Adventures in Thrifting Part 13: Vintage Top for a Fall Date Night Outfit & Link Up On the Edge #270
A few weeks ago, we had a date night planned on a random Wednesday evening. It was to be the husband, the boyfriend, and me with dinner, drinks, and conversation on the date night menu. Thanks to our faithful and beloved BFF who generously agreed to sit and play video games with the boys all night, we were able to get this date night scheduled.
But as life often does, it interfered with our date night plans when boyfriend couldn’t make it. So Jeff and I headed out alone, taking full advantage of a BFF who agrees to babysit! We had a fabulous dinner at a new-ish restaurant in town, The Bad Apple Saloon. Their duck bacon wontons are basically like little flavor orgasms in your mouth. Perfect for a sexy date night!
Then we headed off to Maggie’s On the River for after dinner drinks and potentially dessert (we never did get dessert though). We ran into one of my fabulous new Goddess friends and had a great evening drinking and chatting.
As is typical of middle aged people and date nights, we were home by 10:00 p.m. and promptly in bed by 11:00. Actually, our typical date nights generally only last from about 5:00-8:00 p.m. with a bedtime of 9:00. Midlife dating, especially when you have young children, is not nearly as glamorous as dating in one’s twenties. But I do believe it is a lot more enjoyable now.
In any event, I have been wanting an opportunity to wear this funky vintage top I picked up in the thrift shop a few months ago. Actually, I am not certain if it is truly vintage (I didn’t do the research this time), but it definitely has a vintage vibe. I love the autumnal color palette and the diamond pattern intrigues me. It is difficult to see in the photos but there are teal and dark red diamonds at the center of each larger diamond shape.
I knew that I wanted to pair this shirt with my dark wash flared denim and boots or clogs with a 70’s inspiration. I have a pair of really fun fringed clogs that would have been perfect with this outfit, but they are seriously hazardous. I have twisted my ankle too many times walking on those things. Instead I chose a handy old pair of Nine West ankle boots in a cognac color that I have had for quite a few years.
Picking up on the bits of dark red in the shirt, I added red leather leaf earrings from Good Life Healing Arts & Gift Shop and then topped my head with a dark red beret for a little extra drama. I also wore one of my favorite Michal Golan necklaces.
My olive green military jacket seemed to work perfectly with the whole look except for the fact that it is a bit too big on me now. Everything in my closet is a bit too big on me these days. Not that I’m complaining. But I do love my massive wardrobe and really don’t want to have to replace it!
Our date night was before Halloween because we took down the porch decorations on November 1. But here are some photos as we were heading out with our spooky Halloween house behind us.
That’s all I have for you this week! I will be back on Monday with my frugal friends of The Thrifty Six. Have a wonderful weekend and do let me know in the comments if you have some fun plans ahead!

Thanks so much, Nancy! It was really great to get out for the evening. We have been going on lots of brunch dates though while Jeff has been working night shifts so that’s been fun, too!

When I lived in Portland, I enjoyed seeing the little girls walking to parochial school in uniforms that looked a lot like your outfit. Very cute.

I love this outfit, Shelbee! The beret is fabulous. And the print in the blouse is so pretty. Too bad your boyfriend had to cancel, but hey unexpected goddess energy is awesome. I had to laugh about your remarks on middle aged dating. In Vegas, most concerts start at 9pm. While I usually don’t go to sleep until around midnight, that’s definitely when I’m ready to relax and unwind. So, I was really excited when the Buddy Guy concert we attended a few weeks ago started at 6:30pm. LOL!

Thanks so much, Michelle! Oh my gosh, I hate when concerts don’t start until that late at night. A 6:00 or 6:30 start is perfect for all ages! And yeah, even if I am going to stay up later than normal, I still like to be home by a certain hour, too. I guess that comes with getting older as well. The comforts of home call us back all the time!

Also? I have been noticing your weight loss. Way to go! I hear you on having some clothing items that are too big. I have some of those too, and I am loathe to replace them. Mine is all thyroid hormone mediated though.

Thanks! While I am feeling really great about the weight loss, I still wish I could rid myself of the constant fatigue. That is all hormonal though so hopefully it will pass soon.

Thanks so much, Debbie! I have had sex on the brain for many months now and the orgasm references seem to sneak in at every corner! Haha. Oh funny story about these jeans…when I first tried them on in Torrid, I loved them but the price tag was steep so I passed on them. Then I couldn’t stop thinking about them because I do feel fabulous in them. I went back and they were no longer there. And then a few visits later, there was one pair on the clearance rack in my size that someone must have returned. I scooped them up so fast!

Love this stylish, casual look. The print on your shirt does have a vintage feel to it. I clicked through to where you went for food – big mistake when you’re hungry! The food looked delicious, sounds like the perfect date night. Have a lovely weekend Shelbee.

Aw, thanks so much, Alison! I am laughing out loud that you clicked on the restaurant links and then made yourself even hungrier…especially since I am fairly certain that you won’t be patronizing any eateries in northern New York State any time soon! I hope you have a wonderful weekend, my friend!

Glad you had an enjoyable date night out! Love the autumn colors and 70’s vibe of this outfit. You always rock it when you wear a beret, plus your curls look amazing! Hope you have a good weekend and thanks for sharing!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Di! I do love my berets! I think I have about a dozen of them now in various colors but I find that I reach for this red one more frequently than all the others.

Love this combo! The red hat with the olive and then the cool 70s shirt with the flares! lots of style!
Great that you and hubby went out and enjoyed some new places along with chatting it up with a girlfriend. Great to enjoy it since you had the babysitter 🙂
I want to know how you curled your hair ! It looks glorious! I wish mine would grow that long, but I suppose at 53, I should be happy it grows!
Have a great weekend friend!

Jess, thanks so much, my friend! It was a really great night out. We don’t get to go on date nights often so we really enjoy them when we do get out. So I use those bendy curlers in my hair. I find the curls hold longer than when I have tried a curling iron. The hot iron is bad for my hair anyway so I do really like the heatless method of curling. I usually only have to leave them in for about an hour and the curl will stay for the day with a bit of hairspray. I currently only have 6 rollers so I use 3 on each side. But I might order the 42 pack that I just linked in this comment. They have different sizes and stuff in it that I would like to try.

We are the same way with date nights! We are often in bed by 10 so we don’t feel super exhausted the next day! Love that vintage shirt!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Laura! Yes, I wake up at 4:00 a.m. no matter what so early bedtime is necessary for me even on date nights if I want to function the next day!

Marsha Banks
Oh, I love everything about this outfit! You’re what I think I look like when I go out (hahaha)! Your legs look so long in these pants! Ah, date nights…we try to go out once a week, but when you’re empty nesters, it kinda loses its lustre (not to mention we’ve been dating since 1973)! But, companionable silence is golden just like long conversations…we still have them so I guess we’re doing something right!
Thanks for the link up, Shelbee!!

Oh my gosh, Marsha, I love this comment so much! I agree with you 100% that companionable silence is just as golden as long conversations. My husband and I have the ability to engage comfortably in both. We always tell each other, “You are my very favorite person to do absolutely nothing with!” I guess we are doing something right as well! Just like you!

Rena
Shelbee, another fabulous look and you look freakin’ great. I had to chuckle about how date night in midlife has a different timetable than it does for those in their 20s. Even without young children or a 9-5 job to report to in the morning, I’m more than happy for an evening out to end before 10pm so that I can get into bed.
Rena

shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Rena, thanks so much! I have never really been much for late nights even when I was younger, but I at least had the stamina back then to push through a long night and the next day if I wanted to! Now if I stay up too late having adult fun, it takes me an entire week to recover! So yes, early date nights are totally fine by me.
xoxo
Shelbee
Joanne
You look fabulous! Our date nights tend to end early too (usually by 9) and I am totally fine with that at this state in our lives!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Joanne! Oh yea, I am definitely not complaining about an early turn in on any night, date or not! I wake up around 4:00 am every morning regardless of the time I go to sleep so early is better for me! Then Daylight Savings comes around and now I wake up at 3:00!

It’s good to go out on date nights, we are the same and in by 10 too. We prefer to go out earlier and never late back. Loving your house decorations 🙂 Beautiful outfit and curly hair. Thanks so much for hosting.

Thanks, Claire! Yes, the age of staying out late is long gone for me! I never was much of a night owl to begin with so early has always been my preference.
