What to Wear to a Spring Birthday Party & Your Own Twist Link Up #20
Today is not my actual birthday. That comes next week. It is also not my blog birthday. That comes in August. But it is time for our monthly style challenge. Monica and I chose Spring birthday party outfits for this month’s Your Own Twist because May is the month where I celebrate the most birthdays.
In fact, I just ordered a birthday cake for this Saturday to celebrate life and friendship. With the Memorial Day holiday weekend upon us and social distancing measures slowly easing, we will be cooking outside with our neighbors, enjoying fresh air, good food, probably lots of drinks, and a birthday cake from my favorite baker, Monica of EuropeCakes.
We will be celebrating Jeff’s birthday (May 26), my neighbor Anna’s birthday (May 28), and my birthday (May 30) this Saturday. We all chipped in for the cake and the food and per our usual setup, it’s BYOB. It is times like these when I really cherish the wonderful relationships that we have cultivated with our neighbors. I am more grateful than ever for their proximity, their kindness, and all the laughs and special memories we have made as we have watched our children develop long-lasting friendships as well.
I have a silly story about the photos for this post. About 2 weeks ago, I had scribbled down on my notepad that I have to get the photos done for this post soon. In the margin I had written “festival style” as the theme. I am not sure why…I think I am still in the grieving process over all the canceled festivals and I must have had festivals on my mind. So I put together a festival outfit on a very chilly day and I was not at all happy with it for the specified theme. I had to wear jeans and booties because it was too cold and that just didn’t scream festival to me. I wanted to wear shorts and sandals but it was still too cold for all that.
I was willing to settle, however, since I had nothing else to work with. I came home, edited the photos, and was getting ready to send an image off to Monica to create our cover collage. And that is when I realized I had styled the entirely wrong theme. Back to square one I went.
I have had this silky floral dress hanging in my closet for over a year just waiting for a special occasion. I found this beauty in my local consignment shop and I couldn’t resist it. And what better occasion to wear a pretty frock than to celebrate birthdays and friendship and Spring. I borrowed these birthday balloons from a friend and the wind seemed to be mostly working in our favor with regard to the balloons. Although I did eat foil a few times during this shoot!
The motivation is low these days to get dressed at all. It felt really amazing to get all dressed up even with no place to go! Have you been getting dressed up for no particular reason or if have you just embraced the comforts of loungewear while staying at home?
Your Own Twist is a monthly series hosted by Monica of Jersey Girl, Texan Heart and myself where we showcase our own interpretations of a chosen style theme. We share the theme with you ahead of time in case you are interested in joining us. You can see the upcoming themes below if you would like to create your own post around the theme and share it with us in the link party at the end of the post. You are also welcome to link any fashion or style post even if you did not follow the theme. Next month’s theme will be Tropical. That might be a challenge for me! I need to get back on my style game, for sure.
Keeping it on the edge,

Well, it looks like you have the birthday theme covered. And it’s good to get some practice before the actual day. Can we expect a report on the party and the cake?
I know what you mean about lack of motivation to get dressed. I seem to be spending my days in sweatpants or pyjamas… I’m trying to get my mojo back in time for my birthday (a few days after yours), though.

Thanks so much, Tiina! I think I will deliver a report to you all about the party and the cake. Content ideas are just as hard as to come by these days as is motivation for getting dressed! I put a sundress on yesterday but never photographed it. However, it did feel pretty great to just have actual clothing on. I hope you get your mojo back by your birthday! And I wish you many birthday blessings as well!

Love, love, love your dress. The print is gorgeous and the red shoes make the red flowers in the dress really pop. The lace tights are a great complement to the outfit too. Since it is spring I’ve been having the urge to dress up too. Even if I have no place to go!

That is such a cute dress!! I have gotten more dressed for a few important Zooms but otherwise I have kept it way casual for teaching (usually a nice top and jeans lol!)

Tamar, thanks so much! I have been super casual as well, usually just jeans and a tee shirt. But it really did feel great to get dressed up! I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

You look absolutely gorgeous in these pics, Shelbee! What a great dress for a celebration of life! Glad you have great neighbors, sure makes a difference. This weekend we will go to hubby’s uncle’s lakehouse and hopefully more sunshine than rain. I am actually wearing a little down jacket as I type this outside: this weather is all over the place.

Thanks so much, Mireille! It is finally getting warm here, but it is this weird time of year when it is way colder inside my house so I am bundled up in a fleece lined sweater layered over a sundress! I hope you have a lovely weekend at the lake house!

Well happy birthday to you, Jeff, and Anna! I love this outfit! The dress is fantastic, the shoes match the dress perfectly, and who can resist lacy stockings? I’m so glad you finally found an occasion to wear the dress!
In reaction to being home all the time, I’m upgrading my lounge wear. LOL!

What a cute dress, and I hope you have a great time celebrating everyone’s birthdays! My son’s birthday is coming up and we are not sure what to do as there is still a 10 person restriction on gatherings which makes it difficult to have any of his school friends over. The next week it goes up to 20 people but that still wouldn’t be enough for all his class and then parents – we may have another one at home just with family.
It’s nice you were able to redo the photos and have the right theme – I’m lucky I just take a photo of what I wear each day so I don’t need to worry about putting something special together!
Hope you are having a good week 🙂 It’s a bit cold here – winter has arrived a week early!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Mica, thanks so much! The kids’ birthdays are hard during lockdown. Both of my kids had their birthdays during this time and I promised them that once this is all over, we would have a regular party of some kind for both of them. And I think that was the first time I goofed up a style theme! Ha. I do like the themes though because I can’t seem to take pictures every day of my outfits. I used to when the kids went to school. It was my morning routine. I hope you come up a creative idea for your son’s birthday. And have a lovely weekend!

An early Happy Birthday to you, Shelbee! I’m so glad restrictions are easing up enough that you’ll be able to have some fun with friends this weekend. We have neighbors we’re close to, too, and had a safe-distancing Happy Hour a couple of weeks ago. That dress is just perfect for you and I love the veiled hat thingy and those lacy tights! You look gorgeous and the balloons were a wonderful idea as a photo prop. I’m thinking of all of the festivals that have been cancelled so far (they start in late March/early April here) and even though it’s been a few years since I’ve been to anything, I wanted to go to all of them this year 🙁 And the weather has been so up and down here (and by down, I mean upper 50’s one day and upper 80’s the next). We’ve already seen the mid-90s here but just a few days before, we were back to jackets. I hope you have an enjoyable and wonderful weekend and thank you so much for the link-up!

Ruth, thank you so very much, my friend! We are so rural where I live that it hasn’t been too much of an issue to socialize with the neighbors and stuff. We are like our own little isolated community anyway. It has a nice feeling about it. Takes us back to a simpler time, it seems. Our weather went from snow to nearly 80 degrees in a matter of a few days as well. So weird! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Also your fun photo-shoot with the balloons reminds me of my own birthday shoot earlier this month. Of course I love the theme too since I am also born in May and most people I know were born in May!
