About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
This Week’s Presenter
Terri chose this round’s artwork. Nearing the end of her time as a co-host for SIA, she wanted to present an artwork that is important to her but also has design capabilities for sartorial styling. She also has been committed to sharing art from one of her lifelong happy places, the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City.
In Terri’s own words: “Wayne Thiebaud’s Jawbreaker Machine has greeted me for the fifty-odd years that I have been going to the Nelson. This painting was my first introduction to Thiebaud. It even inspired a kindergarten art project that I did for quite a few years. It’s happy, very colorful, and very summery.”
The Artwork
Jawbreaker Machine by Wayne Thiebaud
This 1963 oil on canvas features a jawbreaker machine filled with colorful round candies against a white background and placed on a yellow plane which is defined by an orange, green, and yellow line across the top and a red, blue, and yellow line at the bottom border.
It really does have some very lovely pigments for creating a summery style and I think I have the perfect thing for this challenge! If only the rain would go away…

Oh I love this style. Makes me think of my favourite Dutch painter Tjalf Spanraay.

I am not familiar with that Dutch artist but now I need to go check him out! I love this style of painting, too. It creates all the vintage nostalgic feels for me. And I do love gumball machines! I had one when I was younger but the glass dome broke when I was in college and that was the end of my beloved red gumball machine.

Oh what a fun one!!! I planned an art lesson around Thiebaud too, for my son last year. We loved studying his work and experimenting with oil pastels! I am sure this piece will inspire many fun outfits!
