Tips for Purchasing Eyeglasses Online
The age of technology has offered some great options for ease and convenience in our daily lives. When you are having a bad day and don’t feel like leaving the house but need to get things done, like shopping, being able to do it online in the comfort of your own home is great.
In this modern day era of technology, you can purchase just about all of your needs online, including prescription eyeglasses. Companies like EyeBuyDirect have created easy ways to choose your frames and lenses and place your prescription eyewear order. So there is no longer any need to spend an extra hour or so at the optician’s office trying on numerous frames in a vain search to find the right ones for your face. Many people find shopping for new eyewear to be frustrating and exhausting and online shopping offers another option that will not have you out running around to different optical stores searching for your perfect eyewear. It is now as easy as going online, finding the right frame size and shape, and saving money in the process.
There are a few things to keep in mind, however, when shopping for glasses online.
Make sure you have an eye exam and your most recent prescription before ordering online.
If your last eye exam was over a year ago, it is advised that you schedule one and have your vision test completed before ordering new eyewear. Even if you think your vision has remained the same since your last exam, it is still wise to have your eyes checked annually. Our vision slowly deteriorates with age and sometimes even minor changes can benefit from an updated prescription. Most eye exams also include eye health checks which are very important to your overall eye functioning. For example, a pressure test, which can detect the early signs of glaucoma or ocular hypertension, is helpful in early diagnosis for better treatment options. A complete eye exam generally only takes about 30 minutes to complete and will result in an updated analysis of your eyesight as well as your general eye health.
Upon completion of your eye exam, you will be given a current prescription for your lenses. If you plan on ordering your glasses online, make sure to request your pupillary distance (PD) number. This will ensure that the strongest point of the lenses sits directly in front of your pupils. Pupillary distance is important for proper fit and functionality of your lenses and becomes even more so the worse your eyesight becomes over time.
Understand which frames work best for your face shape.
Instead of trying on numerous pairs of glasses using a virtual mirror app, this helpful guide is quite useful for determining the best frame fit for your face. The link provides a chart that matches facial shape with eyeglass styles that are the most flattering. It will also give you tips on how to accurately identify the shape of your face.
Consider the different types of available finishes.
If you work frequently on computers or other types of technology that rely heavily on screen time, you want to be sure to get the most functional finish on your lenses. If your lenses produce too much glare this can add to eye strain which can cause long term eye health issues.
You may also want to consider investing in special computer glasses. The type of lens technology in these speciality glasses will account for the fact that a screen is generally at a further reading distance than a book or newspaper would be. If you are considering this type of eyewear, definitely discuss the options with your optician because a special prescription will be needed.
Purchasing eyewear online may not work for everyone.
Keep in mind that shopping online for glasses may not work for everyone. If the shape of your face and ears mean that your glasses cannot fit properly without tricky adjustments, you may want to continue to purchase in person from your optician. Optician offices have the necessary experience and equipment to bend and adjust the frames to ensure the proper fit so you can see clearly.
On the other hand, if you have to make adjustments to the frames yourself based on past experience with eyewear fit, it is worth giving online shopping for eyewear a try. If you are a first time purchaser of online prescription glasses, you could start with an inexpensive pair and see how the experience works for you.
Shopping for eyewear online gives you many options for unique and stylish frames at a fraction of the cost of many optical stores. It is totally worth trying.
Have you ever ordered prescription eyeglasses from online shops? What has your experience been?

This is definitely more convenient, but I think I’d have to already know the frames I wanted. I usually have to try a bunch on to see which looks best.

Julie, thanks for reading! I used to order my glasses online and I think I only ever got one pair that didn’t look quite right on my face. But they were so inexpensive that I wasn’t that upset about it. Now, my prescription is so complicated that the online shops usually can’t fill it. I just find it a fun way to build an eyewear wardrobe on a budget. Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Great tips Shelbee! I haven’t had to shop for eyeglasses online yet as I currently don’t wear glasses but will definitely pass this along to my family members that do and need a pair. I hope your week is going so far and wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Maureen, thanks so much for reading! I used to shop only online for my glasses and I had such a cute collection of glasses. But now my prescription is way too difficult to get right through online shopping. But it is such a great option with easier prescriptions. Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Jodie, thanks for reading! I used to order online all the time, but then my prescription got really tricky as my eyes have aged. But I will look into it again as maybe the technology has improved since I last ordered online. Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving, my friend!

These are good tips! I’ve never thought of buying my glasses online, I just get the reminder I’m due for an eye test and go in to the optician, haha! I only need my glasses for reading so I don’t need a lot of extra pairs 🙂
Hope that your week is going well 🙂 I had a Christmas night out with friends last night, it was a lot of fun!

Mica, thanks so much for reading! Now that I am getting old and my vision is a bit tricky, it is difficult for me to order online because my prescription is complicated. But I used to order online frequently and it was a great way to build an eyewear wardrobe on a budget. I am glad you had a fun time last night! We are celebrating Thanksgiving today with family.

I haven’t yet made the online leap, but it gets more and more tempting. My last lenses set me back more than $600 (and I provided the frames)! Gotta get myself to the optometrist STAT. It’s been a while.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
I can’t really order online anymore because my prescription has become quite difficult to fill with my old eyes! My lenses start around the $400 mark so I feel your pain!

Yeah, my eyes have just about every kind of vision problem and now I’m having trouble driving in the dark because of the cussed overly bright headlamps they put on new vehicles. I think that warrants an excuse to leave work at 4:30 instead of 6:00, right?
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
OMG, night driving is the worst! If I can avoid it, I do. And yes, leave at 4:30 for your own safety! Or say it is a religious requirement or something…you have to be home before dark. Haha

Hahahaha. I just clicked through on the Face Guide thing and
1) it’s for men
2) cat eye shape not included
3) “oversized” are “DON’T” for ALL face types. << so funny!
4) Severo (round head) wears a lot of his "don'ts" and looks great. It's all in the attitude, dude!
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Yeah, I think you definitely need to try them on to see what fits best! I only add the links that I am asked to add…when the price is right, you know, I gotta keep this blog paying for itself! Hahaha.

I have really bad eyesight so I’m not sure if purchasing glasses online would be a good idea for me. =(
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Patricia, thanks so much for reading. I used to purchase glasses online all the time and had the cutest collection of eyewear. But in recent years with age and declining eyesight, I can’t really order mine online anymore either. They just can’t get my prescription correct. It is too complicated, I guess. So I do have to go to a regular optician. But for people with super light and easy scripts, I highly recommend online ordering!
