The Thrifty Six are Wearing Summer Colors in Winter
Since this is Jodie’s inaugural post as a member of The Thrifty Six, she had the honor of choosing this month’s thrifty theme. All six of us reside in the northern hemisphere where we still have one-third of the winter season to go with 8 weeks behind us and 4 weeks until the spring equinox. Where I live in the very northern reaches of New York State, the spring equinox is much less spring-like and very much mud-like. Most things don’t start to bloom around here until mid to late May and real spring weather usually arrives just in time for the summer solstice. Generally in my part of the world, we are blanketed in white from November through March. April and May can most accurately be called mud season when everything is smeared with brown and black crud. And by the end of June, the grass starts regaining its lush green hue and then we get to enjoy some of the more beautiful colors of nature until snow season rolls back around in the fall.
So when Jodie decided we would style summer colors in winter, I was happy to oblige! The cruddy winter background here is starting to wear on my nerves and depress my soul and a little color injection always seems to work in lifting one’s spirits and cheering one’s mood.
Now the tricky part of The Thrifty Six challenges is that you have to incorporate thrifted, secondhand, or preloved items into your look. This group aims to showcase ways in which you can get creative with your personal style by shopping secondhand. Not only is thrifting a more sustainable way to shop, it also is easier on your budget and you can find really unique one of a kind pieces hidden in thrift shop racks.
So let’s talk about my outfit.
Summer colors brings to mind bright, bold saturated hues as well as soft, delicate pastel shades. I always think of white as the best summer neutral although I tend to favor black in almost all of my outfits any time of year. I have a really pretty thrifted black floral tulle skirt (actually I think it might be a dress) that I had styled with this magenta sweater for this challenge, but I was not happy that my preloved item was black so I started over with this white Zara maxi dress.
I layered an old bright orange long sleeve tee underneath for extra warmth and then added this fun thrifted Zara kimono shirt in bright oranges, yellows, pinks, and reds. The two main components of this outfit, my dress and kimono top, are the only preloved items that I am wearing, but everything else was shopped from my closet. I am not really into shopping anywhere else these days.
In contrast to my bright colors, I decided to accessorize with pastel pink in my shoes, my hat, my gloves, and my furry coat. I also worked in some bits of magenta in my tights and earrings, since it’s the hottest color around right now. And this fabulous orange scarf needs a little spotlight as well. I bought this thing over 20 years ago from a street vendor in New York City for just a few dollars. I loved it so much, I also bought it in turquoise. I forgot I had them until I recently rediscovered them during my last closet clean out and I think I shall be wearing them with much more frequency now!
My kids absolutely love my pink furry coat which I purchased at Target a few years ago. They thought I had bought myself an anime costume because it resembles the cape of Donquixote Doflamingo from One Piece (Ralph’s favorite anime show). And it really does. So now their friends think I am a really cool mom because I wear an anime cape!
And that’s how I wear summer colors during the cold season. I don’t think I would have ever thought to pair brights and pastels in this manner if not for this challenge. As it turns out, I really liked this whimsical outfit for brightening the winter gloom. Now let’s check out my thrifty friends and see how they all brought some summer into the middle of their winters!
The Thrifty Six is a group of international fashion influencers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we will all share an outfit based on a theme that features preloved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling preloved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here to inspire you to shop second hand!

I agree with you about white for summer. I love the top you paired with the white dress. All of those bright cheerful colors definitely make me think summer. The scarf is divine! I had to giggle about your boys thinking you’d bought yourself a costume when you got your furry coat. LOL!
