Accessorizing to Support Small Businesses & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up #168
With so many small businesses suffering right now, it is important to support your favorite ones as we all struggle to get through this trying time. That being said, it is difficult to support any business if you too have suffered a loss of income due to government shut downs. But it is the small businesses that are the backbone of our economy. So even if you are only able to do a little bit, any little bit is helpful.
I have always been an advocate for supporting small businesses and since I never have an unlimited budget to indulge myself in all the wonderful things these shops have to offer, I do what I can. Sometimes, it is something as small as purchasing a tiny trinket, a unique accessory, or an unexpected gift for a friend. Other times, when my money tree has failed to bloom, I share my favorite small businesses here.
Today’s outfit features six accessories from five different independent business owners in three different states. I purchased all of these items before businesses were forced to close and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to do so. To continue my efforts in spreading kindness and supporting my friends, I figured this was the perfect time to share how I incorporate unique and whimsical pieces into my very eclectic style choices.
Anne M. Bray of SpyGirl on Redbubble (California): My dear friend, Anne M. Bray, artist, blogger, and all around really cool gal, puts her amazing digital artwork onto all sorts of products sold through Redbubble, an online retailer where independent artists can share their art in wearable and displayable ways. I purchased this Fashion Rainbow Scarf over 3 years ago and it is still one of my favorite accessories. Not only because it is so colorful and versatile but because it features Anne’s fashion sketch of little ole me (6th one in the top row). To shop Anne’s entire Redbubble collection, click here.
Solitary Consignment (New York): Solitary Consignment is the pre-loved clothing boutique where I worked last year. Over the course of the year, I managed to accumulate quite a pile of second hand fashions that I love. I am a huge advocate and a fan of second hand shopping for clothing and accessories. Not only is it so much better for the environment and the bank account, but there is a certain thrill in the hunt for unique pieces. You all know my undying love for kimonos and I cannot resist a bright and cheerful print. While a kimono may not necessarily be considered an accessory, I think it can fit into that category as a piece that can complete any outfit. I scored this colorful Lularoe kimono for under $20 last summer and this is the first time I am wearing it. I am not sure if you can currently purchase any items from Solitary Consignment online.
EyeCrave Optics (New York): My entire collection of eyewear is all from a local optical boutique in my neighborhood specializing in unique independent eyewear designers. My sunglasses are by Oliver Goldsmith and my tortoise frames are Gotti Switzerland. I am long overdue for new sunglasses and regular glasses, but my budget restrictions are in full force right now for this kind of purchase.
Moontide Arts (New York): I featured this adorable little shop last month which specializes in all things spiritual and mystical from oils and herbs to crystals and pendulums as well as an incredibly extensive selection of really intriguing jewelry. I have recently become a tiny bit obsessed with all things mushroom. But I don’t have anything with a mushroom print. Recently, I tried on an adorable mushroom print swing dress in a boutique in Asheville, North Carolina, but it was one size too small and I was forced to leave it behind. When I spotted this darling mushroom necklace in Moontide Arts, I couldn’t resist the temptation especially since it was under $10. And so it marks the beginning of my mushroom collection. (I suppose it is not a collection quite yet since I only have one mushroom thing.) Moontide Arts is currently unable to offer shipping on products bought online, but you can still browse. You can see my sodalite pendulum necklace, also from Moontide Arts, here.
The Open Door Boutique (North Carolina): When I visited Asheville in February (you can read about that trip here), I stumbled upon this wonderful clothing and accessory boutique while I was wandering aimlessly around downtown. The Open Door Boutique specializes in bohemian styles for both women and men with a wide array of unique clothing, jewelry and other accessories, and all sorts of holistic health items as well. I purchased this super fun rastacap as well as a stone hair stick (you can see that here) and a whimsical tree-of-life bracelet for my dear friend Becca. Unfortunately, I didn’t take a photo of the bracelet before I mailed it off to her. The Open Door Boutique does offer online sales and shipping. So if you see something you love, why not treat yourself!
If your favorite small businesses are currently offering online sales and you are feeling moved to show your support, why not purchase a gift for yourself or for someone you know who can use a mood booster. I mean, who doesn’t love to receive an unexpected gift in the mail?
And now your featured favorites from last week.

Dee of Grammy’s Grid shared a fun post, No Housework Day, giving us all sorts of lovely ideas for things to do to celebrate a day of no housework. Although No Housework Day was on April 7, that doesn’t mean we can’t make up our own days for things of this sort! In fact, let today be any day that you want it to be!
My Favorite Fashion Post
Katie of Hello Katie Girl made me smile so big with her post, Keep It Bright! I really need to follow her lead and start getting dressed in my brightest and most cheerful outfits right now. It really does help to boost your mood and elevate your energy level when you look like a cheerful rainbow! Seriously though, isn’t Katie’s dress the most adorable thing?! And now I am really wanting some orange shoes for myself, too!

I’d love to get my hands on one of those scarves! Even better a UK blogger one! Or mixed. All my favourite bloggers from around the world. What a keepsake that would be Shelbee. You are 100% right. We need to support the small businesses at the moment xx
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Laurie! We may need to pitch that idea to Anne for a scarf featuring UK bloggers! I am not certain who all the bloggers on this scarf are, but if you look closely I am certain you will recognize some of them! We would need to defer to Anne for a list of all her muses. I hope your week is off to a great start!

I think that scarf is so cool – and how could you not love wearing something with your likeness featured? Your pendant reminds me of one I have. Mine is a similar shape and look but it has a map of Gainesville in it, that’s the city where my boys’ university is located. It’s become a favorite of mine and a great gift to give others when they’re kids decide to go to UF! I love a meaningful gift!

Thanks so much, Kellyann! This scarf is so wonderful and I will cherish forever. Perhaps one day I will have a granddaughter to pass it on to. I love that you have a Gainesville pendant to feel closer to your son. What a cool and meaningful piece of jewelry!

I love supporting small businesses and agree, it’s especially important right now! Your scarf is so beautiful! And, I love the look of socks with sandals! Thank you for the linkup!
Jill – Doused in Pink
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Jill! Small businesses offer so many unique things. I feel like when we buy from larger retailers, we end up looking the same as everyone else. I didn’t want to wear socks with these sandals because I had just painted my toes that day, but it was so cold, I needed a little coverage on my toes!

The scarf is pretty awesome! I will need to check out Anne’s creations! I am also going to see if any of the small shops in our little town are online. There is this one little store with all kinds of cute jewelry, art… maybe I can get a few things.

Thanks so much, Mireille! Anne has some pretty cool things on Redbubble. I would love to get one of the dresses, but my budget is so limited these days that I have to stick with accessories or lower priced items. Let me know if you end up getting anything from either Anne or your favorite small shops!

Thanks so much, Amy! I found the shoes on clearance at Old Navy for under $10 and the coat was a clearance item from Torrid for around $17. I couldn’t resist those bargains!

That hat is you! I love the boho style , it does remind me of Asheville. I believe in supporting small business too. We have a favorite hangout, The Cottage, which is a great place to hang out, bring the pups, watch the boats on the lake, and enjoy a great bottle of wine. Since they are a fav place, we bought 6 bottles and they brought it out curbside. Love the red jacket , those darling socks, and that scarf is awesome, its art!
take care my friend

Thanks so much, Jess! I love that you ordered 6 bottles of wine from The Cottage! That is awesome for them and for you. I have been drinking much more than I normally do these days! That sounds bad but I rarely drink at all so when I say I have been drinking much more than normal, I mean, like I have one drink every 5-7 days…a huge increase from my norm of one drink every 50-70 days.

Ah, thanks for all the Blogger Love! You are the bestest!
HOPEFULLY, I can travel to my niece’s wedding in Utica in September. We should definitely have a meet-up if so!
I just got the hook-up to Zazzle, another Print-on-Demand site. The savvy people at Zazzle jumped into custom printing on Face Masks. I submitted my first design (Fluevog shoes) but it appears that only the Bandanna went “live”. Sigh. Gotta work on that! https://www.zazzle.com/store/annembraymart
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Aw, you are quite welcome, my friend! I hope you can travel to Utica in September, too! That would be AMAZING! I just checked out Zazzle. I am glad you got on another site like that. Maybe the face masks are coming next? Do you want me to add the Zazzle link into the post? Cuz I’ll do it!

Utica is my #2 “last weekend in Sep”t event (don’t tell my niece she’s #2). #1 is a possible art show in Luxembourg!!!!!
Nah for the Zazzle link. My shop is meager and it’ll just be Fluevog stuff (I’m thinking). Though maybe I should do a safety cone safety mask. Bahahaha.

I won’t tell your dirty little secrets, my friend! Ha. And yes, you absolutely should do a safety cone safety mask!!!

Carrie @ Curly Crafty Mom
What a perfect post for this time and age we are in right now. It is important to support small business, we have mainly been doing that by getting carry out… but, I love how you shared accessories from 5 different businesses on here. It is a great way to get their name out and promote a little online shopping!! Hope you are doing well…
Carrie

We have so many cute shops here in San Clemente and one that has crafts and items from local artists. Sadly, all are closed right now. But I agree with you about the importance of shopping locally. We have had to rely a LOT on Amazon lately and I always feel guilty for making Bezo richer and not the small folks! But all will return to some semblance of normal in the future. I love the scarf and the red coat and the cutest socks and sandals!

shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Darlene! I hear you about Amazon. But I think there are a lot of small businesses who also sell on Amazon. So while they may not make as much once they pay Amazon their cut, we can still support small businesses through Amazon purchases. We just need to pay attention to the sellers and figure out if they are small businesses. Hmmm….I wonder if I should get more details on that and share another post about how to support them through Amazon.

Looking very nice. I am trying to support the small businesses in my area. The sad thing is that some of them don’t have an online presence but I do my best
Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks so much, Patrick! I know a lot of small businesses are not offering online sales, but I am trying to support the ones that can do that. As for the ones that don’t have online sales, I guess we just need to keep them on our radar and not forget about them once everything is operating as normal again.

My heart goes out to all the small business owners! I love finding fun items to stash in my gift closet (for when I need small gifts) at small businesses and we’ve been trying to get take out from local restaurants once a week, too. I hope this all ends soon so not many of them need to close!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Laura, thanks so much for what you are doing to support small businesses. I love that you stash items in a gift closet! That is so fun! We don’t order out often because it gets pricey, but I think this weekend will be an order out weekend!
