About Style Imitating Art

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.

You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag SalazarTerri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!

This Week’s Presenter

Salazar chose this week’s art because she has always loved travel posters and she likes the warm colors and strong, graphic lines of this one for interpreting into a cold weather outfit. You can read more about why she chose this piece here

The Artwork
Fifty-Nine Parks Print Series: Grand Canyon National Park by DKNG Studios
Poster Print produced by The National Poster Retrospecticus, 2017

For this week’s challenge, Salazar chose a vintage inspired poster produced by The National Poster Retrospecticus for The Fifty-Nine Parks Print Series. This was a really cool initiative in 2017 by a group of nature loving artists and designers to promote the beauty and diversity of America’s beloved National Parks. Dan Kuhlken and Nathan Goldman of DKNG Studios created the artwork for The Grand Canyon National Park poster.

To see more posters from this series, check out this 2017 article from My Modern Net. I love the gorgeous shades of purples, oranges, and yellows in this graphic and already have some styling ideas in mind. But my very favorite of this poster series is, of course, the one for The Great Smoky Mountains National Park by artist Chris Turnham.

I had to share that one even though it is not our inspiration. It is just such a beautiful depiction of my favorite place on earth!

If you are feeling inspired to create your own outfit inspired by the Grand Canyon National Park poster and you want to be featured in Salazar’s review post on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, please be sure to submit your photos to 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.

Happy styling!

Keeping it on the edge,

Shelbee
