“Gosh! Do I Look as Old as All That!” by Dr. Seuss | Style Imitating Art

It’s my turn!

About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and Marsha of Marsha in the Middle. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag SalazarShelbee, or Marsha or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

This Week’s Presenter

With my 50th birthday only 17 days away, I chose this awesome painting by the beloved Dr. Seuss called, “Gosh! Do I Look As Old As All That!”. This piece is part of Seuss’s La Jolla Birdwomen series, a special collection of eleven known paintings that were inspired by the society women in La Jolla, California. It seemed like a perfect choice to represent my upcoming milestone birthday.

The Artwork
“Gosh! Do I Look As Old As All That!” by Dr. Seuss
Ink and Watercolor, 1961

I chose the painting without first consulting my wardrobe and found myself pretty fairly stumped for ideas. Then on Saturday, I was taking photographs for my upcoming Thrifty Six post when I quickly realized that the skirt I was wearing was a great representation of Dr. Seuss’s old birdwoman so I promptly styled a new outfit with the same skirt. But as I was styling the new outfit, I spotted a dress hanging in my closet that completely captured the entire essence of the painting in one garment. So I photographed that outfit as well. Now I have to decide which one to share for next week’s SIA outfit post. Or maybe I will just share both. Stay tuned!

If you are feeling inspired to join us, go get creative in your closet, snap a photo of your outfit, and send it to me at shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, and I will feature your photo in my gallery post on Wednesday, May 22, 2024. We would love to see more creative folks join our artsy challenges!

Happy styling, my friends!

Do you really not know who Dr. Seuss is?! I thought he was internationally known with his books being translated into more than 20 languages. He is so silly and very inspiring! Oh Nancy, you will love him!

What a fabulous piece of art! I love the colours! So funny that you didn’t think you had anything in your wardrobe and then discovered two outfits! I shall look forward to seeing them both at some stage lol!
I’m still not quite ready to recommence SIA yet. It’s so awkward taking outfit photos with the builders right next door lol. But I’m looking forward to getting stuck in again when we move in later this year (fingers crossed!).
And it’s your big birthday in a couple of weeks?! That’s awesome!! I hope you have something super fun planned, Shelbee!!
    Huge hugs

Thank you, thank you, thank you, dear Suzy! I was going to plan something special for my birthday but I lost interest with all the house repairs. Plus we have a few festivals that we are going to this summer so I will just celebrate all summer long when we go to the places we have already planned! I bet you are so excited to get moved into the new house soon!
