Inspired by Mom With Style: Giving Shape to a Shapeless Dress
I love when outfit inspiration hits me while browsing my favorite blogs over my morning coffee. Just last week, I found inspiration that I really needed from Mel of Mom with Style in her post, How to Become a Hat Person + WW Linkup. She showcased this gorgeous dark green maxi dress with a denim shirt and summer hat.
While I do not have a maxi dress exactly like Mel’s, I have had this black and white leaf print long shift dress hanging in my closet unworn since last summer. I snagged it on clearance from Target at the end of the season last year for around $10. It was super comfortable and the price was right and in typical Shelbee fashion I paid no mind to how exactly I was going to style this very shapeless dress. I figured the worst case scenario was that I would just wear it as loungewear. And yet, it remained unworn. Until I saw Mel with her denim shirt tied around the waist of her maxi dress.

For a moment, I was thinking I needed to get a dress just like Mel’s gorgeous green maxi and replicate her outfit exactly. But then I checked myself knowing full well that I have an over abundance of dresses hanging in my closet already. Right then, I had an A-HA moment and remembered this dress. Tying a denim shirt around the waist was exactly the styling trick it needed to give it a bit of shape as well as a bit of edge.
I added my Shoe Dazzle black gladiator sandals instead of cute wedges like Mel’s…but I can certainly change up the shoes the next time around. And of course, Mel’s post was all about the hat. So I grabbed my favorite summer hat (also from Target last year) and it was the perfect accessory. Plus summer hats is the theme for July’s Good Buy/Good-Bye Book. Be sure to get your hat submissions in by July 10 to be featured in that fun series!
Thanks so much, Mel, for inspiring me and providing a simple styling solution for this shapeless dress!
Who has inspired you lately? I would love to hear all about it!
Keeping it on the edge,

Doesn’t it make such a difference by adding one little item! Looking gorgeous as ever Shelbee. Jacqui Mummabstylish

Thanks so much, Jacqui. It really does make all the difference. The dress was about to be a loss and all it took was tying a shirt around the waist to save it!

One of the reasons I love blogs waaaaay more than magazines is the inspiration I find from other real women! The best part is putting our own spin on what inspires us just like you did. You look fabulous as always my friend!

Kellyann, I am right with you on that! I love when someone else gives me a styling idea and I can take it and make it my own! And while my look was inspired by Mel’s, it is still completely different and totally my own. Thanks so much for the lovely compliment, my friend.

This is a fabulous solution! I personally love loose fitting clothes. Not too much I am swimming in them but enough to be comfortable. I love this idea better than wearing a belt as it is more relaxed. Love this look Shelbee and cute hair!

Thanks, Maureen! I agree with you about belts. Sometimes they are just too formal or something. And they get all flumped up when you sit down and I find I am constantly adjusting them when I belt a dress. This was way easier, more casual, and didn’t require much adjusting at all throughout the day. (And I totally just made up that word “flumped”.)

Thanks so much, Jodie! Sometimes it is the simplest styling solutions and we just never think of them. It takes another fashion loving friend to remind us. I can’t wait to see your gladiator sandals!

I’ve been trying to wear hats more often because I think they have a nice way of adding fun and spunkiness to an outfit. There’s just something so creative and revealing about the hats people choose to wear and I like the aspect of people’s personality that is revealed in their “hattitude”!

Jude, I totally agree…and I think hats add a bit of mystique to the person wearing them, too. I wrote a post last summer about what a hat can tell about a person…The Message Beneath Your Hat: The Transformative Powers of Headwear with Rosegal. Hey and I am wearing a kimono in that post! Just a girl and her kimonos.

Thanks so much, Molly! Now that my hair is long enough for pigtails, I wear them nearly every day! I just love them.

Oh my gosh Shelbee… you are killing it! A denim top tied against your waist always flatters your look!! You made your “house dress” into the prefect summer maxi look. And I am the same way, I love reading blogs to get some fashion inspiration and making it my own 😉 I find it more relatable than magazines!
