My New Living Room Tree from Commercial Silk
I don’t know if any of you remember this post from January where I mentioned leaving my Christmas tree up with just the lights all year round and calling it my “living room tree” instead. I really liked the ambience created by the soft white tree lights in the early morning hours while I drank my coffee on the couch. But the tree was taking up quite a bit of room and as Spring started nearing and the sun was rising earlier, we eventually did take down the living room tree (some time in March, I think). But I had been wanting to add a small lighted topiary of some sort to my living room decor to create a similar effect. And in all honesty, I just never got around to shopping for one. So when Commercial Silk reached out to me inquiring if I would be interested in a collaboration, I was super excited to agree after I scanned through their amazing selection of beautiful artificial plants and topiaries.
*This is a sponsored post. The topiary was provided to me for purposes of this blog review. As always, all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
With my husband’s input (we were in disagreement for a few minutes because I very much like the ball topiaries like this one and he thinks they are “hideous”), I chose the Cedar Topiary Spiral Tree that stands 3 feet tall, the perfect height to place on an end table. Just 9 days after placing my order, my spiral topiary arrived at my front door. I quickly set to work on decorating my new living room tree.
I headed off to Michaels with coupons in hand to see what I could find. I wanted a new pot for my topiary instead of the plain green one that it came in. When I spotted this adorable wooden bucket (no link available), I could not resist. At half off, it was only $9.
This Creative Collection™ Shimmer Lights Rope LED Garland By Ashland™ was exactly what I had pictured so into my cart it went. It was on sale for $8. So for just $17, I had everything I needed to customize my pretty little tree.
Once I had the LED garland in place (it took both my husband and I about 7 tries to get it right), it was still lacking something. It needed more. Now for those of you who know me, you know I absolutely abhor birds. All of them. They freak me out more than most anything in this world. Because of this, my sister just loves to gift me all sorts of bird things. Because that is what sisters do, I suppose. We tease and instigate and aggravate each other decades after we have exited childhood. So I had this little bird figurine, a gift from my sister, sitting peacefully on a shelf. She has now taken up residence in my topiary.
However, the children and I have been arguing over where exactly she should be perched. I say up high, they say down low. As a result, she just keeps moving around from branch to branch, happy as any little bird figurine can be. Until Mr. Cat staked his claim at the base of the tree. Although he doesn’t seem to be bothering her much and they are existing in perfect harmony while my living room is softly illuminated in the early morning and late night hours by the simple LED lights on my pretty little topiary.
I have to say this…something as simple as my new topiary, a.k.a. living room tree, really does make me happy. I mean, nature in general makes me happy. And being able to bring a bit of nature inside my house for my personal enjoyment makes me really, really happy. And nature with no maintenance…that is a total win for me…because I kill things…plants, specifically. Every single time. I have yet to keep a plant alive for more than a few months. I have even managed to kill a cactus. The only living plant that I have kept alive so far is my Japanese algae ball. And now my Commercial Silk topiary…I am pretty sure I can’t kill it since it’s not alive in the first place!

Ha ha, fantastic! Would be great for me too add I give my plants once a week a lot of water and that’s what they have to deal with.

Nancy, you are too funny! But you are keeping your plants alive, right? I just flat out kill them all!

Twinkle lights give everything ambience. I love them. Alas, they burn out, or the cat pulls them down, and I have to put them up again. Permanent twinkle lights would make me very happy. Your lovely topiary makes me happy too, Shelbee. I love what you did with it, and the bird makes it for me.

Thanks so much, Susan! It is so true that sometimes the smallest things can make us so happy! I do hope my cats leave it alone!

What is it about those soft lights on a green tree? Clearly, it’s year round magic.
Can’t help but chuckle a bit about your aversion to birds. I really enjoy watching, feeding, watering and housing birds.
I agree with your boys about the placement of that chubby bird figurine. It’s just more balanced (because of it’s ample size) somewhere in the bottom 3rd of your topiary. So, there’s my 2 cents worth. 🙂

Thanks so much, Jude! I agree about the soft lights and the magical comfort they bring. And I think my bird aversion comes from 2 parakeets I had as a teenager. They were quite nasty and I grew afraid of them over time. And now here I am in my 40’s still just freaked out by the little flying creatures! As far as the bird figurine, I think I just need to get 2 more and place one near the top, one near the bottom, and one on the edge of the bucket. What do you think?

It brings you a sense of ¨alegría¨, happy vibes, doesn´t it? 😊

Yes, indeed, Helen, it really does! I find myself smiling quite contentedly when I look at it! I think it is the nice soft lights that bring comfort to me.

Very cute. I think the bird looks better lower on the tree ha ha:)

Thanks, Alicia! I think I need to get a few more birds so I can place them all around! Maybe one up high, one down low, and one sitting on the edge of the bucket?

Lovely shimmer lights – I haven’t seen lights attached to a rope like that for decoration. Looks good. Loving the idea of having a Christmas-like-tree for a living room. We have tons of plants in the house and always love the feel of plants in the home.

Thanks so much! I do love the feel of plants and shimmer lights inside, but I kill all plants, so I definitely have to stay with artificial ones. And I had never seen lights on a twine rope before either. I thought they were really spectacular when I spotted them! And they fit my little tree perfectly.
