The Thrifty Six in Preloved Silk

The Thrifty Six in Preloved Silk, Shelbee on the Edge

Welcome to The Thrifty Six. We are a group of international fashion influencers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we will all share an outfit based on a theme that features preloved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling preloved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here to inspire you to shop second hand!

Before I get into our silky theme, I have a farewell and an introduction.

Due to her abundant life as a 20-something, Grace has left The Thrifty Six after nearly four years of sharing her frugal fashion finds from all around the world. It has been such a pleasure getting to know Grace and I have thoroughly enjoyed her creative styles and enthusiastic approach to life. She will continue blogging so be sure to follow her at Graceful Rags. Love you, Grace!

And with that farewell, I want to welcome Sally of Within a World of My Own to The Thrifty Six! Sally is an avid thrifter and frequently participates in style challenges (including Style Imitating Art) so I think she is a perfect fit for this group. I am really excited to have you on board and see your thrifty styles, Sally!

And now onto our clothing and the thrifty challenge presented by Jane. In her exact words, “The theme for May is very simple, it’s just ‘Silk’.” Ha. Very simple, she said! This may have been the most challengey of all the thrifty challenges for me. So what did I do?

First I scoured my closet for something silk. Not silky, but actual fabric made from silk. I didn’t find much. Just a few scarves. One of them was thrifted, I think. I don’t like to run out and purchase something just for playing dress up and taking some photos so I was going to work with my one (probably) thrifted scarf.

But I had to go to the thrift shop for a few white tee shirts to finish a rag curtain for my sister. While I was there, I figured I would browse through quickly and see if I could find something silk. Drawing inspiration from Salazar, I decided to look for a men’s necktie in silk. I found a really cool purple and green striped silk tie but it was $6.99 and I wasn’t willing to pay that for something I will only wear once in a great while. So I kept digging until I found this white silk tie for $1.00. I grabbed it and figured I would find something at home to style with it.

As I was heading to the checkout with my white tee shirts and white tie, I spotted this white satin slip skirt on the rail. It was my size and something that I will wear again so I bought it as well for $6.99. It is 100% polyester but it has a silky shine and feel so it worked well enough to style for this theme.

To coordinate with the black peacock print on the skirt, I wore a sheer black Swiss dot blouse with my black cowgirl boots and a black straw hat. I topped it off with a preloved white cotton blazer, pearly earrings, and a shiny crystal floral brooch.

As much as I have been embracing all of the bright colors lately, I really liked this black and white outfit. After taking these photos, I ended up creating another outfit featuring my new thrifted skirt for today’s Style Imitating Art challenge. Check it out later today!

“I bought this Jaeger silk top on eBay years ago and used to wear it a lot for work, but I haven’t worn it for ages. When I put it on for this month’s theme, I wondered why I stopped wearing it because it feels so nice on – it’s airy and as light as a feather…perfect for a perimenopausal woman in summer! I’ve paired it with some old culottes from Asos and a quilted bag from Zara.”

“One of my friends recently gave me a bunch of clothes to give to good homes, and I decided to keep this silk blouse even though it’s larger than my normal size. I’m in love with the color of it and tying it at the waist creates a perfect proportion. I held the ends together with a scarf clip and decorated the middle with a clip-on earring. The base layer is this mustard-colored dress from Your Revolving Closet which is a sustainable/thrifty way to have new clothes at your fingertips.”

“I am wearing a lipstick print blouse! Fits with your blazer Emma! This blouse is from the brand I used to work for and bought on Vinted. I love the contrasts of the tie with the silk blouse and the soft fabric with the leather skirt. I don’t think I ever wore the blouse with jeans, I think that would look great too. Silk works best, for me, worn with a thicker fabric. I picked the skirt back from the giveaway pile. Could not let it go, I should wear it more often.”

“My favorite silk items to thrift are scarves: they are timeless, one-size-fits-all, and usually in very good condition. This Art Deco silk scarf was a nice pairing with another thrifted silk piece, the Talbots gold-camel lined silk skirt. For my first foray with the Thrifty Six, I wore an outfit with all secondhand items, including hand-me-down pearl stud earrings from my mom that are several decades old.”

“I didn’t have much in preloved sillk except for a scarf or two. So I went on a quick thrifting adventure and found this 100% silk tie for $1.00. I was going to just buy the tie and find something in my closet to wear with it but I spotted this satin slip skirt on my way to the register and it really caught my attention. I saw it was my size, so I grabbed it on a whim, paid $6.00 for it, and have already styled two outfits around it. Although it is not silk (it is a polyester satin), it has a silky feel and I really loved it with the necktie. I added a preloved white cotton blazer because it is still a bit chilly here. Our spring weather tends to arrive with the summer solstice!”

Be sure to check back on June 17, 2024, for our next challenge. Sally has chosen Summer Layers as the theme. I am not so intimidated by this one because layers are my game and summer is almost here!

Keeping it on the edge,
