Move Over Fab 40’s, It’s Time for a New Style Game & Link Up On the Edge #281
“The time has come. The time is now. Marvin K. Mooney will you please go now?”
Dr. Seuss
Is anyone familiar with that book? Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now! by Dr. Seuss? It is one of my childhood favorites. My father used to read it to me in the dentist’s office when I was young. I had terrible anxiety about going to the dentist. We would sit in the cold unwelcoming waiting room and my father would read the whole book, really loudly in a silly voice until I was in fits of laughter and had forgotten all about my dental anxiety. I don’t think we ever had a copy of the book at home, but as soon as I had children of my own, it was one of the first books I bought for our home. I still take it out and read it to my kids in a silly voice every once in a while. They don’t laugh at me the way I laughed at my father though. They just roll their eyes, tell me I’m weird, and walk out of the room before I turn the first page. Oh well. They don’t know the brilliant poetry they’re missing out on. Their loss, I guess.
Anyway, Marvin K. Mooney is simply about a guy who isn’t going to leave until he is good and ready to go. Similar to The Fab 40’s. I honestly don’t even know how long this series has been around. Sheela Goh started it long before I even began blogging and I joined for the first time as a guest blogger in March of 2017. In September of 2018, I was invited to join as a permanent member of the group and over the last three and half years we have had members come and go for various different reasons.
Over the past few months, we have come to a place where it is just Suzy and me who remain. So we had a chat about it last week and decided that perhaps The Fab 40’s is a bit like Marvin K. Mooney…it has worn out its welcome. It’s time to go. Move onto different things. Get out. Good-bye. Farewell. Plus we were growing tired of the strict age guideline…just 40’s. That’s nonsense and needs to leave.
But Suzy and I have enjoyed collaborating so much that we decided to team up and introduce a new ageless style challenge series. We are calling it Songful Style. Each month we will share a song with the lyrics and video and we invite you to use whatever aspect of the song inspires you to create an outfit.
It is similar to Style Imitating Art where we use artwork to inspire our outfit creations. Except Songful Style gives you lyrics, music, video, and album artwork to inspire your fashion creativity. You may even find inspiration in a memory triggered by the selected song. It is all open to your own personal interpretation and just a fun way to discover new music and get a little bit more creative with your wardrobe.
If you are interested in joining us on a permanent basis, we would love to have you! Or you can just play along without any obligation to do anything other than feel inspired. We are flexible and fun and just want to find more ways to play dress up because it’s what we enjoy doing!
*Edited: We will be posting on the first last Monday of each month with our first post coming on February 28, 2022. We will announce our song choice for the following month at the end of each post. We have extended the post date because Michelle of My Bijou Life, Anne of Spy Girl, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle have also agreed to join us on a monthly basis! This way they have more time to style their outfits and if anyone else wants to join, you have a few weeks to plan as well. In fact, I am rethinking my own outfit now!
For our first Songful Style post, we will be sharing outfits inspired by “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” by Nancy Sinatra.
The Video:
The Lyrics (Source):
“These Boots Are Made For Walkin'”
You keep saying you’ve got something for me
Something you call love, but confess
You’ve been a-messin’ where you shouldn’ta been a-messin’
And now someone else is gettin’ all your best
These boots are made for walkin’
And that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you
Yeah
You keep lying when you oughta be truthin’
And you keep losin’ when you oughta not bet
You keep samin’ when you oughta be a-changin’
Now what’s right is right, but you ain’t been right yet
These boots are made for walkin’
And that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you
You keep playin’ where you shouldn’t be playin’
And you keep thinkin’ that you’ll never get burned, ha!
I just found me a brand new box of matches, yeah
And what he knows, you ain’t had time to learn
These boots are made for walkin’
And that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you
Are you ready boots?
Start walkin’!
Album Covers:
There is a lot to unpack with this inspiration I think. I hope you enjoy the music and this series. Let us unite song and style in one creative burst of fun! And please let us know if you would like to join us. We are open to any new ideas you may have as well.
Happy styling!

I am super excited, too! After I pulled all the information for this post, I kind of wanted to style something else using the album covers or the video as inspiration! Oh well. Next time I will be sure to check all the things related to the song before styling my outfit. This is going to be so fun!

Crazy, I thought I knew all the Dr. Seuss books yet I have not read this one. I must change that immediately! What great memories of your dad. Glad you and Suzy are changing things up – it’s always nice to do something new, isn’t it? Gets you all fired up. I LOVE Nancy Sinatra’s song, such a good one to sing along to and dance!!!
xo,

Thank you, Kellyann! You definitely must read Marvin K. Mooney! Oh it does bring some fond memories back for me. I am glad to change things up as well. New is good. It really does ignite a new fire of creativity! And now everyone who reads this post will be singing “These boots are made for walkin’” all day long. You’re welcome! Have a wonderful weekend, my friend.

One of the biggest bonuses of grandkids is another chance to read aloud to kids!

I can’t believe there is a Dr. Suess book I haven’t heard of before! My boys were huge Suess fans growing up and we used to search for different ones to read (and reread!) together. I’m going to have to look for that one! Sounds like a fun new inspiration for clothing/style. I can’t wait to see where you take this.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Joanne! Kellyann said the same thing about this book! I didn’t know that it was one of his more obscure titles because it has been a favorite of mine for so many decades! It’s a super silly and fun one and I often make references to it with my kids when I want them to go away and stop nagging me! Haha. I am excited to see where we go with this new series, too. It should be lots of fun though!

Kathrine, thanks so much! I had styled an outfit before I even looked up the album covers or watched the video. Now I think I need to style something different! We may change the date! Haha. Have a great weekend!

Ooooooh! Count me in! Would love to join as a regular – then I’d post at least once a month on SpyGirl.
Will send my boots picture soon.
I have a good “Boots” memory for you.
This was at Mattel, when I designed Barbies.
The “hardgoods” (plastic parts) designer in our group wanted to present some new shoe designs to upper management. We made a video with dolls in the new shoes stomping the catwalk and Nancy’s “Boots” was our music!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
OMG, I love that Boots memory, Anne! And you are definitely counted in! I just sent an email. I’m thinking we push the post to the end of the month so rush on photos and stuff. I am so excited for this series!

Love your soulful sounds collaboration idea, it sounds like a lot of fun! So nice that you have such a fond memory of your dad to look back on. Dr. Suess’ poetry is such a joy for people of any ages, (except maybe teenage boys?) I will have to revisit Marvin K. Mooney! Have a good weekend and thanks for the link up!

Thanks so much, Di! My father has been inspiring me frequently the past few weeks! It is very heart warming from this end of it. Haha. I hope you have a marvelous weekend as well, my friend!

Nancy Sinatra certainly has some zingers in that song! I love when she turns nouns into verbs (like truthin’) 😉
Cheryl Shops | http://www.cherylshops.net
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
It is such a great song, isn’t it, Cheryl?! I went back to read the lyrics again and the zingers are on point! Then I got curious to see if Nancy wrote the lyrics herself. But she didn’t. Lee Hazlewood did…a man. And here I thought a badass woman penned those zingers! But…still a great song and Nancy’s delivery is on point! I hope you have a fabulous weekend.

When I was a special education teacher, we always read Dr Seuss books, and this one was a favorite with the kids!
I love the idea of using music as inspiration! My mom had this album, and I remember turning the stereo up (back when stereos were a piece of furniture) so loud the windows would vibrate! I’m going to have to start figuring out my outfit for this one!
Thanks so much for the link up!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Aw, Marsha, I love that! I have been a huge Seuss fan probably since I was first introduced to his books as a very young child. Another childhood favorite of mine is Shel Silverstein. I have a few of his poems committed to memory!
I am super excited that you will be playing along with our new music inspired series! This is going to be so much fun! And if you want to join us as a regular, just let me know! The more the merrier. And we are keeping it as it low stress as possible, too. This is all for fun and should not feel like ‘work’! I hope you have a fabulous weekend, my friend.

Love that you both are switching things up to something that is bring you more joy, and I’m sure everyone will love it, friend! It sounds really interesting and fun. 🙂 I loved reading your story behind the Dr. Suess book, those are good memories to have and I’m sorry you kiddos don’t have the same appreciation for it as you did.
Hope all is well with you, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Thanks so much, Ashley! I am really excited for this new style series! While my kids don’t appreciate my favorite book like I did, there are some great kid books they have loved over the years so I won’t let their disinterest in this one upset me too much. Haha. I hope you are enjoying the weekend, my friend!

Very nice. I still have “The Teddy Bears Picnic” book that I read to my kids for whenever I have grandkids. It is the Grateful Dead version-LOL.
Nancy had some style but I think that you have more. Thanks for hosting and I hope that your weekend was great.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Patrick! I think I need to imitate Nancy’s style for this challenge though! She did have some serious style game going on, didn’t she? I love that you have the Grateful Dead version of The Teddy Bears Picnic! Oh my gosh, last night I put on Grateful Dead LSD TV on YouTube because I really like the psychedelic graphics and Ralphie got so into it, he was grooving to the beat and then he got on his laptop and started making psychedelic art for me! Haha. I love my little Deadhead kids!

Shelbee,
I love that you are re-igniting a link party this way, while other bloggers are ‘dropping the ball,’ ‘hanging up their boots.’
I did not even now such a book by Dr Suess existed. Oh, fathers and their daughters! Right?
Love your creativity with this link up.
Thanks so much for the blog comments at ThExtraordinariOnly.
Cheering your on.

Ps. I thought I used to see badges of your link ups? If you could share them with me for the link-up post #84 that I have shared and still updating, that would be awesome!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Emma, thanks so much! I really appreciate that. We definitely needed a refresh of something new! Things start to get old and stagnant and people lose interest after so long. I think it is going to be a fun way to reignite some creativity!
I might have made a badge years ago, but I have not used one in probably 5 years. I don’t even think I remember how to create one now!
I hope you are having a magnificent week, my friend!
