How to Style a Kimono 2 Ways &#SpreadTheKindness Link Up #169
My well of inspiration is running dry these days spent in lockdown mode. Since I draw my inspiration and motivation from human connections and my experiences in the world, it was only a matter of time before I ran out of things to say and topics to discuss that I haven’t already discussed a million times over. I have been digging through my old journals and finding lots of gems in there that have inspired a few pieces of writing, the most recent being Sunday’s post, Sunday Sillies: The Diarrhea Song. As much as I enjoy potty humor, it is not always appropriate and it can get tiresome very quickly. So let me shift gears to a good ole basic fashion post.
If you know me at all, you know how I love a good kimono. Any kimono will do but I have a preference for longer ones as well as more dramatic ones. This velvet burnout kimono seemed to be perfect for the transitional season. You get the easy flow for a warm weather vibe combined with a heavier fabric because the warm weather has not yet arrived.
I took these photos about 6 weeks ago when there was still snow on the ground in Northern New York. While the ground is no longer snow-covered, the temperatures have not been much warmer than they were in the beginning of March. It is still really gosh darned cold here with temperatures hanging around 35-50 degrees during the day and dropping back into the 20’s at night. I do believe these are the last of my snowy photos for the season, but you will still see me wearing layers and blanket scarves and cozy hats at least for the next few weeks. We won’t experience that sweet spot of 65 to 75 degrees until the middle of May at the earliest. If we are lucky! It did snow during the first week of June last year, so I don’t get all that optimistic any more.
But I digress. The weather is a rather boring topic, but it seems to be the only thing I have to discuss at the moment! Ah, but that is not at all true. I have the topic of styling a kimono 2 ways to share. This post idea sort of happened by accident. I initially styled my kimono over a black sleeveless dress layered over a long sleeve tee shirt, added matching tights, funky clog-like shoes, and a moto jacket and dashed off to the park to take some photos. I got so much snow inside my shoes, I don’t even know how I am smiling. Despite my poor choice of shoes for the weather, I still think they were the perfect choice of shoes for the outfit.
I have been shopping my closet much more often recently as I am trying not to spend so much damn money on clothes. I am also focused more on pre-loved items these days than acquiring brand new fast fashion pieces. We need to be more considerate of the environment and buying pre-loved clothing is one great way to do that. With tomorrow being Earth Day, now is a great time to shift your shopping habits as well. You can find some really amazing pre-loved items either in local thrift or consignment shops or the multitude of online resale sites like Poshmark. My dress and earrings are the only thrifted items I am wearing here, but everything else has been hanging around my closet for quite a while.
Now for the styling part…If I wear a kimono over a dress, I try to choose a dress that defines my waistline and has a bit of structure to counterbalance the inherently less structured nature of the flowing kimono. A kimono over a loose fitting dress has a tendency to add way too much volume to be flattering on my frame. You can solve that issue by adding a belt over either the dress or the kimono to taper in at your waist. Or simply opt for an A-line skater style dress with a defined waist like the one I am wearing.
Upon returning home after taking these photos, I found myself shivering like mad and my tights were just not keeping me warm. The fact that my feet were also immersed in the snow didn’t help either. So I quickly changed into jeans in preparation to spend the day sitting at my desk…warm and comfortable. But then I liked the kimono with my slouchy ripped denim so much that I headed out to the driveway to get some photos of it. This is where the idea for this styling post was born.
All elements of the original outfit are exactly the same except I ditched the dress and replaced my tights with velvet ankle socks in the same color and my favorite, most comfortable pair of jeans. The tee shirt is the same one that I had layered underneath my dress.
I have also styled this exact kimono over cut off shorts, a tunic, and ankle booties in an outfit that was inspired by my fave boho icon, Debbie of Fashion Fairy Dust. You can see that outfit here in a post from nearly 2 years ago, which helps to further illustrate the versatility and staying power of a fabulous kimono. You really cannot go wrong by throwing on a kimono with just about any outfit combination. It adds interest, drama, elegance, and maybe even a little bit of funk to a plain old outfit.

I am going to try to shop more on Poshmark in the next few months: I have seen several things I would like on Meg (Pixie and curls) shop that I am going to get. I figure it is a good way to buy 2nd hand and helping a fellow Instafriend! Going to see what I can find kimono wise too. Just ordered one from Amazon but really need to get away from shopping there. Love these 2 outfits! I agree with you, those shoes are perfect for that kimono and those outfits. I decided that I need to wear my least worn shirts over the next 10 days. I have been wearing my graphic tees a lot lately but my other tops need to see the light of the day too.

Thanks, Mireille! You know, I need to start shopping more on Poshmark, too. I also need to start listing more! I have about 12 giant trash bags filled with clothes to sell. Ugh. I got a really cute kimono on Poshmark a few years ago. It was actually a silk robe, but I wear it has a kimono so be sure to check the sleepwear categories, too! I look forward to seeing what you find!

Both are such great looks! Love the burgundy colors and floral pattern on the kimono! I don’t own one but been thinking about getting one to use as a layering piece in summer. I think many of them are thin enough for that, but I’ve never even tried one on, so no idea if I would like the look on me.
We had about 6 inches of snow just a few days ago, my daughter went outside to build a snowman because the snow was so perfect for it. But it only lasted one day and now we’re back to pretty sunshine. Still chilly tough but very spring like.
Hope you and your family are doing well!
Thanks for the linkup!

Thanks so much, Ellie! If you get a kimono and don’t like the way it looks just plain, you can always belt it or tie it in the front. There are lots of ways to play around to get the fit right for you. It snowed here on Friday like a blizzard for a few hours, then it all melted! Hopefully, it warms up soon!

Hi Shelbee
I am a big fan of this kimono on you! I love the velvet and the colors are one of my favorite combos- the black and burgundy. I love the tights with the black dress and your boyfriend jeans look so comfy and worn, I love that kind of jean look. Also fab with the burgundy socks and clogs. I am dying to wear some of my new clothes out and about– who knows what that will look like when we can. Those sunnies are just so perfect with this look!
Enjoy the week!

Looking very lovely and stylish. Love how you styled it both ways. The first one looks more sophisticated while the second one is more casual.
You have a well of inspiration that you have not tapped it yet, just like all of us. This is something that we are learning to break our own barriers. God, I am sounding like one of those speakers.
Thanks for hosting and I hope that you and your family are safe and healthy.

Thanks so much, Patrick! You are getting very sophisticated with your fashion comments! And I am sorry, but your “break our barriers” comment reminded me of that video about breaking the barrier…watch it…you will laugh! The colours on your kimono are amazing. Love them. Everyone in NZ seems to wear Bali kimonos (if they wear any) and the colours just aren’t the same (sigh). Ok: absolutely love the kimono jeans outfit, and shoes. I don’t wear kimonos because for some reason (being short and a bit tubby, perchance?) they simply are unflattering on me. (1st world problem)
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Ratnamurti, thank you so much, my friend! I don’t think I know what a Bali kimono is so I will have to look that up. Kimonos can be more difficult to style when you are petite, but I think if you choose a shorter one that hits at your waist, you may be able to pull it off. But you may have already tried that so my suggestion could be rather pointless! I hope you are having a great week!

Oh I love the velvet in that kimono! It’s so pretty and adds some glam to both of your outfits!

I love a good kimono, but I truly love a clog sandal—yours are perfect! And OMG, did it snow again there?!
Cheryl Shops | http://www.cherylshops.net
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thank you, Cheryl! I cannot remember where I got these shoes. It was some online shop that had terrible reviews which I didn’t read until after I ordered 3 pairs of shoes. Everything arrived and was good but I think the site then disappeared! Haha. So strange. And I took these photos in the beginning of March so all that snow is gone. It did snow again yesterday, but with no accumulation. I am so ready for some warm weather.

Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom
I just love kimonos and there seems to be so many ways to style them. My favorite look is the one with the dress and you are so right, a fitted waist or just a dress that is more fitting really works well with the loose shape of a kimono. I love the burgundy tights, they go well with tying in some of the colors on the kimono.

Carrie, thank you so much! My all time favorite way to wear kimonos is with jean shorts, but darn it, it is still just too cold. It snowed again yesterday! Give me sunshine and all the kimonos!

It is a real thing, Jodie! I experience it every time I see one! I just can’t get enough! I would really love a long all velvet one for winter. How dramatic and sassy that would be! Debbie of Fashion Fairy Dust has some long velvet ones that I swoon over every time she shows them. And cheers to pushing yourself with your styling choices. You are such a great example of the wonderful results that come from doing that!

I need a new kimono as mine is too big – they are a fab alternative to cardigans or jackets. Thanks for sharing your lovely outfit. Jacqui x
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks for stopping by, Jacqui! I always need a new kimono! I have some that are too big and I can sometimes make them work by belting them. I don’t know if that will work for you, but it may be worth a try!

I love kimonos too! I like how they flow with every move and add a bit of mystique to a look. You styled your kimono very well and I do find myself attracted to your shoes! Very pretty, indeed. I am sorry it’s still so cold there. We are in the 80s and I am thinking about hibernating for the season as I am not a fan of hot weather. But in the grand scheme of things, I can’t complain especially with the state of the world today. I hope you and your family are staying safe and well. Happy Wednesday!

Thank you, Maureen! I love the drama of a kimono, too! I haven’t been wearing my kimonos much since I am just sitting around the house. I am not a fan of hot weather either, but I do love that sweet spot of 65-75. I feel like we won’t get those temperatures until June. I hope you are staying safe, healthy, sane, and not too hot!
