Live Music in My Living Room & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up #165

“Music is the great uniter. An incredible force. Something that people who differ on everything and anything else can have in common.”

Sarah Dessen

Less than a month ago, I shared a post listing some of my favorite music festivals scheduled for this year. So much has changed since then, hasn’t it? And many of these festivals, in particular the ones in early spring have already been canceled. No one really knows at this point if festival season will happen at all. In the meantime, all of these wonderful musicians and their bands have lost their livelihood (just like many, many other people in the world right now), but they are making efforts to continue sharing their light and uplifting music with us right in our own living rooms.

Fireside Collective

All of my favorite bands have been live streaming their performances from their own living rooms so we can enjoy them from ours. I know this has certainly uplifted me and my family during this time of uncertainty. We spent Friday and Saturday night enjoying the new album just released this week by Fireside Collective. They shared two live streams to celebrate their new accomplishment. On Friday night, there was an album listening party where they played each track and then shared some stories with us about the recording of each one. On Satruday night, they gave us a live concert straight from their living room. My family and I had the best time watching, dancing, and singing along in our jammies.

The Jakobs Ferry Stragglers

The Jakobs Ferry Stragglers have also been sharing live music through social media streaming. While I missed their weekend performances (because I was tuned into Fireside Collective), I will be watching them during this week. Libby Eddy, the singer and fiddle player for JFS has been doing a live stream in the mornings, Coffee with Libby, where she is sharing her music and her contagiously bright personality to kick off these days of quarantine.

Lori Burke Music

From Libby’s live stream, she introduced me to Lori Burke Music who is live streaming sing alongs and music classes for kids. This Thursday from 10:00-10:30 a.m. you can join Lori’s Music Class here.

Abby Owens

Another favorite of mine is Abby Owens. She is also streaming her own live performances, bringing her angelic and haunting sound right into your living room.

If you miss the live streams, you can still view the performances later. Music has tremendous healing power as it can uplift and comfort us, bring us peace and joy and something to celebrate at a time when we may not feel like celebrating much of anything. It is important to not lose touch with our faith, our passion, our creativity, and the light that is contained within each and every one of us. We can not allow a dark world to extinguish our light. For that would just leave us all in complete darkness. So I am very grateful for those people who continue to shine their light and share their joy with us.

So go check out your favorite musicians on their social media channels and tune into some fun live streaming. And remember, if you can, do try to support them by dropping a few dollars into their virtual tip jars! Or you can help support your favorite musicians by purchasing their music and merchandise from their websites.

Again, I know many of us are financially stressed right now, so any kind of support we can offer each other is better than sitting in isolation and not utilizing the wonderful world of technology. It will keep us connected and fulfilled. And because of it, we will get through this together.

“Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife.”

Kahlil Gibran

“Music…will help dissolve your perplexities and purify your character and sensibilities, and in time of care and sorrow, will keep a fountain of joy alive in you.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

What have you been doing to keep your spirits alive and well?

And now your featured favorites from last week.

Interesting music collection, thank goodness for the internet, huh? Thanks so much for hosting! I’m linking up today with WEED APPRECIATION DAY and WHAT WAS IT? (ANIMAL PROMPT 75 WORDS).

Music can really heal people! I feel for all the musicians right now. I was so excited to see the SteelDrivers next week but that has been cancelled too. Hopefully we can move forward and start going to concerts again in the near future. Thanks for the link up Shelbee!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

I thought you might appreciate this post, Kathrine! There is definitely a strong healing power in music. I feel bad for everyone right now! So many people are out of work. And what a bummer about the Steel Drivers, too. Hopefully, it will be rescheduled in your area. Stay safe and healthy, my friend.

Music can really make a difference in your mood and how you feel! I love that some of these bands are streaming from their homes! Hopefully, we’ll be going to live concerts again soon!

Jill, thanks so much for reading and commenting! I am really enjoying bringing the live music right into my living room. I can totally dance a fool with no worries! Haha. I hope we will be back to attending live shows soon as well.

    Shelbee,

What a wonderful way to have a concert!
So many people are using the internet just like us to stay connected while staying at home.

    Hugs sweet friend from Atl!

Heehee! Thanks for the feature, my friend!

So many have lost their livelihoods during this quarentine. There was a really depressing article in the LA Times about the effect on the local restaurants, who are only allowed to offer takeout, which many cannot achieve.
I’d say many musicians have become quite resourceful with their live streaming, etc.
Here are a couple that I’ve found through FB friends:

Shelbee, great idea for new options on listening to music in a different way. Funny though, I may be the only person on the planet who doesn’t connect with music. I have a favorite genre but I just don’t listen to it much. Be well and I hope that you have a wonderful week.

Thanks so much, Rena! You know, I went through a long period of time where I rarely listened to music at all. Only when I was in the car. I have become much more in tune to it recently and it is bringing me both joy and comfort. I hope you are doing well!

I was talking to my girlfriend today about festival this year. Even if we can go to ours, in July, I don’t think it would be safe. Damn, what a boring summer this is going to be.

  • Patrick Weseman

So very true, we need our musicians and artists who make our lives brighter on a local level. I have been doing it myself.

Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week and I will be checking out the bands you have listed.

  • Katie

I totally agree that music is so important during difficult times like these. It’s also too bad that so many concerts are now canceled. We had tickets for the Rolling Stones, but it will probably be rescheduled. Thanks for sharing all of these suggestions for bands to listen to while at home and take care!

Music is special but even more so during a time like this. It helps uplift the spirit and brighten the mood. I don’t know what I would do without it. On another note, it’s really sad at how this pandemic has affected so many lives. Not only health wise but also financially. I hope you are staying safe and well!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Maureen, thank you so much! I agree with you completely. We need all sorts of uplifting things right now. Can you imagine if we didn’t have technology how terribly isolating this would all be? We are equipped with many wonderful things to help us cope so we would be silly not to take advantage of those things! Stay safe and healthy, my friend.

It’s so warming to see musicians, yoga studios, dance classes, etc pull together to give the global community access to free entrainment, only asking for donations to other good causes. Its hard to think of how long we all might be stuck for but even harder to come to terms with thousands losing their lives because we just can’t keep up to this virus. Stay healthy and safe and also sane.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Bo! As many awful things that we hear of human behaviors in times like these, there are also so many wonderful people in the world willing to step up and offer kindnesses at their own expense to make the world a better place. We are all in a state of uncertainty that can become very tense very quickly, so finding ways to deescalate that tension is so important. I hope this all passes quickly, but in the meantime, we have to keep sharing our light and kindness with the world. Stay safe!

Thanks, Lauren! Remember to take some time for yourself to catch your breath and relax so you don’t get completely overwhelmed by projects! I definitely have way less tim now with the kids home and homeschooling them. I am still trying to figure out how to manage my time. Stay safe, healthy, and sane, my friend!

We’ve been watching a lot of music via live streaming lately! We put it on our tv and enjoy it! It isn’t the same, but I appreciate the musicians sharing their work and love of music!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

I put it on the tv sometimes, too, Laura! It kind of makes it feel like you are sitting right in their living room where they are streaming from. It’s definitely not the same as being there live, but I am getting access to way more live shows than I could actually attend in person! I am super grateful for music and musicians sharing their joy with the world. We all need a little uplifting right now.

      xoxo

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Yes, Carrie, you do need some music! Although with both kids home, there is so much activity and noise around me, that I often turn the music off. But it’s probably playing 75% of the time! I have heard rumors here as well that we may not return to school this year. I hope that is not the case, but we will see. Hang in there, mama! Stay safe, healthy, and sane.

It’s really cool to see how many musicians have been streaming their music for free! There is hope for the world! Lol! Music is the great equalizer for us all. Thanks for sharing, Shelbee.

    xx Darlene

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Darlene, thanks so much! A musician needs to create music and they need to share it with the world! I am so grateful that they are streaming it for free. That’s why I have to do my little part to support them by sharing (I did put some money in their virtual tip jars, too)! If we all do just a little bit for each other, we will get through this thing much easier. Stay safe and healthy.

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Thanks so much, Cheryl! It is making me so sad that this thing is going to run into the summer. I guess if we all do our own little bit to support others, we can get through this thing together. Stay safe and healthy!

I think this is a wonderful idea, Shelbee! It’s extra fun, too, because they’re sharing a bit about themselves and it’s probably not as “canned” as the concerts can be. Music is such a mood elevator, too, as is dancing (and a great form of exercise). I do know that the crowds, though, add a lot of fun to actually being at a concert and I’m sorry you’re having to give up your fun lineup of concerts in person. Keep the great ideas coming for us to keep ourselves amused, though. I’m sure after a couple of more weeks we’ll be relying on others’ suggestions to keep us from going Jack Nicholson (The Shining) on everybody. And thank you so much for another great linkup!

Ruth, thanks so much! I will definitely keep sharing the things that I am finding to entertain us during this time of quarantine. I am seeing so many people posting live videos on social media from musical performances to reading children’s books and other book readings. Of course, there are all sorts of workout and exercise videos, too. We have been doing yoga and have now started watching karate workouts with the kids so they can keep practicing. Maybe we will watch The Shining this weekend! My children love horror. The little weirdos!

Glad to be reminded of music. I used to love spinning record albums on my Sears record player. And then I grew up and LIFE. The other day, instead of listening to a book on Audible, I switched on the radio while running errands. It was so uplifting. I need to do that more often.

Anne’s take on your lumberjack look is adorable. It is fun to see how your styled the plaid flannel and then see Anne’s spin. Gail is one of my favorite bloggers. Thanks for sharing her post on working from home.

    Off to listen to Spotify!

    • shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com

Leslie, thanks so much! I had to laugh that you stopped spinning records because you grew up! There is no time line on how long we can enjoy music! Although I went through a long period of time where I only listened to music if I was in my car. Now I have it playing almost constantly because it brings me so much joy! I am glad you are rediscovering the power of music and your love for it. And I am also happy that you enjoyed my featured favorites.

I am totally surprised that my post was the most clicked!

Cool about all the musicians continuing to brighten the world during this challenging time. Another you might enjoy via FB is Antsy McClain. In fact, yesterday, I shared his post of him performing his newest song, “Binge-watching Our Way to Armageddon.” Yes a lot of his songs have a humorous viewpoint. One of the reasons we enjoy him so much.

And on St. Patrick’s Day, we watched the free concert performed by the Dropkick Murphy’s in their hometown of Boston. If you’re not familiar, it’s kind of Irish Punk music. Not one of my go-to music genres, but I appreciated that they were doing the concert, and their message that we are all in this together.

    Hugs from afar, my friend!

Michelle, thank you so much for sharing your current music watch list! I am going to check some of those out. Last night, Jeff and I got totally sucked into a few recorded live shows from Here Come the Mummies. This is band is ridiculously talented…mind blowing, in fact. Sending virtual hugs right back to you, my friend.
