The Thrifty Six in Wintergreen

Welcome to the final edition of 2024 for The Thrifty Six! We are a group of international fashion lovers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we will all share an outfit based on a specific theme that features preloved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling preloved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here not only to inspire you to shop second hand but to also get creative in your closets.

Sally chose this month’s style prompt, Wintergreen, because it is “a color really runs the gamut of green tones so hopefully everyone has something to work with in their winter wardrobes”. Since green is my forever favorite color, I have lots of different shades of it in my closet that would suit this theme. My only difficulty was finding something in a shade of wintergreen that was preloved.

That is where this thrifted wintergreen tunic topper by Zara entered the game. I think the color would be more appropriately named mintergreen, but whatever you call it, the color works for this month’s thrifty style challenge. The topper has a brown chevron style pattern so I worked in different shades of green and brown to create a cohesive outfit that is not only wintergreen but also winter appropriate.

Whenever I create an outfit for a thrifty style challenge, I try to incorporate as many preloved or secondhand pieces as I can. Sometimes I am able to put together an entire outfit using all or almost all thrifted items. Sometimes I manage to only incorporate one or two preloved elements. But most of the time, my outfits end up being a fairly balanced mix of secondhand and newly purchased items.

For this outfit, I included four more preloved pieces in addition to my tunic topper. My brown cowgirl boots and brown silk floral neckerchief were thrift shop finds from years ago. My turquoise and brown beaded hoop earrings are a recent flea market purchase and my wintergreen statement necklace was picked up the Salvation Army thrift shop a few months ago.

The outfit elements that were purchased new include my teal tee shirt, my brown leggings, my minty green hat, and my Highlander plaid coat, which created the best pattern mix with my chevron shirt and floral neckerchief.

I ended up really liking this outfit a lot. The color palette and the pattern mix appeal to my style senses very much. My only complaint is that the chevron tunic was a little snug over top of the bulkier long sleeve tee shirt. However, I am excited to style this topper in warmer weather over something less bulky.

Are you a fan of wintergreen?

Now let’s see how my thrifty friends have styled wintergreen.

“For this month’s challenge I chose my second hand Marks and Spencer coat that I bought on eBay a few years ago. I’ve teamed it with black palazzo jeans (also M&S), a geometric print top from Warehouse and chunky Converse from Vinted.”

“The T6 theme for December is ‘Wintergreen’; a beautiful shade of green, somewhere between teal, peacock and pine…
…it’s a rich jewel colour with a distinct festive feel, perfect for a special Christmas Day outfit!
I found this vision in velvet at a Kilo Sale way back in January; it was love at first sight and I knew it would be my Christmas Day dress…
Soft velvet radiates light, gold trims bring opulence and the exquisite neck piece looks like it’s part of the dress…
I can’t wait to step out on Christmas morning – I hope the day is as bright and fresh as this dress!”

“I believe in the power of the color green and had the 3 of us from my crew show different concepts of how to wear it. I am using it as a pop of color in my monochromatic outfit.
Everything except my eyeglasses and lace Halftee (under the sweater) is thrifted or preloved.”

“Ain’t this a colourful outfit for me! I love the pink jacket with the red
boots. And although I am totally not a fan of red and green together, too
Christmassy, it works somehow in this look. And you all know how I love
black but I never wear these preloved trousers with black. Only with
red, pink or yellow. So you could say these are my out of the box
trousers. It even has some embroidery on the left pocket.”

“I love every shade of green in winter, but for a December outfit, I chose olive and sage greens with black and a pop of red. I can wear this thrifted black-and-olive leaf print dress in every season of the year, depending on how I layer it.  The thrifted scarf is an amazing woven pattern with red, bright pink, orange, black, dark blue, and green tones that blend together beautifully.”

“I found this wintergreen duster style top with brown squiggles on a summertime thrifting adventure. I never had the chance to wear it before the cold weather arrived, but I was able to style this lightweight top for winter with some creative layering. I added preloved boots, necklace, scarf, and earrings in various shades of brown and green to create a cool color combination that really stands out in the snow.”
