The Thrifty Six: Shawls, Capes & Scarves

The Thrifty Six

Welcome to the November edition of The Thrifty Six! We are a group of international fashion lovers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we will all share an outfit based on a specific theme that features preloved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling preloved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here not only to inspire you to shop second hand but to also get creative in your closets.

Jane suggested we share our preloved shawls, capes, and/or scarves for this month’s thrifty challenge. I was going to style my grandmother’s shawl but I recently shared it for Style Imitating Art | “The Lovers” by Maude Kaufman Eggemeyer. I have a similar crocheted shawl in navy blue that my former neighbor, Nettie, gave to me many years ago. I decided against styling that shawl because I was struggling to build a complete outfit around it using only preloved pieces.

So I switched it up and went with this buttery yellow cape-like jacket.

It is not cape because it has sleeves, but I still always refer to it as my yellow cape because it has a cape-like silhouette. I layered it on top of one of my favorite thrift shop dresses, this black ribbed knit body contouring dress by Zara (also styled here with my red cape). I accessorized with a seed bead necklace and earrings, which were both purchased from flea markets, and preloved black suede ankle boots.

Since I am using an extremely loose definition of a cape to complete this challenge, I decided to also include a thrifted scarf just be sure I followed the rules. I found this scarf years ago at a thrift shop and wear it frequently. Of course, I am really drawn to the super bright floral print on the black background.

The scarf was the perfect way to tie in my bright pink Panama hat. This hat did not come with a hat band which I really like because I can add different accessories to coordinate with my outfit. There are all sorts of things that make excellent hat bands such as scarves, fabric belts, leather or faux leather belts, strands of pearls, or other necklaces. For this hat band, I used one of those cheap belts that are sometimes sold attached to a pair of pants. I wrapped the belt around the hat, punched a new hole where I needed to fasten it, and then tucked in the ends. The only thing I really need is a feather or a flower in my hat band!

I was really pleased with how well the yellow and pink stood out against the black background and my floral scarf was the perfect thing to tie all the colors together.

Now let’s see what my thrifty friends have styled for Shawls, Capes & Scarves.

“This is one of two capes I bought on eBay a few years ago. It’s from a range of clothes designed by TV and radio presenter Fearne Cotton. For the rest of the outfit, I took my cue from the orange in the check print. The trousers are part of a suit but I’ve switched the jacket for an orange jumper. The hat is an old one from Zara.”

“The T6 theme for November is ‘Shawls, Capes & Scarves’, an ideal opportunity to show off my genuine 1960’s hand-crocheted cape.

Although bought separately, it’s a perfect match for my hand-crocheted baker-boy cap; they’re like a set that sadly lost each other many years ago…

I’m bringing them together along with a genuine 1960s ‘Go-Go’ dress and pastel pink leather ‘Go-Go’ boots to create this extremely stylised look.”

“Scarves are something I only started having fun with once I retired. And my crew took the prompt and decided to showcase different ways to layer these magical pieces of fabric. I created a necklace from 3 thrifted scarves which I shaped into flowers (but that’s hard to tell when they are all pushed together like this). I think they contrast against the lime green thrifted sweater so wonderfully.”

“Hats and capes are not for me. I think a cape is a beautifully elegant piece of clothing but I have no idea how and on what to wear it, and I hate hats. So that wasn’t an option. When it’s cold, I always wear a scarf over my mouth to protect my lungs when I go cycling. But the idea of wearing a second-hand scarf over my mouth really bothers me. So I’m skipping school a bit and wearing a self made scarf here. Years ago I picked up the idea of crocheting. Just a rectangular piece, the same stitch that were all my talents when it came to crocheting, but I found it very relaxing. And so this scarf came out. Wonderfully warm!”

“Scarves are my favorite item to thrift:
-They are usually in great condition
-They are one-size-fits-all (or -most)
-They are pretty much always in style
-They can be found quite inexpensively.
That’s how I have ended up with 151 thrifted scarves 😀  But I do wear them all the time so my cost per wear is good, averaging $0.85 per thrifted scarf.
I went for a print and texture mixed fall look with my thrifted circle motif scarf, thrifted plaid pants, and retail Oxfords (currently 98 wears and still going strong).”

“I love any kind of topper piece and scarves are my jam so I appreciated this month’s thrifty theme very much. I paired a preloved cape-like jacket (not a cape because it has sleeves) with an old thrifted scarf over a black secondhand dress for a rich color blocked budget friendly fall outfit.”

I hope you enjoyed this collection preloved shawls, capes, and scarves! Be sure to check back with us on December 16, 2024, for our next style challenge. Sally has chosen Wintergreen as our theme!

Keeping it on the edge,
