Weekend Date in Troy, New York & #SpreadTheKindness Link Up On the Edge #724

The in-laws were visiting last week to attend Archie’s football game and we took full advantage of their stay by booking a weekend getaway in Troy, New York. Troy is a really quaint town of about 51,000 people located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River in the Capital District of New York State. It is approximately 140 miles southeast from where we live and took 3 hours to drive there. We were blessed with beautiful weather for the whole weekend and thoroughly enjoyed our driving time together as much as all the other things we did.

Troy, New York, is the home of Samuel Wilson, who is known as the inspiration for Uncle Sam, a character who became the national personification of the United States in the early 19th century and remains a popular symbol for our country today. We drove by the cemetery where Mr. Wilson is buried but we did not go exploring.

Troy, New York, is also the home of the Emma Willard School, a boarding school for girls in grades 9-12 and the first women’s higher education institution in the United States founded in 1814. We did not visit the school but I mention it because it is the alma mater of my dear friend Anne.

Before heading to Troy, I reached out to Anne for restaurant recommendations and, boy oh boy, did she deliver! She put a call out on Facebook to her Troy friends for the best food in town and a bunch of folks recommended a farm to table restaurant called Nighthawks. We had the most amazing lunch there. When our server asked how our food was, my response was, “This is how food is supposed to taste. My only disappointment is that I have eaten it all and want more!” Everything was so fresh that the tomatoes on my sandwich tasted like I was biting them straight off the vine.

After we filled our bellies, we strolled around town, took some photos, and checked out all the cool little shops and boutiques. We bought a really pretty cabinet in an antique store for my mother-in-law which she absolutely loved. Almost everything in town closed by 5:00 p.m. so we headed to our hotel across the river fairly early and settled in for the night. We had a not-so-good dinner from a local pub delivered to our room and enjoyed the rest of the evening in our hotel room despite the bad food.

On Sunday morning, we joined the other hotel guests for a big breakfast buffet that energized us for the day’s activities and the long drive home. We departed from the hotel around 10:00 a.m. and drove about 45 minutes to Greenwich, New York, for the Adirondack Wool & Arts Festival. This festival was even better than I imagined it would be with all sorts of beautiful fiber arts and crafts. We bought a pair of cozy alpaca socks for my father-in-law and I ended up getting the most amazing hat made from hand felted wool. It is literally the best hat I have ever seen. But you can’t see it until Jeff gives it to me at Christmas time!

The festival was held at the Washington County Fairgrounds which is the home an antique farm museum as well. We walked around the festival and explored the farm museum for a solid two hours before getting back in the car to continue our journey home. We found a lovely little restaurant on the way called George Henry’s in Warrensburg, New York. It had great food, a wonderful atmosphere, amazing service, and a really fascinating history. After lunch, we still had about three more hours of driving because we took the really long way home. The kids were excited to see us but they were more excited to eat our leftovers from George Henry’s!

Jeff and I rarely have time alone so this was a much needed date weekend! We are super grateful to the grandparents for supervising the children while we escaped for 36 hours. A big thank you to them as well as Anne for giving wonderful suggestions!

I wore a burst of bold florals for our day of strolling with a new dress purchased from an end of season sale combined with an old floral kimono robe, my olive green Furkenstocks, and a very large straw hat in olive that I just picked up on clearance while shopping with my mother-in-law. I felt very swishy and feminine and received lots of compliments on my outfit that day which is always fun. I am already looking forward to our next date weekend even though I have no idea when that will happen!
