My Simple DIY Poncho & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #742

Happy Friday, everyone! We are still buried in snow where I live and it just keeps snowing. I have been spending most of my days in fleece lined leggings, a hoodie, and snow boots. If I am not outside shoveling snow or splitting wood, I am inside keeping the fire burning and the house running. I am content and satisfied, but I am also cold and tired and ready for spring.

So today I am going to share an outfit that is also ready for spring (and photographed in summer). Do you remember my DIY corduroy wrap that I shared in the fall? I made this cute little poncho from the same swath of brown corduroy clearance fabric. I simply used a poncho that I already had, traced it onto the fabric, cut it out, and sewed it. It was probably the easiest garment I have ever made for myself. Except for that time in high school when I wrapped a curtain around my waist, secured it with a piece of twine, and called it a skirt. That was definitely easier. But this poncho was really easy, too!

The embroidery on the poncho fabric has little bits of turquoise which coordinate perfectly with my turquoise maxi dress. And I love brown and turquoise together so it was an obvious pairing. The embroidered design and the chocolaty shade of brown also look really great with red.

My thrifted brown cowgirl boots have been in frequent rotation ever since I snagged them a few years ago for under $10. I actually found them in the mens’ section at a local thrift store. Since I have rather large sized feet, I can often find some pretty cool mens’ footwear in my size. In addition to these very handy brown cowboy boots, I also found these black combat boots, these tan suede ankle boots, these two-toned brown cowboy boots, and these two-toned tan cowboy boots in secondhand shops. So don’t let yourself be restricted by gender identifications when shopping for wardrobe items. Just because it says “mens” doesn’t mean I can’t wear it. Heck, just because it says “curtain” doesn’t mean I can’t wear it. I will wear what I want in whatever way I choose…just like this fabulous lady whose amazing hat just might be a couch arm cover!

To complete this brown and turquoise outfit with my simple DIY poncho, I accessorized with my brown straw fedora, my rainbow straw bag, and piles of bracelets and necklaces in brown and turquoise.

Now I just need the sun to shine and the snow to melt so I can get outside for a giant dose of some natural vitamin D. Until then, I will be dreaming of spring’s arrival.

Sorry to hear you are still up to your elbows in snow! Your easy DIY poncho is really cute. I love the fabric pattern and blue and brown makes a great outfit color combination. You must have some great thrifting opportunities in your area to have found those great boots secondhand. I have only found one pair of cowboy boots that fit me thrifting and I think I only lucked out because the they had to go to the shoe repair to get the one of the heels replaced. Love them though. Hope you have a good weekend and thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much, Di! I am quite literally up to my elbows in snow. The snow pile in my front yard is at least shoulder high. And there is another storm coming tonight! It seriously is not ending this winter. As for thrifting, we really do have some phenomenal secondhand shops where I live. My sister (who lives in another state) is in a bunch of thrifting groups on social media and she said my area is widely known in those groups as having amazing thrift shops. I haven’t been out thrifting in a while but now I am kind of hankering for it! I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend.

Can I just say, I love that you wear boots, a lot! Personally I have (very!) large feet and getting a woman’s boot is very difficult, and one that is actually comfortable, even harder LOL! But decades ago when I was younger and spent more money for clothes than I do now, I splurged on a pair of boots from an upscale shop that carried womens larger sizes in footwear. They were lovely! But they were not comfortable, however, that did not stop my younger self from wering them when ever I could! Love the boots and ponch combo!

Aw, thanks so much, Melynda! I remember how difficult it was 30 years ago to find cute women’s shoes in my giant foot size! I also remember when stores like Payless started carrying women’s sizes 11 and up. I was so excited to have more options. Now I don’t have as much trouble finding my size because the big sizes are always left over by the time the sales come around so that is one bonus to big feet. Ha.

Oh my gosh, Sally, I miss the green grass so much! One spring day when Archie was in kindergarten, he came out of school and saw a tiny bit of green grass peeking from beneath the melting snow piles. He ran over to the green patch, squatted down and touched the grass and yelled excitedly, “I have missed you, old friend!” I laughed so hard. But I get it! The green grass is so much prettier than the gray snirt. Haha.

  • Your True Self

Hi, Shelbee – I was so surprised to see how wonderful your DIY poncho looks! I didn’t expect such awesome style from something simple. Goes to show, doesn’t it? I’m also surprised at the beautiful drape you got from a corduroy fabric. I normally assume it’s pretty stiff and substantial. And then your overall look is also amazing. Great job, Girl! Love your humor, too. I got a laugh from your curtain skirt and the couch sleeve hat. Lol! Yes, we can certainly wear what we like, now can’t we? Thanks for this super creative post – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

Hehehe, thanks so much, Angie! This comment really made me smile. The fabric has a really soft, almost silky feel on the underside of the corduroy and the corduroy is really thin with a soft brushed cotton feel which gives it the drape. I really need to get back to creating with my sewing machine. I haven’t made anything new in a while and I have a bunch of new ideas to try out! I hope you have a wonderful weekend, my friend!

I love the combination of blue and brown and the contrast of the girlie poncho with the cool boots. I hope spring starts soon for you….. and me….. I’m so sick of the cold and the rain. And sitting inside for that matter. I hope you will have a lovely weekend and thank you so much for the feature!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thank you, Nancy! I have always loved blues and browns together, too. The snow is getting ridiculous here. I literally don’t want to go outside ever. But the fireplace is really nice! I hope your weekend is wonderful, my friend.
