“At the Risk of the Sun” by Yves Tanguy | Style Imitating Art
Next up for Style Imitating Art…
About Style Imitating Art
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Terri of Meadow Tree Style, and Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday, one of the hosts, acting as presenter, selects an inspiration image that they will each post on their blogs. The following Monday, each host shares her art inspired outfit. Participants are invited to submit their art inspired outfits to the presenter by 10:00 p.m. EST on the Tuesday following the hosts’ art inspired outfit posts. The following day, Wednesday, the presenter will share all of the submissions on her blog.
You don’t have to be a blogger to join either! In fact, you don’t even have to join but you can still use the art to inspire an outfit just for the sake of trying something different. If you want to share your inspired outfit, we invite you do so on Instagram or any other social media platform that you prefer. Just be sure to tag Salazar, Terri, and Shelbee or use #TeamLOTSStyle and #StyleImitatingArt so the hosts know you have joined. Go have some fun in your closets and join the SIA challenge next week!
This Week’s Presenter
Terri chose this round’s artwork, another one of her all time favorite paintings from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and one of her first introductions to Surrealism. Terri says about the painting, “It’s not a large painting but I think its vistas are vast. Tanguy was inspired to paint after seeing some of De Chirco’s work but I think he definitely went his own route. I know it is muted and has a limited color pallet, but hopefully, the metallics will get to have their time in the sun.”
The Artwork
“At the Risk of the Sun” by Yves Tanguy
“At the Risk of the Sun” by French Surrealist painter Yves Tanguy is a small oil on canvas from 1947.
Well, it is definitely a Surrealist painting with its metallic melting forms. I am not sure exactly what I am looking at, but I see a girl in red beret with a matching backpack gazing in loving wonder (see the heart in front of her face) at a sculpture of an elephant with an angel on its head. The Nelson-Atkins sees this…
“Strange, organic forms appear in this dramatically illuminated, desolate landscape. A heart form can be seen on the right. To the left is an imaginative array of stacked shapes, referencing parts of human and animal bodies. Yves Tanguy and other Surrealist artists sought to reveal the contents of the unconscious mind. Inspired by Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theories, they depicted images from their dreams, nightmares, and memories. Tanguy based this image on the prehistoric stone monuments he saw as a child in Brittany, France.”

As for styling an outfit inspired by this painting, I am thoroughly stumped!

Oh my gosh, Marsha, you are so funny! I would love to see an aluminum foil dress! I thought this was going to be really hard, but when I went in my closet room it all came together pretty perfectly! Hint…I went with marled grays instead metallics.
