Inspired by Style Nudge: Camouflage, Denim, and Red
My obsession with camouflage dates back to some time in the early 1980’s when one of my oldest sister’s friends crafted her own prom dress out of this military designed pattern. There was something fascinating to me about the paradox between a print that is associated with combat, war, and soldiers combined with something so feminine and romantic such as a prom gown. And for 30 years, I have been searching fruitlessly for a dress like hers. Despite never finding what I was looking for, my adoration for camo print partnered with things of a more feminine nature continues from my childhood well into midlife.

*Jacket: Plus Size Flap Pockets Hooded Camouflage Coat c/o Zaful.
When I saw Cherie of Style Nudge showcase a tiered camouflage skirt this past summer in her post Au Courant On Camo, those old camo butterflies began fluttering around my heart again.
I realized that my wardrobe was lacking in camouflage pieces. I don’t know why this is, but I am working on a remedy (a.k.a. shopping for more camouflage pieces). When I saw this camo jacket from Zaful, I knew that I wanted to create a similar pairing as Cherie with faded denim and red but also with an element of romance and femininity.
Another style paradox that really catches my fancy is distressed boyfriend jeans paired with killer heels. It’s sassy, it’s sexy, it’s fun, and it’s unexpected. Cherie often wears a similar pairing as well. She has one enviable shoe collection, for sure. (Check out her Shoe and Tell Link Up every Monday). And her denim is always spot on, too! (Head over and visit this post. And this one. And this one.) I just happened to have these red suede pumps calling from my closet to be worn with edgy patterned socks. Paired with my newest distressed boyfriend jeans, my red hat from DSW, and my little black tee (similar here), I sort of flipped Cherie’s outfit upside down!
Now back to my search for the most feminine and elegant of wardrobe pieces in camouflage! And a huge thank you to Cherie for inspiring me!
Have you ever searched for 30 years for something you remember fondly from childhood? Or am I just total weirdo?! By the way, who has inspired you lately? I would love to hear from you.
Keeping it on the edge,
Shelbee

Oh Shelbee, What a nice thing to come home to!!!! I’ve been away from the blog world for the last week and woke up this morning to find your post. Thank you for the feature and I’m flattered that I inspired your camo look. Love how you say you flipped my look upside down, and you really did. Love the red touches and the distressed jeans. This outfit is SO good, Shelbee! I like that you found a longer camo jacket – all the oness I’ve seen have been short. Cherie is one of my favorite style bloggers, too. She can seriously do no wrong.

Not clothing but about ten years ago I was searching for a movie “Absolute Beginners” on DVD. It is a truly horrible movie but the music is so awesome (David Bowie, The Style Council, Ray Davies from the Kinks, Sade) took me about a year to find it. Recently, I was looking for a song ” 75 Seasons Suite” an instrumental piece by composer Tom Hedden. I already had bought the three-minute version off of Amazon but I wanted the 12-minute version. I looked and looked, contacted Tom Hedden myself and I ended up buying a 12-CD disk that cost me like $80 that it was on.
I guess this proves that I am totally tweeked upstairs.
Glad you found your Camo jacket.

Patrick, I cannot tell you how much I love this story! And I think that the more tweeked upstairs we are, the more fascinating we appear to others! You fascinate me, my friend! Thank you for that!

I love this outfit, the coat is super cute. I also love the pop of red with the hat. Personally, I never really liked camo, maybe it was because my dad was in the Army and I immediately associate it with him. *shrugs* However, this is such a stylish touch and this post really made reconsider my stance on camo.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Gigi, thanks so much! There have certainly been times when I have been sick of camo being an Army wife, so I get it…although it sounds like yours is more of a distasteful association while mine was just overkill. Perhaps, it would be therapeutic in a way to rock out some camo in protest!

Just DARLING!! I think your beaming face reveals your delight with the look you’ve achieved here! Though it’s a casual look it’s well thought out just as Cherie’s inspiration outfit is.
Camo has been a popular fashion print for almost as long as leopard print, so clearly it’s worth the investment! I have several items in camo but only a couple leopard print items!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Jude, thank you so much for this wonderful compliment! I love that you spoke of camo and leopard because Cherie recently styled an outfit that combined those two prints and it was brilliant! I took inspiration from that for my outfit from the post Strong Like Me where I once again flipped Cherie’s look upside down. She wore camo booties with a leopard coat and I wore leopard booties with a camo wrap.

You know what’s funny? When I got out of the Army, I swore I’d never wear camo again. Now I absolutely love it. Especially with girly pieces and soft colors. However, that red is calling my name. I absolutely adore the color combination. Just fun.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Daenel, I definitely have gone through phases were I was sick of camo, being an Army wife and all the wives jump on the camo everything bandwagon! But now I am back to really loving it. But it has to be this old jungle camo. The new digital stuff I don’t like at all. That one can stay on uniforms! Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting.
