The Thrifty Six are Sparkling in Sequins and Such
The Thrifty Six are back for our third month of sharing our fabulous preloved fashions with you all. We are a group of six international fashion and lifestyle bloggers and influencers coming to you from all over the world. We span at least three different decades of life and we each have our own unique and individual style with a shared passion for preloved clothing and second hand shopping. Our goal is to share a variety of ways to be stylish while doing a little something good for the environment.
With the fashion and textile industry being a major contributor to landfills and other environmental pollution, we decided to make it the mission of this little group to focus on second hand items. Every month we will choose a theme and share our styles with you to hopefully inspire you to shop more second hand and less fast fashion.
This month’s thrifty theme was chosen by Jane of Preloved-Vintage-Handmade. With the holidays upon us, it is time to start planning your festive outfits even if celebrations will be kept to a minimum. So why not consider some sparkle to brighten up a rather strange holiday season. And remember you can find some of the prettiest sparkly things in second hand shops. So not only will you look fabulous, but you will feel fabulous for also doing something beneficial for our environment.
When Jane announced the sparkle theme for this month, I knew that I wanted to add as many sparkly things into one outfit as I could. But I wanted to do it in a way that wasn’t completely over the top obnoxious. I wanted a wearable everyday outfit that has a little extra shine.
Since we are not planning much by way of holiday celebrations this year, I shifted my focus from a party outfit to an “every day should be a party” outfit. Because God knows I could use any little thing to cheer my mood these days. And it’s kind of hard not to smile when I’ve got sparkles from my earlobes straight down to my toes.
I also had the goal in mind to incorporate as many preloved pieces into one outfit. I discovered this cute sequined chambray jacket, the Italian landmark tee with tiny little crystal details, and the rhinestone embellished mini skirt on the same thrifting trip. My floral beaded bag was also a thrift shop find from a few months back. Everything else was shopped directly from my closet.
As Kate Spade once said,
“She leaves a little sparkle wherever she goes.”
Speaking of Kate Spade, I wrote a tribute post to her back when we first heard the news of her tragic death. That post, Beautiful Train Wrecks, speaks about the very really threat of suicide in individuals who struggle with mental health issues. As you know, I have struggled my entire life with Bipolar Disorder and the current state of the world has pulled me back into some very dark places. I just reread that post from two years ago and it helped shift my perspective a tiny bit. So if you need also need to refresh perspective, do go have a read.
I also want to take a moment to thank my amazing blogger friends for all of the support and encouragement that you have offered me through the years, but most especially right now. The struggle is real, for sure, but I am surrounded by so much love that eventually I will climb out of this abyss.
One way I have found that really boosts my mood is getting dressed up so I feel good. And seriously, sparkles have this strange effect on mood. If you see something all shiny and sparkly and pretty, it has an immediate effect on the brain. Plus if the sparkle in your eyes has been lost, the reflection from your clothing will bring it right back!
“Every woman in this world wears a little sparkle, some in their dress, and some in their eyes.”
Shahla Khan
And now let’s get to my sparkly thrifty friends and their gorgeous styles!
The Thrifty Six is a group of international fashion influencers who meet once a month in our little space on the internet to share our thrifty outfits. On the third Monday of every month, we will all share an outfit based on a theme that features preloved wardrobe pieces. Shopping and reselling preloved clothing is so much better for the environment and you can find some of the best fashions in thrift or charity shops. The Thrifty Six are here to inspire you to shop second hand!

Emma of Style Splash
“When I found out the theme for this month’s Thrifty Six collab was sparkle I knew I had to wear this dress. It is the perfect antidote to the long, dark evenings and depressing news we’re bombarded with daily. When I bought it on eBay I had absolutely no idea when or where I would get to wear it, but I’m not always a practical shopper. Sometimes it’s good to let the heart rule the head!”

“I instantly knew I wanted to style this sparkly rust-colored sweater for this month’s collab! Unfortunately, it was raining and very cold on photoshoot day, so I had to adjust my outfit to add a lil’ extra warmth. You can’t really tell in these pics, but I swear the sweater is sparkly! It has the prettiest gold threads throughout—a perfect outfit for Thanksgiving.”

Jane of Preloved-Vintage-Handmade
“Sparkles in the darkness…I wanted to truly capture the warm iridescent glow of this rose gold sequin dress. It comes to life when darkness falls! A dress for underground nightclubs, louche parties and minor festive misdemeanours…I stood in blackness throwing my body into sculptural shapes to twist and contort the glistening sequins. I let the flash of the camera work its magic to reveal the resplendent lustre for all to see…”
Jane
“When life gives you Monday, dip it in glitter and sparkle all day.”

Lucy of Confessions of a Montreal Styling Diva
“So, I have this darling, colorful Dimora dress that I absolutely love, but on its own…it truly makes me look drabby and matronly. But the colours are just too good and I really wanna wear it! So, here comes a bustier to change it all up while adding a good dose of pizzazz! I jumped for joy when I thrifted this one a few years back. I collect great accessories,so I was thrilled with this sequin darling. I do classify bustiers as accessories, as I rarely, if ever wear, them on their own. They are just the right thing to enhance any outfit. Take a look at how I styled up this one and tell me this outfit doesn’t make for great conversation?”
Lucy
“Another day, another chance to sparkle.”

Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style
“When Jane gave us the theme Sparkle, I immediately thought of my new glitter sweater! Wait….new???? We are The Thrifty Six! Oops. I almost started to shop for a pre loved sparkly item and then the light bulb started to glow! Yes, my, new to me, pre loved metallic silver looking skirt! I love this skirt. It’s so stretchy and easy to wear and yet so cool! Hurray for sparkles!”
Nancy
“Don’t let anyone or anything to dull your sparkle.”

And me!
“When Jane chose sparkles as the theme this month, I used it as an opportunity to use my limited time 50% off coupon at my local Thrifty Shopper. That is where I found most of this outfit! The sequined chambray jacket might be my favorite thrifted item ever. I love the style, the color, and the fun sparkles! The little black skirt and my graphic tee shirt are both bedazzled with lots of rhinestone sparkles as well. The jacket and tee shirt were both marked $4.99 and the skirt was marked $5.99. With my coupon, I paid $8 for all three pieces! My beaded bag was also a thrift shop find from Salvation Army and I paid $3 for it. Since we were going sparkly, I had to wear sparkle footwear as well. These gray shimmery booties are from Torrid a few years ago. And my Happiness Boutique Necklace and Earrings were the perfect accessories to showcase an outfit that’s all about the sparkle!”

I love each of the parts of this outfit! The skirt is so fun and flirty and after my last thrifting trip (I think the first all year), I want to go back and see what else I can find. I love discovering the unexpected!

Mireille, thanks so much! I am having so much fun with this group and it is actually keeping me from shopping new retail stuff! I just got a 50% off coupon again from my local Thrifty Shopper but it is only good for this week and I do need to focus on Christmas shopping and not myself! Haha. Happy Monday!

Looking very sparkling there (I know bad line) but I like the look. Holy cow, I am actually sounding like a fashion reviewer. LOL. See, how much you taught me.

Haha, thanks so much, Patrick! I have to find some way to shine during these rather dull and frustrating times!

Cute! I don’t do sparkly very often (for my clothes–I’m pretty sure my eyes sparkle with mischief often enough 😉 ).
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Thanks, Anita! Sparkling mischief in one’s eyes might be my very favorite accessory! I have a tendency to wear that kind of sparkle fairly frequently as well!

Now that’s a bargain outfit! I love sparkles more now then I ever did. You ladies make me have to buy more sparkles! I hope you will sparkle from the inside soon as much as you do on the outside my dear friend.

Aw, Nancy, thanks so much, my sweet friend! This was such a fun theme! I am loving all the sparkles on all of you! I can’t wait to find out the theme for December. I don’t know whose turn it is to pick!

Such a pretty look, Shelbee. You did a great job, taking all the sparky pieces and putting them together in an outfit that you can wear every day and not just to a glamorous party.
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Anna, thanks so much! I definitely was looking for more casual pieces with sparkle to make it an everyday look. Because sparkles are good for us and not only for dress up!

That is a completely adorable sparkly outfit! So cute. And it’s amazing it was scored mostly in one thrifting trip!
While I do have anxiety issues for the most part my mood is pretty stable at mostly content to just plain happy, but between the raging pandemic, and Trump playing with our national security by denying Biden access, I am having trouble. So I can certainly see why you are being so adversely affected. We just need to hang in there for awhile longer.
Hugs my friend!

Michelle, thanks so much for always encouraging and supporting me! I had a few good months in the midst of this pandemic where my mood was stable and happy and then all of the sudden a huge mood swing comes out of nowhere and completely slams me to the ground. I was in a really great place mentally at the very beginning of all this and my decline has been noticeable. It mostly makes me worry for others who were not in as good of a place mentally and emotionally when this all began. If I declined so drastically with years of proven coping mechanisms at my disposal, what in the world are the others doing…the ones who have not progressed as far on their mental health journey? We do need to hang in because we have no choice! And we definitely need to continue supporting one another through this mess. I can’t even read or watch the news at all anymore. It just confuses the hell out of me. I have no idea who or what to believe anymore! I have indeed become quite cynical! Hugs back to you, my friend!

Love all your different hints of sparkle. You dazzle in these gloomy times! The necklace is stunning, really lights up your smile

Barbara Chapman
Shelbee, I LOVE your sparkly new-2-u jacket and I already love the bright top underneath ~ it’s the same one you wore for Halloween, isn’t it? I like it tucked into the skirt! Fun outfit and I’m sorry I forgot to add your post to this past week’s Share Your Style!! I meant to go back and add it, but forgot. (Hubby was ready for me as we were going out to dinner; order at drive-thru, eat in car. Our new way to “go out.”)
I hear you with the depression. I’ve never been diagnosed but I know I get seasonally depressed without enough sunlight and situational.
Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!
Hugs,
Barb 🙂
shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com
Barb, thank you so much! This was a super fun outfit to create. And it is a different shirt from my Halloween one. This one has an Italian landscape. I love your new way of going out! The only time we go out is to take photos in the park. Haha. I am starting to connect my depression with my cycle which is making it appear to be PMDD. Now I can start figuring out how to deal with it. We did have a wonderful holiday. I hope yours was filled with blessings!
