Adventures in Thrifting Part 16: Bohemian Maxi Skirt with Suede Ankle Boots & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #719
Lacking in content last week, I decided to resurrect my Adventures in Thrifting series after putting it to rest two and a half years ago. In this randomly unscheduled series, I highlight one or a few preloved items that have made their way into my wardrobe. Many of my favorite clothing items were either purchased secondhand or preloved by someone else who passed them onto me. Because these thrifty finds are budget-friendly and environmentally-conscious, I seem to cherish them a little bit more than brand new items purchased at retail. Secondhand finds are just more special!
Since last week’s revival of my Adventures in Thrifting was met with positivity and I am lacking content once again, this post is all about my preloved bohemian maxi skirt and tan suede ankle boots.
Shortly after acquiring this knit skirt on a thrifting adventure about two years ago, I styled it with a preloved striped duster for a Thrifty Six challenge, We Are Not Angry Birds. Last summer, I wore it with a tie dye kimono for some Weekend Fun at Stony Fork Music Festival and it was perfect for the summer heat. It is a mid-weight knit fabric which is easy to style in any season. With a price tag of $6, I have definitely gotten my money’s worth from this funky skirt and will continue to wear for years to come.
For a summer to fall transitional outfit, I paired the long skirt with secondhand tan ankle boots. I purchased these Matt Bernson mens’ boots on Poshmark four years ago and wear them often. They are constructed from a super soft suede and the flat sole is supportive and comfortable. They were in “like new” condition when I purchased them for $25. I can’t find much about this footwear brand except their boots retail for around $125-200, making $25 a really good bargain. These boots have taken me from summertime in the North Country, paired with a little white dress, to autumn in the Smoky Mountains, worn with fall layers. These boots are so good that if I had spent the retail price I would still be satisfied with my purchase.
While my poncho is not a thrifted item, it has been around for at least eight years. I wore it over a black dress back in 2016 when I went to Anne’s Fashion Rainbow art exhibit in Los Angeles. I do have a habit of holding onto clothing for a really long time, especially unique pieces that I know I’ll never find the likes of again. The abstract print on this poncho really appeals to me and continues to work with many things in my wardrobe nearly a decade after purchasing it. If you are not an avid thrifter but want a more sustainable wardrobe, taking proper care of your clothing so you can continue wearing it year after year is another great way to achieve that goal. Fast fashion isn’t as fast if we don’t throw it away after one season’s wear.
I do have quite a lot of preloved accessories in my collection, however, the majority was purchased new, generally as souvenirs from my travels, or gifted to me. None of the accessories worn with this outfit were preloved but all are in constant rotation and much loved by me. You have seen it all here many times before including my red hat, my Shelbee mala beads, my black caged crystal necklace, my choker by Michal Golan, and my large feather earrings.
I really liked the comfort level and the bohemian vibes of this outfit as well as the deep red color palette as we are starting to catch glimpses of the coming autumn season.
Here is the skirt styled three different ways.
And the poncho styled two ways.
Are you feeling the seasonal transition where you live yet?

Oh I love boots under maxi skirts. That’s a very pretty skirt too. I was just thinking of packing my boots to Rye this Sunday, but it’s actually getting really warm, can you believe it! In fact it will be very warm when we return, so I’ve decided to celebrate my birthday with a bbq! For the first time in 10 years or so.

Thanks so much, Nancy! Is it your birthday weekend this weekend?! Why do I not know what day your birthday is? I hope you have a wonderful trip to Rye! I look forward to hearing all about it on our next Zoom!

Thanks so much, Melynda! Boots are my favorite style of footwear, for sure! I wear some kind of boots almost daily from fall through spring!

I love this outfit! I would estimate that about half the items in my closet have been thrifted. It’s a great way to find unique items or try a style that I may be unsure about it. If it doesn’t work, I haven’t invested much in it, and can pass it along.

Thank you, Michelle! I would say my closet is about 1/3 thrifted. Because I do still get tempted by all the pretty new things in stores! Although that temptation is getting less and less as the years pass by. I hope you have a most wonderful weekend, my friend!

Love this as a late summer/early fall transition outfit! That poncho has a gorgeous print so I hope it continues to serve you well for many years.

Thanks, Sally! I love making my clothing work for decades! All styles come back around and we live in an era of anything-goes so holding onto stuff makes so much sense to me. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Glad you decided to revive this series, Shelbee! Love your patterned thrifted skirt, it fits so well into your BoHo style. Also what a great pattern mix this is! I don’t have any decent thrift outlets, and only one consignment shop near where I live, and am so glad I have held onto things from the past. I also cherish these things much more than current purchases. Hope you have a great weekend and thanks for sharing!

Di, thanks so much! I do feel fortunate to have a bunch of really great secondhand shops in my area. I don’t even really shop retail very much these days except the occasional end of season sales at a few favorite stores. I also enjoy thrift shops when I travel to other places. Different geographical areas tend to yield very different styles which is fun and interesting. I hope you have a lovely weekend!

That skirt is so pretty and quite versatile. We are feeling cooler weather… but I don’t think it’s here to stay yet (even though the trees seem to think this is it and have already started turning colors). Thank you so much for featuring my post!

Thnaks, Joanne! Skirts are probably my least favorite garment classification but I do have a few that I love to wear! We had a really nice cool spell this week and now it looks like it will be hanging in the 70s for the next 10 days or so. I am definitely not going to complain about that! Have a wonderful weekend!

Great idea to revisit thrifted finds for new content. Most of my latest finds have been thrifted but it’s probaby too soon to talk about them again. I love the skirt – I think skirts are my favorite!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Gail! I actually don’t wear skirts very often so when I do buy them, I prefer to shop secondhand. It’s fun to find the unique pieces among the racks and racks of unwanted stuff!

I really like the unexpected pattern combo! I feel like my wardrobe now is probably 50/50 thrifted and retail, with a lot of pieces from Tjmaxx. The majority of my dresses are thrifted as I feel like I found the best ones then.

Thanks so much, Mireille! Dresses are my favorite thing to look for in thrift shops because I don’t have to try them on and they are easiest to alter or upcycle. I would love to get my wardrobe to 50/50 but I feel like 30% thrifted is where I have been for years!

I am loving this series, Shelbee! While I don’t thrift, I do love seeing what others uncover in their treasure hunts! You seem to find the best boho inspired items and combine them to make them truly unique and interesting! Love this pretty look!

Thanks so much, Marsha! I do love thrifting and sharing my fun finds. I think I might be due for another thrifting adventure soon. It has been months since I have visited any thrift shops!
