Adventures in Thrifting Part 14: White Zara Apron Dress & Link Up On the Edge #274
Back in September, I found two supremely adorable Zara apron dresses on one of my thrifting adventures. The first one I shared was a blue floral print apron dress styled in a very similar way to this white one with a black turtleneck and black chunky boots. I actually styled and photographed this white one first and I liked the layering trick so much that I stuck with it for both dresses. It is the perfect way to take a sleeveless sundress into the colder months.
This dress is a very heavy cotton twill material also making it versatile for multiple season wear. The blue floral one is lighter weight so better for milder temperatures.
I have always been a fan of a classic black and white combination and I figured the abundance of white fabric really did need a stark contrast if I were layering things with this dress. I suppose it would look just as cute layered with a bold vibrant primary color or a soft shade of pastel as well. Both dresses look incredibly adorable with nothing layered underneath, too, so I am looking forward to trying them out in the spring and summer. I had purchased them too late in the season to wear them sleeveless.
I was unsure of how this giant circle cut dress would look on me. This much fabric in one big floof from bosom to ankles has the potential to overwhelm any frame and add the appearance of girth that may not exist. Nobody wants extra girth. Well, I know I don’t. But when I put on the dress, I was pleasantly surprised that it is not too girthy after all. My favorite thing about the dress though is the giant patch pockets at the hips. Who doesn’t love big pockets on a big dress?
As for the rest of my outfit, I stuck with the basics. A fitted black turtleneck which I recently picked up from Charlotte Russe. Actually, I had been searching for the past 2 seasons for fitted turtlenecks and couldn’t find anything I liked. You all know how cold I get in the winter time and these turtlenecks are the absolute best for keeping me warm underneath my clothes. This season Charlotte Russe carried a few different styles and colors and I snatched up about 5 or 6 new ones for under $10 each. I tried to find a link for them but their online store carries much less than you can find in a physical location.
I kept all the other things black as well from my ever present fingerless gloves that I wear from September until June to help mitigate the symptoms of my Raynaud’s syndrome to my new black Doc Martens that make my legs so tired that I feel like I ran a marathon. Black tights and socks were added to keep my underparts sheltered from the chilly gusts of wind. Tiny little pearly stone bead earrings are the only jewelry I chose with this outfit although I am thinking I probably should have worn some kind of necklace as well. Maybe next time!
That’s all I have for you today…few words and a pile of photos. I have been struggling since we turned the clocks back a month ago. It has set me into this weird schedule of waking up between 2:30 and 4:00 every morning which is leaving me completely wrecked by 3:00 in the afternoon. I can’t seem to get out of the cycle no matter what I try. And I feel like a big giant slacker every day because I get nothing done outside of the bare minimum. I am tired of winter already and it’s not even winter yet!
I hope you all are doing well and happily readying yourselves for whatever holiday celebrations you have in the coming weeks. It’s going to be a very low key holiday season for us and I am okay with that! What sorts of plans do you have for the holidays?

That’s a lovely dress and I like the black and white! Yes I do! I am sorry to hear that you are sleeping so poorly. There is nothing so tiring and get you down so easily as poor sleeping. If you want to scedule next week just say so. For now I do hope you will enjoy your weekend!

It looks fabulous! And I love your long hair. I never realized how long it was. It’s beautiful. As far as sleeping, I don’t think it has anything with turning the clock back. When you get older, especially when you go through menopause, sleeping issues become a huge problem. I wake up at all hours of the night. It’s horrible.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Amy! I really need to get my hair trimmed. There’s about 4 inches at the end that is just a disaster! But I am so happy with how long it has gotten! It’s probably the first time in my life that I have actually liked my hair. And yes, menopause is definitely a huge contributing factor to my messed up sleep. But I was on that regular super early wake up schedule that was tolerable. It was the shift back an hour that is absolutely brutal. Rather than get too stressed trying to fall back to sleep though, I usually just give up and then plod drowsily through the day…hoping for a better outcome he next night. Haha.

Thanks so much, Anne! And today it is almost 60 and raining and really super windy…like 40-50 mph.

Oh, this is such a cute yet chic outfit. But, you know what it needs? A cape! I don’t know why, but I see you wearing a cape with it…a hooded cape! I do hate the changing of clocks for this dratted Daylight Savings Time. I feel like I just about get switched around when it’s time to change again.
Thanks for the link up, Shelbee!

shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Oh my gosh, thanks so much, Marsha! It does need a cape! Or I am thinking this coat might be kinda cool with it, too. Oh, yes, the Daylight Savings…it will take me until spring to adjust as well, just in time to turn the clocks back again. So frustrating! I hope you are having a lovely weekend, my friend.

I love that you layered this Zara dress! The black turtleneck looks great with it! I am also loving it with the Docs. I just got a pair of dark brown combat boots but they arent as heavy. I just love the look with dresses.

Thanks so much, Jess! I love pairing the big chunky boots with dresses! Your brown combat boots are super cool. They have me wanting a pair. I think all of my combat boots are black. I hope you are having a fabulous weekend!

I love the contrast of black and white and like you, I shy away from things that add girth. I love the cut of this and I think it is because it flows and doesn’t have a tight bodice that it works. A lot of dresses nowadays have a high waist that is not very flattering but this is perfect.

shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Mireille! I could totally picture you styling a similar dress. I agree that high waisted fitted bodices don’t really do favors for very many women. The ones that look adorable if you were actually 7 months pregnant! The super huge flowiness of this dress is so fun for twirling in so I don’t even care if makes me look a little bit bigger than I am! Haha…twirling trumps all!

Great thrift find Shelbee! Such a cute dress, and lots of potential ways to style it! Black and white is always right. We are also planning a quiet Christmas this year, too, with Covid cases on the rise again. Enjoy your weedend and thanks for sharing!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Di! It does have a lot of potential! It looks so cute with nothing under it, too. With some cute flat strappy sandals and a big sun hat! I have my fingers crossed that the Covid cases don’t get so bad that the kids can’t go back to school after the holidays. I hope you have a lovely weekend, my friend!

Shelbee,
An alternate title for this post might have been “styling tips for badass cottage core” because you’ve nailed that look perfectly. A bit sweet and a bit sassy, all in the right balance.

Ah-hahahaha, I love that description, Rena! Badass cottage core it is! Very much of the cottage core aesthetic appeals to me except it is just a bit too girly for me…so I add my own personal edge and then it works perfectly for me! Thanks for coining that phraseology!

Darlene
Ugh, I’ve been doing the same thing! Waking up between 2 and 4. I have to read for a bit to finally fall back asleep, so I never feel rested!! You look adorable, as always, and your glove look has just become part of your uniqueness, my friend! Pretty simple holidays here, too, but we are headed to a big NYE gig in San Diego. Trying SO hard to get out of this rut! Happy weekend.
xx Darlene
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Oh no, Darlene, I am so sorry that you are dealing with these weird early morning wake ups, too. Last night I stayed up until 11:30 and I was still up again today around 3:00. And I won’t be able to take a nap either. I usually lay on the couch and try to fall back to sleep but it never works. I have tried everything from reading, listening to calming music, meditating, watching tv, smoking pot, and I can never fall asleep once I am awake.
Your NYE plans sound super fun! Hopefully that is just the thing you need to get un-rutted! I totally feel the winter blues catching me and I am resisting it so hard!
Thanks so much for the lovely compliment, by the way! I hope you are having a wonderful weekend.

Looking so very nice. The time change has been hard this year. Thanks for hosting and I hope that your weekend was good.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Patrick! I was up at 3:00 again today but forced myself to lie there and doze until 4:00 which seems a much more reasonable hour to wake up than 3:00! I hope you have a great week ahead, my friend.

This outfit is so cute! It makes me think of going on a picnic for some reason, even though you have it styled for cooler days.
I’m sorry to hear you are struggling with your sleep schedule. That is the worst! I am struggling with keeping to a blogging schedule, but I don’t know why. I’ve about decided to dump the schedule and blog when I feel like it. Still pondering.

Thanks so much, Michelle! I felt super cute in this outfit and it is perfect for a fall picnic! I hear you on the blog schedule struggle! Right now the schedule of collaborations and my two weekly link ups is the only thing keeping me going at all. I am either burnt out or bored or something with blogging but I definitely don’t want to quit it because I love it. But I have taken huge steps away from it these past few months. I am going to just ride it this way through the winter and then hopefully get back into the major swing of it in spring. I like you approach as well…blog when you are feeling it!

Anita Ojeda
What a cute outfit! I have tons of costumes from the Renaissance era to the early 1900s (I made them for play I directed when I taught drama as part of my senior English classes). Seeing your photos made me want to go dress up in some of the costumes–so many swishy skirts and yards upon yards of fabric! I’m sorry you’re struggling with the time change. Sending hugs and good thoughts your way!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Anita! Oooh, I love the sound of these Renaissance era costumes with yards upon yards of swishy, twirly fabric! How fun would that be to be all swathed in! I hope you do get into those costumes and see what kind of regular non-stage outfits you can make from them! Wishing you and your family a very blessed holiday, my friend!
