of things since I returned home from my annual winter break road trip. The Unicorn Tears-inspired Rainbow Shaggy Raggy Garland sold at the STATE ST. Market so I decided to make a few more garland strands in different color palettes.
I wanted to make one in a neutral color palette thinking it would appeal to more style aesthetics than the bright, bold colors might. I forgot to take photos of my rag palette so you only get to see the final product for this one.
The fabric strips to make this garland were cut from old sheets and pillow cases, unwanted curtain panels, and about 10-12 pairs of donated trousers. When it was completed, Archie said it looks like coffee and that is how this shaggy raggy garland got its name.
I love this garland on my fireplace so much that I am keeping it there. I do still have a bunch of textiles in these colors ready to be ragged so I am going to make at least one more shaggy raggy garland in this neutral palette.
I really enjoy making the garland as much as I enjoy creating the large scale rag curtains. The entire process is just so cathartic for me. But I fall in love with every completed project which makes letting them go really difficult. I have to let them go, however, because that is the whole point of my raggery journey…to create something new and fresh from old things and then move them out of my house!

That is always the problem with creating things…you don’t want to let them go, but you also know you can have too many! I’m sure this gorgeous warm neutral garland (or its sister) will find a home quickly!

It really is a problem! What do other creators do with their creations? If you aren’t selling them or giving them away, what do you do with them? I want to keep creating because that is my passion. I hate selling things. It is annoying and I have never been a salesperson. So I really do need to figure out what to do with all the raggery projects.

The neutrals in this garland really rock with the teal! I either donate or consign my clothing. Although I do have a few pieces held back to alter into something new and improved.

Thanks, Michelle! I really am liking the neutrals, too, even though I much prefer bright bursts of color. I have a rainbow one in the living room doorway still which I love because it coordinates with my colorful rag rugs.
