The Thrifty Six in Thrifted Faves
Technology was playing some silly games these past few weeks which resulted in missed communications all around me. It was kind of weird actually. When those sorts of things happen in abundance in a short period of time it usually means Mercury is in retrograde. But the last retrograde period ended on February 3 and Mercury doesn’t go retrograde again until May 10…just in time to really goof with summer planning.
In any event, established email contacts were going missing all over the place. I ended up finding a bunch in my spam folder which I still cannot understand. So if you have sent me an email and I never replied, it could be sitting in spam or it could be lost in some other mysterious place in virtual outer space.
Apparently, I was not the only one effected by the email gone wild. It was happening to Jane and Nancy as well. As a result, we ended up with some last minute pressure put on dear Jane to choose a theme and choose it fast so we all had time to work something out. Especially for Grace, who is currently studying abroad, and Lucy, who is at her house in Florida. Both are working with very limited wardrobes.
In a valiant burst of genius, Jane came up with the idea that we style our favorite thrifted things! Now that certainly makes it easier. Except for me. Because I have so darn many favorite thrifted things to choose from. And Lucy has found herself in a whirlwind of life happenings that have temporarily put her blog on hold. So she will be sitting out until things start to settle down.
I mentioned above that I have a lot of favorite thrifted things in my closet making it difficult to choose which favorite is my favorite favorite. So I chose Jeff’s favorite instead! Actually, this black Zara dress is his second favorite thrifted thing that I own. I had it confused with this little black thrifted dress that is actually his favorite favorite.
Then I added one of my favorite thrifted blazers. Not my favorite favorite thrifted blazer like this burgundy velvet one but it is by Zara and I had purchased it with this dress with the intention of wearing them together. I have worn the dress with my red cape and the blazer with a plaid skirt, but this is the first time I have put them together as I originally envisioned. Then I added my favorite thrifted combat boots which were featured in our very first Thrifty Six post, Kickin’ Off the Thrifty Six in PreLoved Shoes.
I also have a pretty fabulous collection of preloved handbags at my disposal. But let there be no confusion that this little cigar bag clutch is absolutely my favorite thrifted handbag and possibly my favorite thrifted item that I own. It is so fun and unique and it always makes me smile when I bring it out to play.
Finally, the colorful statement piece of this all black look is not thrifted, but gifted. This gorgeous turquoise beaded lariat necklace is one of the necklaces that Michelle gave to me at lunch in Asheville and it is perfect for this little black dress. I have a few pieces of turquoise colored jewelry and I find that I reach for them often so it is really nice to add some variety. I also really like the lariat style for breaking up long columns of solid color in an outfit. Thanks so much, Michelle, for my fabulous new jewelry! I can’t wait to share more of the pieces…especially my favorite turquoise key earrings.
Well that’s my look…mostly thrifted, partly gifted, but all totally me.
Now let’s check out my thrifty friends’ favorite things.
The Thrifty Six is a group of international fashion influencers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we will all share an outfit based on a theme that features preloved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling preloved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here to inspire you to shop second hand!

“I found this jumpsuit in a charity shop for £6…it still had the original tag on it! I had no idea what it would look like on but I knew I had to buy it anyway. When I got it home and tried it on, I was so glad I’d bought it! I’ve styled it with my favourite velvet cat bag that I bought on eBay years ago.”

“Since this month’s theme is favorites, I decided to round up some of my favorite thrifted outfits from the past! I’ve been really struggling to keep up with blogging these past few weeks while studying abroad, so I figured rounding up some of my best secondhand looks would be a fun way to fulfill this month’s Thrifty Six post. This brown tweed blazer fits me perfectly and is by far one of my favorite secondhand pieces. It always makes me feel like a badass—in the chicest, most professional way possible!”

“Favourite things…I’ve worn this dramatic micro-mini at several glamorous events and often been asked if it’s a designer piece. It’s actually one of my own very simple creations…A basic sequin dress, with masses of faux-jet beads added to adorn the bodice. The beads came in the form of a cheap necklace which I’ve stitched into each shoulder so it drapes across the front. The movement, theatre and animation elevates a basic LBD into something quite sensational…I have hundreds of dresses but I think this one is my absolute favourite!”

“My favorite outfit. Now that is a difficult one. I had to think about that one. Of course it has to be black, I thought…. Because I really have changed in the past years, and I do wear color now, black still is my favorite. There is something dramatic, cool, punky, sexy, mysterious about a black outfit. Well, in my eyes it is.You might think it’s very boring. And then I thought of the photo I use a lot. A simple black dress, biker boots with golden studs and some golden jewelry! And then it hit me!! It wasn’t pre loved!! And it’s all about pre loved with The Thrifty Six of course! So then I had to choose between a Diane von Fustenberg dressand this King Louie one. But as the DvF dress is more a winter dress I choose this one. I just love the fact that it is a wrap dress and the print is so lovely. Also the fabric feels great to my skin. I feel very feminine in this one!”
Nancy
And Me!
“Here are my favorite thrifted things all combined into one! Actually this Zara dress is one of my husband’s favorites. I had purchased the Zara velvet blazer on the same thrifting trip as the dress with every intention of wearing them together. So I finally did that! Also my favorite combat boots and cigar box purse were fabulous preloved purchases as well. And my new turquoise necklace was gifted to me from Michelle of My Bijou Life!”

Such a fun outfit! An edgy fusion of professional attire and attitude. It makes me think upscale dive bars. You know the ones – those with a quirky brand, some history, interesting clientele. But definitely one of a kind. And not just some seedy place where the likes of Aqualung gather.
The lariat necklace looks great with it! I am so glad these pieces are be appreciated and worn.

Michelle, thank you, thank you, thank you! I loved that description of upscale dive bars! Those are exactly the kind of places I frequented in the days when I frequented places like that! There are certain all black outfits, especially the ones with berets, that make me feel like I am channeling Audrey Hepburn from Funny Face. The dance scene in the bar is actually what comes to mind even though she is not wearing a dress or a beret. Haha.

I have to admit, I haven’t seen Funny Face! Yikes! I need to.

Well, you absolutely must watch it then, my friend! I am adding it to my watch list for this week! I haven’t seen it in years and I think it deserves a revisiting.

Thank you, thank you very much, Marsha! I actually wear black most of the time when I am just hanging around the house! In fact, I am sitting here in the same black leggings and black hoodie that I have been wearing since Saturday night. I love these lariat style necklaces for columns of color. Michelle actually gave me three of them! One is more white with turquoise and the other is black with white.

I’ve never been good at spotting wonderful finds in thrift stores. But, you’ve inspired me to try a little harder and to think creatively. Thank you for participating in Talent-Sharing Tuesdays Link-Up 12.

Carol, thank you so much! I really appreciate that. I have been an avid thrift shopper since I was about 14 years old so I have decades of experience at it. But I also do end up with some junk in my possession that probably should have been left in the thrift store! You really have to be in the mood for the hunt though when you go. If I am not in the mood, everything just looks like junk to me.
